Complete the self-hosted Signal service with sealed stores and ACK delivery - #1
Adds a self-hosted Signal service with encrypted storage, session management, message send/receive, an authenticated HTTP API, SSE, webhooks, delivery acknowledgments and restart recovery.
Updates all 18 existing project copyright headers to Polymorfa (Softium LLC), adds the package author and root NOTICE, and includes LICENSE/NOTICE in the container through the Dockerfile. The existing AGPL license text, Free Software Foundation notice, SPDX identifiers and years are unchanged. Source: 9f5f94fe8042f96ad3532ae262b1f7857fd013ef; core remains pinned to 4b3b13cacd40a27573d0246386db553ef887539b.
Focused attribution/license-preservation and diff checks passed. Offline Cargo package listing included LICENSE/NOTICE but exited 101 because the existing target path is not a directory; package verification remains incomplete. Local native/container suites were not rerun for the notice change. Hosted qualification on head 9f5f94fe8042f96ad3532ae262b1f7857fd013ef is now verified from actual logs: Rust 1.94.0 and stable each passed formatting, Clippy, 51 tests, doctests and a release build; the container build passed and executed the runtime LICENSE/NOTICE copy. All three tested synthetic 87abbd8ff7c124c434aee97e1e6e814e5c1ca775, whose ordered parents and tree exactly match the accepted base plus this head. CodeRabbit was skipped, not an approval. Current proof does not qualify a future core repin; that successor still needs its own CI/review. Browser, live-provider and package-release gates remain, including acceptance of the Rust producer before the final core repin.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added a customer-operated Signal node that connects to Polymorfa, manages configured sessions, and supports sending and receiving messages.
Added an authenticated HTTP API for session status, message sending, event streaming, and acknowledgements, with optional signed webhook delivery.
Added SQLite and PostgreSQL storage options, session leasing, and durable pre-key upload recovery.
Added configurable consent controls for history delivery and app-state key sharing.
Added a container image and command-line options for configuration, version checks, and key generation.
Documentation
Added setup, configuration, API, integration-status, and license documentation.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
This pull request adds a Rust Signal node service with configuration and startup, persistent record and lease stores, Polymorfa connectivity, message processing, durable prekey-upload operations, and an authenticated application API with SSE and webhook delivery.
Adds Rust package and protobuf build setup, a multi-stage Docker image, licensing files, and CI checks for native and container builds.
Configuration and service startup src/config.rs, src/lib.rs, src/main.rs, signal-node.example.toml, README.md, docs/integration-status.md, docs/review-followup-2026-10-27.md
Adds configuration parsing, environment overrides and validation, service startup and shutdown, example settings, and operator and integration documentation.
Fenced storage and key custody migrations/*, src/store/*, src/keys.rs, tests/store_conformance.rs
Adds SQLite and PostgreSQL record and lease stores, scoped key wrapping, and tests for storage conformance and lease fencing.
Polymorfa connection and session lifecycle src/proto.rs, src/link.rs, src/resolver.rs, src/node.rs, tests/support/mod.rs
Adds the WebSocket protocol link, remote resolution, lease-managed sessions, and shared transport test fixtures.
The service is broadly mergeable, but the README should be corrected so operators can discover app-state consent configuration and integrators do not overestimate SSE lag capacity.

Review this exact private producer head c542316. Focus on customer-side key/plaintext custody, HMAC/SSE acknowledgment before mark_delivered, sealed crash replay, lease expiry/fencing, SQL atomicity and server-only auth boundaries. The protobuf contract and library pin are explicit; dependencies remain unmerged whatsapp-rust PR #5. Real-provider and legal gates are recorded rather than claimed complete.
Review the updated exact head 8aa191e. All five prior findings were verified and addressed with native negative tests. Process-incarnation lease tokens prevent same-node-ID sharing; every reconnect acquires a strictly higher durable generation, matching the coordinated runner rule. Released SQL fences cannot write. Mixed ordinary/protocol content survives without exposing foreign app-state shares or unconsented history. Unknown group addressing modes and unusable app secrets are refused; Debug representations redact application payloads/descriptors.
Rust 1.94 fmt, Clippy with warnings denied, 35 native tests with real PostgreSQL/SQLite, and release build pass locally. GitHub Actions jobs were never started due the account billing/spending-limit gate, so hosted CI remains blocked. No live WhatsApp or legal acceptance is claimed.
A regular code review gets triggered (for example, "@codex review" or when a PR is opened), and you’re opted in so security review runs alongside code review
Once complete, Codex will leave suggestions, or a comment if no findings are found.
- Take no free leases without a live Polymorfa link, so a partitioned
replica cannot block failover or reacquire what disconnect released.
- Scope session events to their originating link; a delayed LoggedOut or
Paused from a replaced link no longer retires or reclaims its successor.
- Abandon leases explicitly on expiry and on a failed renewal near the
deadline: release them, and refuse to serve any reacquired generation at
or below an abandoned one when that release fails.
- Reject a project credential that cannot form an Authorization header at
startup instead of retrying the handshake forever.
- Treat an empty group addressing mode as an invalid runner response.
- Report store failures during sends as 503 storage_unavailable.
The process-incarnation test now runs both processes with live links.

Disable credential persistence on both checkout steps.
actions/checkout@v4 writes the GITHUB_TOKEN into .git/config by default. Later steps run cargo build and cargo test. Those steps execute build.rs and code from dependencies, including unmerged git dependencies. None of these steps needs git credentials after checkout. Set persist-credentials: false on both steps.

Count only stream subscribers that can receive the event.
listeners counts every SSE subscriber, including clients that filter by a different session_id (src/http.rs Lines 174-180). Suppose the only connected client filters for session A and an event arrives for session B. The NoListener fast path is skipped, and the event is broadcast and then dropped by the filter. Each receive for session B then waits the full ack_timeout before it fails. Every redelivery repeats this, so session B's receive path stays slow until a matching client connects. This causes no data loss, because the receive fails and redelivers. It does add a fixed delay to every message for unwatched sessions.
You could track subscribers per session filter, or treat a filtered-only subscriber set as having no listener for that session.

After a runner-side pause the runner refuses the old generation. Losing the
session without releasing its durable lease reacquired that same generation
and was refused again forever. Release it, as an abandoned lease, so the
next claim carries a higher generation.

Addressed the current CodeRabbit and Codex findings in f3d6a8c. The fix covers SQLite cancellation/failed commit, unconfirmed sends with the original message ID, successful sends after sender-key bookkeeping failure, metadata-only receives, matching SSE listeners, receipt cleanup and checkout credential persistence. Earlier answered Codex findings were verified against current source and closed. Native checks executed 48 passing cases (two PostgreSQL-gated cases await CI), including 16 HTTP/WebSocket cases; strict Clippy and formatting pass. Details and limitations are in docs/review-followup-2026-10-27.md. Staging test access is being prepared in polymorfa/polymorfa#865; team/project and authenticated access are still needed. No production rollout or live session is claimed.

The service creates one 1,024-entry broadcast channel per session filter. Subscribers sharing that filter use the same channel. The limit is not per HTTP connection. Document the shared per-filter buffer to avoid incorrect recovery and capacity assumptions. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Remember the abandoned fence when disconnect release fails
If the database release fails during disconnected(), the session has already been removed locally, but its generation is never recorded in abandoned. After reconnecting, acquire uses the same process holder token, and decide returns the old generation even after expiry. The replacement session therefore shares a writable fence with any in-flight operations retaining the old session. Unlike the corrected expiry/renewal paths, this disconnect path still bypasses abandon; record the abandoned generation before attempting release so reacquisition cannot serve it.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Revalidate the connection before publishing an acquired session
If the runner connection drops while acquire or activate is awaiting storage, disconnected() can finish its session snapshot before this session is inserted. The insertion then proceeds because only shutdown is checked, and subsequent lease ticks renew the session indefinitely even with no live link, preventing a healthy replica from acquiring it. The new evidence beyond the earlier no-link acquisition finding is this in-flight acquisition race: the initial self.link() guard does not cover the storage awaits. Coordinate publication with disconnect cleanup, or release acquisitions whose originating link is no longer current.
