Motivation
The dead-code sweep of #12751 ran a one-off
knip --include-entry-exports, and an agent then proposed removing public API:listStorageKeys(#12763) andaddSuffix(#12765). Both PRs were closed. The exports of package entry points are public API, even when the monorepo doesn't use them and even when undocumented. Third-party sites, plugins and themes use them. The CI check
pnpm lint:knipnever reports these exports. The problem was the manual run plus the agent's judgment, so this PR fixes both:AGENTS.md: a short rule next to the Knip commands. Never remove public entry point exports as dead code. Report them, and only remove one when a maintainer decides to, as a breaking change./internalentry points have no stability guarantee, but removing their exports is still a breaking change PR.pnpm lint:knip:public-api: warns about the public API exports that the monorepo doesn't use, and always exits 0. Whenknip.config.tssees--include-entry-exports, it switchesexports/typesto thewarnseverity and ignores the entry points that are public by design. A manualknip --include-entry-exportsgets the same treatment. It isn't part of
pnpm lintor CI. Nobody reads warnings in CI logs, so maintainers should run it on demand.Answers
index.tsAPIs, or other public entry point APIs? With theAGENTS.mdrule. On the tooling side, the failing checks already ignore entry point exports, and the only Knip run that reports them now prints warnings.includeEntryExports(a CLI flag, or a root or per-workspace option) opts in.rulesseverities set towarndon't fail the run, andignoreIssuesmaps file globs to ignored issue types. Knip passes the parsed CLI args to the config function, so the config can apply all this only to the--include-entry-exportsrun. Knip has no way to ignore an export by name. It also can't tellpackage.jsonentry points apart from the entries declared in the config. JSDoc@publictags hide an export, but they would mean annotating hundreds of exports.pnpm lint:knip:public-apiprints 115 warnings (63 exports, 52 types). The raw--include-entry-exportsoutput has ~610 issues. Excluded as public by design:src/theme/**), resolved through@theme/*aliases or swizzled.src/index.ts), which Docusaurus loads by name from the site config. Their types are still reported.@docusaurus/types: Knip doesn't link the imports of@docusaurus/typesto that package. What remains
About 107 warnings are real public exports that the monorepo doesn't use. Some appear twice, once for the entry point's re-export and once for the original declaration:
