feat: add retrieval evaluation harness (#2478) - #2498
Conversation
Stdlib-only modules under scripts/eval/retrieval: dataset validation, file-level recall@k / MRR / nDCG@k, results files and the per-question baseline diff. Covered by tests/unit/test_retrieval_eval.py, which needs neither the SDK nor a running stack.
21 original Markdown documents for a fictional product and 83 hand-labeled questions tagged semantic, keyword, exact-token and multi-doc.
run ingests the corpus under run-unique filenames, sends every question through /v1/search scoped to those files, scores and reports the run, and deletes what it uploaded. compare diffs two results files offline.
… CI (#2478) Adds scripts/eval/** to the backend test and lint workflow path filters so a change to the harness alone still runs its unit tests, Ruff and mypy.

WalkthroughThis pull request adds a retrieval evaluation harness with a documentation corpus and 83 labeled questions. It validates datasets, scores search results, runs evaluations against a stack, and writes reports that compare results with an earlier run. Backend workflows now include evaluation-directory changes. ChangesRetrieval evaluation harness

Reverts 76b8b0e. The space changed the corpus hash, so comparisons against earlier results warned that the corpus differed.
eval-validate, eval-run, eval-baseline and eval-compare wrap the uv commands in scripts/eval/retrieval. BASELINE, CURRENT and EVAL_ARGS pass files and options through.

dependency” claim in FRAMEWORK_COMPARISON.md to apply only to offline scoring,
reporting, and comparison paths. Explicitly distinguish these from run_eval.py
run, which uploads documents and queries the live /v1/search stack and therefore
requires network access to OpenRAG.

eval-baseline always copied from the hardcoded results/results.json, so an --output-dir override passed via EVAL_ARGS would silently copy stale or missing data as the baseline. Add an OUTPUT_DIR make variable that eval-run, eval-baseline and eval-compare all use consistently instead. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Medium — Reject comparisons with no shared primary cutoff
In scripts/eval/retrieval/report.py:161-169, comparing --k 2,4 with a baseline using 1,3,5,10 silently drops recall and nDCG because the current primary cutoff is absent from the baseline. If reciprocal rank is unchanged, a real recall regression is classified as unchanged. Please reject comparisons without a shared cutoff, or choose a cutoff available in both runs.

Medium — Validate the fetch limit against requested cutoffs
In scripts/eval/retrieval/run_eval.py:75-80, --fetch-limit can be zero, negative, or smaller than the largest requested --k. The harness can then report recall@k and nDCG@k without retrieving enough chunks to evaluate that cutoff. Please require a positive fetch limit at least as large as the largest requested cutoff before ingestion starts

Low — Preserve brackets in saved IPv6 target URLs
redact_url() removes the brackets from IPv6 hosts, so http://[::1]:3000 is recorded as the invalid URL http://::1:3000. The evaluation request uses the original URL, so scores are unaffected, but the printed target and saved results are incorrect. Please restore brackets when rebuilding an IPv6 URL.

Fixed in 8fb18b0: redact_url() now puts the brackets back on IPv6 hosts, so http://[::1]:3000 is recorded as-is. Added [::1] and a credentialed [2001:db8::1] case to the existing test.
Summary
Adds the phase 1 retrieval evaluation harness from #2478: a fixed document set, labeled questions, and a script that measures how well
/v1/searchfinds the right documents. It lets us compare search quality before and after a change to search, chunking or embeddings, and see which questions got better or worse. No backend or search code is changed. Everything lives in
scripts/eval/retrieval/and uses only the public API through the Python SDK.What is included

/v1/search, limited to the files that run uploaded.results.jsonandsummary.md, and deletes the files it uploaded.Documents already in the stack are never returned, changed or deleted.
Results on a live stack
Local stack, watsonx embeddings (
ibm/granite-embedding-278m-multilingual), chunk size 1000, overlap 200.The chunk-size comparison listed 19 regressed and 12 improved questions and warned that the chunk settings differed between the two runs.
Findings worth knowing
duplicate_contentbut still counted insuccessful_files. The harness therefore marks each upload with its run ID and checks per-file status. Not in this PR
Per the issue, these are out of scope for phase 1: a CI gate on scores, a committed baseline, PDF documents, and judging chat answer quality.
