fix: stop Google sign-in hanging on /auth/callback in dev - #2538
mfortman11 wants to merge 9 commits into
Conversation
React StrictMode's dev remount unsubscribed the useMutation observer, which detaches it from the in-flight mutation. The remounted effect then hit the sessionStorage dedupe guard and returned, so the exchange succeeded on the backend but the page never saw the result: it stayed on "Signing you in..." with no redirect. Dedupe on the exchange promise (keyed by code) instead, so a re-run of the effect waits on the request already in flight, and keep status in component state. A reload of an already-used callback URL now shows an error instead of spinning with no request in flight.

Callback validation and setup frontend/app/auth/callback/page.tsx, frontend/app/auth/callback/page.test.tsx |
The page stores exchange promises by code, captures the redirect destination, and checks for previously processed codes. Tests set up callback URLs, count requests, and check the already-used-code response. |
Exchange lifecycle and outcomes frontend/app/auth/callback/page.tsx, frontend/app/auth/callback/page.test.tsx |
The page sends or reuses exchanges, invalidates connector queries when requests settle, and handles success, failure, and cleanup. Tests cover StrictMode, remounting, redirects, and exchange failures. |

This promise doesnt have a clean up after a completion, risks rerunning same o-auth exchange in strict mode

maybe a finally block for cleanup after 'exchanges' is done

Keeping the entry after it settles is deliberate. It's what stops a re-run from POSTing the same code twice. A StrictMode re-run, a remount or a dependency change all find the stored promise and reuse its result.
If we deleted it in finally, a later effect run would find no entry and POST the spent code again. Google rejects that, so the page would flip from success to error. A remount would instead show "already used". I added a test (reuses a settled exchange when the page remounts with the same code) that fails with the delete and passes without it.
The cost is one settled promise per sign-in per page load. I added a short comment on exchanges saying this.

NIT: condition here could be more explicit: this part isu sed for reloading/back button edge case right?
something like : "if exchanging, wait; else if code was previously processed, show used error" for more visibility? I think this is good as is logically

Yes, this is the reload / back-button case: an earlier load already spent the code, and this page load has nothing in flight for it. Whether an exchange is in flight is the !exchanges.has(code) check, and in that case the effect waits on it. I left the logic as is and reworded the comment so it names the case.

exchanges.delete(code) could be added here from earlier comment if im understanding this right

Same as the line 40 thread: I'd rather keep the entry. Deleting it there is what would make the same OAuth exchange run again. It's covered by the new remount test.
Read auth_redirect_to once on mount: cleanupOAuthStorage() clears it, so a re-run of the effect after cleanup fell back to /chat. Add tests for the stored redirect target and for a remount reusing a settled exchange, and trim comments.

Clean up the exchanges entry and sessionStorage key in the request's own rejection path, so a failure that lands after the page unmounts isn't later reported as an already-used code.

Problem
In
next dev, signing in with Google gets back to/auth/callbackand stays on "Signing you in..." indefinitely: no redirect and no error. The backend has already exchanged the code and set the session cookie, so navigating to/chatby hand works. That is why the bug looks intermittent.Root cause
The App Router enables React StrictMode in dev, so effects mount, unmount and remount. Since #2052 the page has run the code exchange through
useMutationwith per-call callbacks:callback_processed_${code}in sessionStorage and callsmutate().useSyncExternalStoresubscription drops.MutationObserver.onUnsubscribe()then removes the observer from the in-flight mutation, and nothing reattaches it on resubscribe.pendingandonSuccess(refreshAuth+ redirect) never runs.Production builds don't double-invoke effects, but reloading the callback URL left the page in the same state: the key is set, nothing is in flight, and idle renders as "processing".
Fix
code, so a re-run of the effect waits on the request already in flight. Status lives in component state. Anactiveflag makes sure only the latest effect run sets state or redirects.Tests
New
frontend/app/auth/callback/page.test.tsx:/chat, and sends exactly onePOST /auth/callback. This test fails onmain.main.The StrictMode test uses RTL's
reactStrictMode: true. A<StrictMode>nested inside therenderWithProviderswrapper does not double-invoke effects, so it doesn't reproduce the bug.Full frontend suite passes, and biome and tsc are clean.
