CookSim — the physics of cooking

CookSim start page: pick one of six foods Boiled egg simulator: a jammy egg in 3D with the results and temperatures

A desktop app that simulates cooking with physics: choose the food, the method and the settings, and see what happens inside — temperatures, how far it has cooked, texture, colour — with a 3D view of the result.

Version 1.0 — Boiled egg, fries, cupcake (with milk, sugar and butter, and a cracking top), pizza, toast bread and baguette.

Demo

A 52-second tour of the app: CookSim-demo.mp4

Download

CookSim.exe — Windows 10 / 11, 64-bit. One file, no installation, works offline.

  1. Download CookSim.exe from the Releases page.
  2. Double-click it.
  3. The app is not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may show "Windows protected your PC". Click More info → Run anyway.

Requirement: the Microsoft Edge WebView2 runtime. It is part of Windows 11 and is installed with Microsoft Edge on Windows 10. If the window stays empty, install the "Evergreen Bootstrapper" from Microsoft's WebView2 page.

Boiled egg

  • Egg size, fridge-cold or room temperature.
  • Methods: into boiling water, cold start, water bath (sous-vide style), periodic cooking (boiling / 30 °C water).
  • Afterwards: ice bath, cold tap or straight to the plate; altitude.
  • Results: how far the white and the yolk have set, the yolk centre temperature, carry-over cooking after leaving the water, pasteurisation of the yolk, grey-green ring, a rough shell crack risk, and a cut egg in 3D (real look, setting map, peak temperature).

Fries

  • Frozen (pre-fried) or fresh-cut potatoes; cut size, potato sugar level and pre-treatment (soaked, blanched, citric acid).
  • Deep fryer, air fryer or fan oven; temperature, time and batch size (the oil cools when the batch goes in).
  • Results: colour of faces and tips, crust and crispness, how far the inside has cooked, oil content, acrylamide level (as a range), vitamin C, and a cut fry in 3D (water left, highest temperature reached).

Cupcake

  • Batch size (amount of flour), baking powder (from none to double the recipe), milk, sugar and butter, batter per cup, oven temperature and baking time; the amounts are shown in grams for your batch.
  • Results: how high the cupcake rises and whether the top domes or the centre sinks, whether the top cracks, crumb (gas share, firmness), crust colour, moisture lost, whether the centre has set, and a cut cupcake in 3D.

Pizza

  • Wood-fired (Neapolitan) or electric pizza oven; dome and floor temperature, baking time, dough ball weight, diameter and hydration; toppings from a plain base to margherita.
  • Results: how high the rim rises, rim and bottom colour, leopard spotting (wood oven), whether the rim and base are baked through, temperature of the sauce and cheese, and the water lost; a 3D pizza with a cut-open view.

Toast bread

  • A pan loaf from your own recipe: flour, eggs, sugar, salt, water, yeast; oven mode (top + bottom, fan, top heat, bottom heat, stone deck), temperature, time, with or without preheating.
  • Results: crust colour on the top and sides, whether the centre is baked through, height and over-proofing, sweetness, saltiness, softness, weight loss, and a 3D loaf and slice.

Baguette

  • Dough hydration, thickness, oven mode, temperature, time, steam and cold or preheated start.
  • Results: crust colour and thickness, centre temperature and starch, weight loss, crispness, and when the crust turns golden; a 3D baguette and cut view.

Good to know

Results are simulations, checked against published measurements, but not food-safety advice. Colours of the cut egg are illustrative.
