An activation's lazy lookups captured the ES API and process tree from
the block that built it, so they were only valid while that block was
alive. Callers may release the block as soon as the activation is built.
The pull request updates executable authorization and configuration, metadata and input validation, rule caching, tamper resistance, and process execution handling. It also changes the protobuf module override.
Changes: Executable integrity recheck and authorization
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Setting and sync propagation Source/common/SNTCommonEnums.h, Source/common/SNTConfigBundle.*, Source/common/SNTConfigurator.*, Source/santasyncservice/*, Source/santad/SNTDaemonControlController.*, docs/src/lib/santaconfig.ts
Adds disableExecutableIntegrityRecheck with unset, false, and true states. Sync preflight, configuration bundles, the configurator, and daemon control propagate the setting.
Protected-file checks and reservation cache Source/common/SystemResources.*, Source/santad/EventProviders/AuthResultCache.*, Source/santad/EventProviders/SNTEndpointSecurityDataFileAccessAuthorizerTest.mm, Source/santad/EventProviders/SNTEndpointSecurityProcessFileAccessAuthorizerTest.mm
Adds a system-protection check based on file flags and boot-volume device identity. Cache entries now use reservation tokens for state transitions and conditional removal.
Executable authorization and cache publication Source/santad/EventProviders/SNTEndpointSecurityAuthorizer.*, Source/santad/EventProviders/SNTEndpointSecurity*AuthorizerTest.mm, Source/santad/SantadTest.mm, Source/santad/BUILD
The authorizer checks executable hashes for eligible cached allows, reserves entries before reevaluation, and disables Endpoint Security caching when cache publication fails.
Typed metadata and archive handling
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Typed plist access and version formatting Source/common/SNTFileInfo.*, Source/common/SNTFileInfoTest.mm, Source/common/BUILD, Source/common/SNTSystemInfo.mm, Source/santactl/Commands/SNTCommandVersion.mm
Replaces the public plist dictionary accessor with typed lookups. Embedded plist roots and bundle metadata are type-checked, and version formatting uses string-valued entries.
Decoded collection type checks Source/common/CoderMacros.h, Source/common/SNTRuleTimeWindowTest.mm
Array and dictionary decode macros now assign decoded values only when they have the expected collection type.
Rule lookup and policy cache
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Execution-rule miss cache keys Source/santad/DataLayer/SNTRuleTable.*
Miss-cache keys now include all execution-rule query identifiers. Cache clearing occurs within the rule-write transaction, and /usr/libexec/trustdFileHelper is added to the critical-system paths.
Rule lookup always enables the miss cache. CEL evaluation errors mark decisions non-cacheable.
Protected-path tamper resistance
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Protected path rename and mount checks Source/santad/EventProviders/SNTEndpointSecurityTamperResistance.*
Rename checks cover exact ancestor directories of protected files. Mount checks cover protected paths, their ancestors, and mounts within protected prefixes.
Execution lifecycle and cooldowns
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Process and activation lifetimes Source/common/processtree/process.h, Source/common/processtree/process_tree_test.mm, Source/santad/CELActivation.*
Process destruction iteratively unwinds uniquely owned ancestors. CEL activation callbacks retain local shared-pointer copies of the API and process tree.
Cooldown keys now include executable hash, CPU type, masked CPU subtype, and authorization method. Tests cover distinct signing identities and architecture slices.
Input and event validation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
JSON and mount argument validation Source/santactl/Commands/SNTCommandRule.mm, Source/santasyncservice/SNTPushClientFCM.mm, Source/santad/EventProviders/SNTEndpointSecurityDeviceManager.*
Rule imports and push messages validate JSON root types. Mount argument parsing skips values that are not strings.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to d59f6
This release narrows ES exec caching on purpose and adds integrity rechecks, so exec-heavy hosts may see more AUTH_EXEC processing. Operators can disable the recheck with a setting. No concrete merge-blocking defect was identified.

Explanation
The title "Release 2026.9" names a release but not the changes in the pull request. The changeset covers many fixes and features, including the cache reservation logic, CEL error handling, and the new disableExecutableIntegrityRecheck setting. The title is vague and generic, so it does not convey which changes the release contains.
Resolution
Rename the pull request to name the main changes, for example a summary of the most important fixes or features in the 2026.9 release. Keep the version in the title if the team uses that convention.

Monitor the AUTH_EXEC load increase from the narrowed ES cacheability.
After this change, the ES exec cache can hold an ALLOW only for SIP-protected targets on the boot volume group. Every exec of other allowed binaries, such as /Applications, Homebrew tools, and build outputs, now reaches santad. Before this change, ES served those execs from its own cache. For unenforced, non-protected targets, line 185 also hashes the whole file on each cached-allow hit, unless DisableExecutableIntegrityRecheck is set.
This tradeoff is intentional and the code comments document it. Before the release reaches fleets with heavy exec workloads (CI hosts, build servers), add or check these metrics:
AUTH_EXEC volume and handling latency.
How often cached allows are re-evaluated after a content recheck. The LOGD at line 187 is the only signal for this today.
Time spent in verifiedSHA256ForExecutable:.
These metrics let operators decide when to set DisableExecutableIntegrityRecheck. They also show whether deadline pressure increases.
