Product placement within retail stores is not merely about organizing shelves; it significantly influences customer behavior. Products positioned at strategic locations such as aisle ends or near store entrances attract greater attention, increase foot traffic, and often result in higher sales.
This project analyzes how product placement, pricing strategies, promotional activities, and customer demographics influence sales performance. Using Tableau, raw data is transformed into meaningful visual insights that help retailers understand optimal store layout strategies for improving sales outcomes.
Retailers frequently struggle to determine the optimal placement for products within their stores. Poor placement can cause products to be overlooked by customers, whereas effective placement can significantly increase sales.
The primary objectives of this project are:
- Analyze the impact of product placement on sales volume
- Examine how pricing, including competitor pricing, influences sales
- Study how customer demographics affect purchasing behavior
- Evaluate the effect of promotions and seasonal trends on sales
- Develop an interactive dashboard and story visualization for effective data exploration
The dataset used in this project was obtained from Kaggle titled:
“Impact of Product Positioning on Sales.”
Key variables included in the dataset are:
- Product category
- Product price
- Sales volume
- Competitor pricing
- Customer demographics
- Store location
- Promotional activities
Before creating visualizations, the dataset was prepared and cleaned to ensure accuracy and usability.
Steps performed:
- Verified and corrected data types in Tableau to avoid processing errors
- Ensured numeric fields such as price and sales were recognized as measures
- Created calculated fields including:
- Average Price
- Competitor Price
- Sales Volume
These calculated metrics enabled meaningful comparisons across different product categories.
The Clothing category shows the highest average sales volume, outperforming both electronics and food categories.
Product prices are slightly higher than competitor prices, indicating a pricing strategy aimed at differentiating offerings.
College students and families contribute the largest share of sales.
Food products tend to have slightly higher average prices compared to other categories.
Areas with higher foot traffic consistently generate higher sales volumes.
Seasonal fluctuations influence sales, although a stable baseline of non-seasonal demand exists.
Products placed in front-of-store locations attract more attention and achieve higher average sales.
Promotional campaigns significantly increase sales volume.
An interactive Product Placement Analysis Dashboard was created in Tableau.
The dashboard allows users to filter and analyze data based on:
- Product category
- Store position
- Customer demographics
This interactivity enables deeper exploration of sales patterns and placement strategies.
A Tableau Story was developed to present the findings sequentially.
It guides viewers through the analytical process, beginning with category-level comparisons and progressing to detailed insights on placement strategies and their impact on sales.
- Clothing products demonstrate the highest average sales volume
- Front-of-store placement significantly improves product visibility and sales
- College students and families are the dominant customer segments
- Promotions and high-foot-traffic areas strongly influence sales performance
Effective retail strategies require thoughtful product placement combined with a clear understanding of customer demographics. Strategic placement and targeted promotions can substantially improve product visibility and sales performance.
Future research can expand this analysis by:
- Incorporating time-series analysis to study long-term trends
- Applying machine learning models to predict future sales patterns
- Integrating additional datasets for deeper retail insights
