This PR makes two performance improvements:

  • input texts get sorted before batching and padding to minimize the amount of padding needed. This happens in windows of 8*batch_size so that batching still is a iterator. We could make this configurable but this is a reasonable default from some measurements I made. Order is restored afterwards.
  • Reordered some operations in splade, to take the log of fewer values and avoid additional array copies. This reorder holds true as long as the attention mask is $\in \lbrace 0, 1 \rbrace$.

Put together, I get these performance improvements:

Case main This PR Speedup fastembed / sentence-transformers
MiniLM, profile texts 10.20 s 4.20 s 2.4x 3.4 → 1.4
MiniLM, profile texts, batch 32 7.40 s 3.33 s 2.2x 2.6 → 1.16

  • Python 3.12.15, onnxruntime-gpu 1.31.0 on the CPU execution provider, torch 2.14.1, sentence-transformers 6.1.0.
  • Each case runs in a fresh process. Times are the median of three runs after a warmup.
  • Profile texts are 2 to 10 lines of 5 to 19 words, as in [Performance]: 🐢 Sparse Embedding with SPLADE is Very Slow + OOM For larger batches - Expected Behavior? #539 . Mixed lengths are 90% short texts and 10% texts of 300 to 600 words. MiniLM and bge-small use 1,000 texts, SPLADE uses 300, and ColBERT uses 500.
  • fastembed uses its default batch size of 256 unless the case says otherwise. sentence-transformers uses its default of 32.

This was made with the assistance of Claude Opus 5.5.

📝 Walkthrough

Text embedding now uses length-sorted batches and restores output order in both serial and parallel paths. SPLADE++ post-processing now masks logits before sequence pooling and applies ReLU and log1p to the pooled maximum.

Streaming callers can wait for up to eight inference batches to receive the first embedding instead of one. Bound that delay or provide an opt-out before merging unless this latency tradeoff is accepted.

🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Preserve efficient prefix consumption.

When a caller requests only the first embedding, this loop first reads up to 8 * batch_size documents. If the first document is the shortest and batch_size is 1, restore_order also waits for eight inference batches before yielding it. The previous path needed one batch. Provide an opt-out for length sorting in streaming use, or otherwise bound the work required for the first result. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Hi @tbung, would tests for iter_length_sorted_batches and restore_order be useful here? I can cover generator inputs, multiple windows and a partial final batch, plus output order through the serial and parallel embedding paths.

Thanks for the offer, but I think existing tests already cover this mostly. Maybe @joein has opinions on this.
