Thanks for the suggestions. The library was almost directly lifted from the Lua patterns for which the source is publicly available in C. They do not support minimums and maximums like PCRE does. PCRE (Perl Compatible Regular Expressions) are much more powerful, but would take a lot more work to implement. :)
Remember, this code was intended to run on a microprocessor with a limited amount of program memory (and even less RAM). Implementing full PCRE code would probably take all of the program memory, and RAM, if not more, leaving you nothing for your code.
