Problem

On an iOS real device, mobilecli fs push, pull and mkdir and rm return "not implemented"; only fs ls works. The simulator and Android already support all five.

Fix

Implement PushFile, PullFile, Mkdir and Rm for real iOS devices over go-ios AFC in devices/ios_fs.go. They reuse resolveAfcClientAndPath, so the three addressing modes fs ls already supports keep working: the media root, a bundle id (house_arrest) and an absolute app container path. Interface signatures are unchanged.

  • push streams 32 KiB chunks, appends the local file name when the remote path is a directory, requires the parent directory to exist, and checks the remote size after close.
  • pull writes a 0600 temp file in the destination directory and renames it on success, so a failed transfer leaves no partial file. Directories are rejected.
  • mkdir creates one level, or every missing level with --parents; it rejects a path component that is a file.
  • rm removes a file or, with -r, a tree. It refuses an empty path and the root, even when recursive.
  • Every path is cleaned and any .. segment is rejected.

The logic runs against a small afcFS interface, so it is unit tested with an in-memory fake and needs no device.

Testing

  • go vet ./..., gofmt -l .: clean
  • go test ./devices/... -race -run Afc -v: push, pull, mkdir, rm and path-cleaning tests pass (multi-chunk transfer, close error, no partial file on read error, root refusal, ..)
  • go test ./... -race: all packages pass except server (TestScreenCaptureSessionFPSValidation: subtests omitted_fps, explicit_zero_fps, positive_fps), which fails the same way on an unmodified main in a checkout without a device and without the embedded agent binaries.

Real device

Built from this commit and run against a physical iPhone (DeviceKit runner reported Agent version 1.0; no runner change needed). Device id omitted.

# Command Result
1 fs push claude-audit-20261101-fs.txt /Downloads/claude-audit-20261101-fs.txt Pushed ...
2 fs ls /Downloads lists the new file (size 49) and the 4 existing entries
3 fs pull /Downloads/claude-audit-20261101-fs.txt claude-audit-20261101-fs.pulled.txt Pulled ...; cmp with the original: identical
4 fs mkdir /Downloads/claude-audit-20261101-dir Created directory ...
5 fs rm /Downloads/claude-audit-20261101-fs.txt and fs rm -r /Downloads/claude-audit-20261101-dir Removed ... (both)
6 fs ls /Downloads equal to the state before step 1

Notes from the device:

  • fs ls returns modTime: 0001-01-01T00:00:00Z for every entry on iOS (existing behaviour, not changed here).
  • With --bundle/bundle-id addressing, fs ls of App Store apps failed with InstallationLookupFailed on this phone (house_arrest only reaches developer-signed apps). Push, pull, mkdir and rm through a bundle id are covered by the unit tests only.

Not included

  • No change to fs ls, the CLI, the RPC surface or the docs; the commands already exist and now succeed on iOS real devices.
  • No golangci-lint run.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • iOS device file operations are now available, including uploading and downloading files, creating directories, and removing files or directories.
    • Downloads are installed only after transfer completes successfully, helping prevent partially written destination files. Uploads preserve an existing file until the replacement has been transferred and verified.
    • Directory creation can include missing parent directories, and removal can be recursive.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Unsafe paths are rejected, and file operations validate destinations and inputs to avoid unintended changes.

Implement the four real-device file operations over go-ios AFC, reusing
resolveAfcClientAndPath (media root, house_arrest by bundle, or an absolute
app container path).

- push streams 32 KiB chunks, appends the local name when the remote is a
directory, requires the parent to exist and verifies the remote size
- pull writes a 0600 temp file and renames it on success, so no partial
file is left behind; directories are rejected
- mkdir supports parents by walking and creating each missing level
- rm refuses the root (and empty paths) even when recursive
- every path is cleaned and any '..' segment is rejected

The operation logic runs against a small afcFS interface so it is unit
tested with an in-memory fake, without a device.

Walkthrough

IOSDevice file operations now use AFC helpers to push and pull files, create directories, and remove files or directories. The implementation adds path checks and transfer-size validation. Tests cover transfers, directory operations, path handling, and error cleanup.

Changes: iOS AFC file operations

Layer / File(s) Summary
AFC setup and path handling
devices/ios_fs.go, devices/ios_fs_test.go
A shared wrapper starts the tunnel, resolves and closes the AFC client, and passes a cleaned path to operation helpers. Path helpers reject .. segments. Tests provide an in-memory AFC filesystem and check path normalization.
Push and pull transfers
devices/ios_fs.go, devices/ios_fs_test.go
Push validates local sources and remote destinations, and stages replacements. Pull writes to a temporary file and renames it into place after a successful copy. Both operations use 32 KiB buffers and verify transfer sizes. Tests cover successful transfers, invalid inputs, transfer errors, cleanup, and multi-chunk data.
Directory creation and removal
devices/ios_fs.go, devices/ios_fs_test.go
Directory creation supports optional parent creation. Removal supports recursive deletion. Tests cover blocked paths, recursive removal, and root-path rejection.

Explanation

The title "feat(ios): implement fs push, pull, mkdir and rm on real devices" matches the main change. The PR replaces the "not implemented" stubs for PushFile, PullFile, Mkdir, and Rm in devices/ios_fs.go with AFC-based operations for iOS real devices. The title is specific and concise, uses a conventional-commit prefix, and does not list files or use vague terms. The changeset also includes unit tests in devices/ios_fs_test.go, which the title does not mention, but that omission is expected and does not make the title misleading.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 72.73% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 11 functions across 2 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Do not truncate the final AFC destination before a push succeeds.

afcClientFS.OpenWrite opens the destination with afc.WRITE_ONLY_CREATE_TRUNC. afcPush then copies directly to that path and reports copy, close, or size-check errors without rollback. A failed overwrite can therefore leave the pre-existing remote file empty or partially written.

Stage the data in a temporary remote file, validate it, and atomically replace the destination. If the pinned AFC API cannot provide atomic replacement, reject overwrites instead of opening an existing destination in truncating mode.

Valid, fixed in e2099f9. afcPush no longer truncates an existing destination before the new content is safely on the device.

  • Destination absent: written in place; on any copy, close or size error the partial file is removed.
  • Destination exists: the new content is uploaded to a sibling staging file (.<name>.mobilecli-<hex>.tmp) and its size is verified. Only then is the old file removed and the content copied into place (size verified again), and the staging file removed. A failed or interrupted upload leaves the old file untouched and the staging file removed.

Limitation: this is not atomic. go-ios (v1.0.211 pinned here, and v1.3.2) does not expose an AFC rename, so a rename-based swap is not possible without hand-rolling the AFC protocol. If the final copy fails, the partial destination is removed and the verified staging file is kept; the error names its path, so the new data is not lost. Only that narrow window can leave the old file gone. If go-ios gains a rename, afcPush can switch to it.

Tests: new TestAfcPushKeepsExistingDestination covers mid-way upload failure, size mismatch, successful overwrite without leftovers, failed final replacement, and a failed new-file write leaving no partial file.

@nicolasMazuryk Thanks for adding staging and failure-path tests. The supplied code confirms that afcPush verifies the staging file before removing the existing destination.

One part of the finding remains: fs.Remove(remote) deletes the old content before the final copy succeeds. If that copy fails, the staging file preserves the new content, but the old content is lost. This improves upload safety, but it does not provide failed-overwrite preservation.

To meet the original requirement without atomic replacement, reject overwrites before removing the existing destination. The thread should remain open for that remaining data-loss case.

Address CodeRabbit review on mobile-next#551.

- afcPush opened the final path with WRITE_ONLY_CREATE_TRUNC, so a failed
or interrupted upload destroyed an existing destination. An existing
file is now replaced via a verified staging file next to it: the new
content is uploaded and size-checked first, and only then is the old
file removed and the content copied into place. A new destination is
written directly and removed again on failure, so no truncated file
remains. go-ios does not expose AFC rename, so the replace is not
atomic; if the final copy fails the verified staging file is kept and
  named in the error.
- TestAfcPull no longer asserts Unix permission bits on Windows.
