fatx

Original Xbox FATX Filesystem Library, Python bindings, FUSE driver, and GUI explorer.

  • libfatx is a C library for working with the FATX filesystem, a variant of FAT16/32 developed by Microsoft for the original Xbox console.
  • fatxfs is a FUSE driver built using libfatx.
  • pyfatx is a Python module providing bindings to libfatx.
  • gfatx is a graphical utility for working with FATX disk images, built around libfatx.

There is work-in-progress towards a Rust implementation:

  • fatx is a Rust crate for working with the FATX filesystem, like libfatx.
  • fatx-fuse is a Rust crate providing a FUSE driver based on fuser and fatx.

Xbox 360 Support

This adds full read/write support for the Xbox 360's FATX filesystem to libfatx, fatxfs, pyfatx, and the Rust implementation. The 360 uses the same on-disk format as the original Xbox but differs in four ways — byte order (big-endian vs. little-endian), timestamp epoch, timestamp field widths, and date/time field ordering — all of which are now handled automatically via variant auto-detection. Original Xbox support is unchanged and remains fully compatible.

The write path has been verified end-to-end against real Xbox 360 hardware.
