23-33: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value
_validate_iso_timestampleaves a timezone mismatch in the validation. The validator accepts date-only and naive date-time strings, because
datetime.fromisoformataccepts both. The service passes the raw string to an OpenSearch range query. A naive string is interpreted by OpenSearch as UTC, which can differ from the client's intent. The current frontend always sendstoISOString()values with aZsuffix, so this path is safe for the shipped UI. Direct API callers can still send naive values. Optional: reject naive values by checkingparsed.tzinfo is None. The earlier review comment about missing validation is resolved by this change.

@mfortman11 @Wallgau not too sure if this could be a problem, but since currently sorting by Date Uploaded groups by (indexed_time, filename), is it possible files before this PR that were potentially indexed in multiple batches can show up as duplicate rows and skew the count. New uploads share one timestamp and aren't affected though. thoughts on what to potentially do? |

There was a problem hiding this comment.
The date range is appended to filter_clauses, and the hybrid query only hangs that list on the outer bool filter. The kNN clause at line 622 still requests the global top 50. JVector disk_ann accepts a filter inside the knn clause and applies it while choosing those neighbors. A range on the outer bool is a post-filter, so a narrow date range can drop in-range semantic matches that were not in that top 50.
Keep the outer bool filter so the keyword clauses stay inside the range. Also pass filter_clauses into each kNN clause, change line 622:
knn_clause: dict[str, Any] = { "vector": embedding_vector, "k": 50, "num_candidates": 1000, } if filter_clauses: knn_clause["filter"] = {"bool": {"filter": filter_clauses}} knn_queries.append({"knn": {field_name: knn_clause}})
The same date clause at line 405 is only used to discover embedding spaces. It does not need to move.

[medium] Include the full final millisecond of a selected day
When a document is indexed between 23:59:59.999001 and 23:59:59.999999 local time, the inclusive created_before bound produced here ends at .999000 and excludes it, even though the UI displays its upload date as the selected day. DocumentIndexWriter stores timestamps with microsecond precision. Use an exclusive next-day bound, or otherwise include all microseconds in the selected day.

[P2] Reject non-string date bounds supplied through filters
Take a /search body such as {"query":"*","filters":{"created_after":123}}. The new validation skips the non-string value, but SearchService still passes it on as an indexed_time range bound. The request can then apply an unintended numeric date, or fail in OpenSearch instead of returning the intended 422. Check the type of any bounds taken from filters before passing them to the service.
