fix: track listened audio and send played receipts - #257
Playing a received voice note currently changes the chat's read state, but never sends a played receipt. The UI also folds played receipts into read ticks, so it cannot show whether an audio was heard.
This change observes actual output advancement in the native and web players and sends a message-identity IPC observation to the account daemon. The session validates the stored message and uses the existing core played API, preserving its privacy policy and group participant routing. It records local playback separately from transport submission, coalesces concurrent observations, and persists submission deduplication. Offline playback stays local with no deferred network job; a later actual play can retry a transport failure. User-directed media switches drain pending actual-playback observations before stopping. Account teardown and failed preparation discard them. Session capture, playback epochs, account binding and a final lifecycle check prevent old playback work from selecting a successor session.
Incoming linked-device PlayedSelf now persists played state and stays distinct through UI translation. Receipts that precede message materialization survive restart in bounded identity metadata, then apply after the entire writer batch. The limit is 4096 unmatched observations per account; ambiguity remains unclaimed, and this metadata never schedules outgoing requests. Audio bubbles show textual "Listened" or "Played by recipient" feedback, preserving the difference between local/linked playback, remote recipient playback and message read. Played state does not regress on duplicate or stale read events. Ordinary audio is eligible for newsletter-origin or view-once content, as in the preserved Web implementation. Linked group plays are applied only when the original message author is preserved in the event. Authorless group plays remain unclaimed even when only one matching row has arrived: the pinned core discards the group receipt recipient (original author), so full linked-group synchronization requires a complementary core fix. Direct linked plays and locally played incoming group notes are supported independently of that limitation.

Both duplicate definitions in the snapshot were compared and are identical. WAWebMsgGetters.getIsAckPlayable restricts ordinary audio to newsletter origin. The official job awaits a receipt ACK. Pinned whatsapp-rust 633f01480fe3a95510172c6312d01484563dcf3c already provides mark_message_played for user/group references and mark_as_played for newsletters. Their successful return confirms transport submission. This PR does not claim server acknowledgement or another device updating from that return.
Validation is entirely synthetic. No real database/session, account pairing, microphone, speakers, outgoing WhatsApp receipt or message was used.
Validation after integrating main 581a312 (account consolidation): all 29 receipt integration tests passed, including the authorless group collision regression across separate writer batches. The downgrade-boundary regression passed with main’s version-targeted retirement rewind and both audio migrations. Test execution used temporary XDG roots and compilation used the standard mbx cache. Chat-store clippy passed with --all-targets --all-features -- -D warnings. Formatting and diff checks passed. Earlier head 3585b6d also passed 2 pure GUI identity/indicator tests and chat-store/GUI all-target/all-feature clippy; those GUI paths are unchanged by the P1 correction. Current-head workspace/platform/wasm integration remains for CI.
The initial implementation also passed 8 session playback/wire-construction tests, 2 shared native/web playback-evidence tests, 5 core status tests, 1 IPC test and 3 daemon offline/logout/account-runtime tests, plus all-target/all-feature clippy for all seven affected packages. These paths are unchanged by the review corrections; the full current-head workspace/platform/wasm suite is left to CI.
No real browser sound or native output device was exercised. Node construction with an absent socket proves core type/addressing/privacy selection, not server acknowledgement or another device updating.
Review follow-up 52144a7: incoming Played now survives store-to-UI hydration; live authorless participant-keyed events cannot mark a loaded group message listened. Three focused synthetic conversion/store-reopen/live-GUI regressions passed, plus session/GUI all-target/all-feature clippy, formatting and diff checks. Direct linked plays continue to update live; group plays require confirmed stored author identity for hydration. No core change.
Main 121a3ea (templates #256) was subsequently integrated without conflicts in 76dc7c5. Business projection, typed selection, revoke cleanup and UI queue allocation accounting are retained alongside the played fixes. Formatting/diff checks passed after this merge; the three focused playback regressions and lint were executed before this final integration, so the merged head's compile/test validation is left to CI.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Audio messages now show a “Listened” status when playback is recorded; sent audio can show “Played by recipient.”
Playback receipts are retained when offline and can be sent when connectivity returns.
Played status appears in message status indicators and remains visible when messages are reopened.
Bug Fixes
Playback receipts are matched to the correct incoming message, avoiding incorrect updates when message IDs are duplicated.
Played status is preserved when older delivery or read updates arrive.
The change adds playback-start detection for native and WebAssembly audio, records eligible playback locally, and optionally sends played receipts. It adds storage and request routing for playback observations, distinguishes Played from Read, and displays the played status in the GUI.

Summary
Detect playback and observe user stops crates/audio/src/*, crates/gui/src/app/media_ctl.rs, crates/gui/src/app/commands.rs, crates/gui/src/app/mod.rs
Audio players report when playback advances. The GUI observes the signal during playback and before user-initiated stops, and resolves a receipt chat only for a unique incoming message ID.
The MarkAudioPlayed request carries a chat JID and message ID. The daemon dispatches it as an action that does not require a live network connection.
Persist and resolve played state crates/chat-store/migrations/*audio_played*, crates/chat-store/migrations/*pending_audio_plays*, crates/chat-store/src/schema.rs, crates/chat-store/src/queries.rs, crates/chat-store/src/store/*, crates/chat-store/tests/receipts.rs
The store records sent receipts and pending observations. It resolves observations against matching messages, handles ambiguous authors and duplicate rows, and limits pending observations per device. Tests cover receipt persistence, matching, reconciliation, and account isolation.
Record playback and submit receipts crates/session/src/whatsapp/*, crates/session/Cargo.toml
The session checks playback eligibility, records local state, and optionally submits a receipt. Failed submissions remain retryable, and stored Played status is retained during message hydration.
Map and display played status crates/core/src/message_status.rs, crates/daemon/src/session_bridge/wire_events.rs, crates/gui/src/app/mod.rs, crates/gui/src/components/message_bubble/*, crates/gui/src/components/status_ticks.rs
The status model adds Played, receipt handling advances eligible messages to it, and the GUI shows “Listened” or “Played by recipient” with the played status tick.
Playing audio now records Played state and sends receipts. Two small edge cases remain: an occasional observation lost to brief lock contention, and unclaimable group-play rows that accumulate in the store. Neither is likely to cause serious failure, so this is mergeable with follow-up.

### Issue 1
crates/gui/src/app/media_ctl.rs:466-467
Playing an older loaded voice note can leave its bubble without “Listened” until it is loaded again. `observe_audio_playback` sends the observation but does not update the loaded message. The resulting store reload carries only the newest messages-normally eight in a read conversation-so it omits older notes already on screen.
Update the matching loaded message after the daemon confirms playback, or send a targeted update instead of relying only on the chat reload.
---
For each issue above, determine whether it is valid and should be fixed. If so, fix it directly.
Summary
Tracks actual audio playback, saves listened state separately from receipt submission, and keeps played receipts distinct from read receipts.
Listening to incoming audio can send its played receipt.
Played receipts from linked devices update audio history.
Audio bubbles show when a note was listened to.
All three supplied previous threads were checked against the current code. User switches drain playback evidence, and both storage and live GUI updates refuse authorless group plays. These threads had no supplied comment numbers.
jlucaso1 acknowledges that full linked-group synchronization remains deferred: the pinned core loses the original author. The PR deliberately leaves those observations unclaimed.

apply and the writer AudioPlayed arm both hardcode 5 for PLAYED. The rest of the store uses wa::web_message_info::Status::PLAYED as i32, for example in receipt.rs. If the two literals drift from the enum, played status breaks silently.

Minor · Performance & Scalability · Quick win
Do not persist authorless group observations that apply can never claim.
For a group PlayedSelf without recipient, author becomes "" and observe inserts a pending row.
audio_played::apply (lines 82-89) always skips rows with an empty author in group, status, and broadcast chats. As a result, these rows are never deleted. Only eviction at the 4096 limit removes them.
This has two consequences:
has_pending stays true after the first authorless group play. Every later writer batch that touches any chat then runs chat_key_candidates and a pending query for each changed chat.
The dead rows use account capacity. They can push out claimable direct-chat observations.
Skip the observe call when the author is empty and the chat is multi-author. Rows marked ambiguous have the same lifetime problem. Delete those rows instead of keeping them, because apply also skips them permanently.

Use a direct-chat fixture for the positive self-play case.
This assertion passes a direct-chat JID with a group Chat. The application obtains both values from the same chat, so the test does not exercise a reachable positive case. Create a separate direct chat with its own incoming row before asserting that direct self-play advances to Played.

try_lock refuses a valid playback whenever another task briefly holds the session slot.
self.session is a tokio::sync::Mutex. Many paths hold it briefly to clone the Arc, for example send_message, send_read_receipts, download_downloadable_media, and AvatarRecorder::record. If mark_audio_played runs during one of those windows, try_lock() fails and live becomes None. The task then returns "No account session". In that case nothing is recorded, not even the local Played state, although the session is alive. The daemon reports Refused, and the observation is lost until the user plays the audio again.
To keep the "never a successor" guarantee without a spurious refusal, take a snapshot that does not depend on async lock contention. Two options:
Keep a session generation counter: an AtomicU64 bumped in open_session and drain_chat_store. Capture it here, lock inside the task, and reject the session if the generation changed.
Mirror the current Arc<Session> in a std::sync::Mutex, which is held only for the clone, and read it here.
