Fixes #1604.

Local mode truncates meta.json before serializing it, so one rejected metadata value can prevent every collection in the store from reopening. Serialize first, flush and sync a temporary file, then replace the catalog atomically, keeping the existing file mode and syncing the directory afterwards (best effort). Failed creates close and unregister the new collection; failed updates restore the previous configuration. The async counterpart is regenerated.

Added 40 sync/async tests covering rejected metadata, partial writes, sync/replacement failures, retries, existing points and aliases, and temporary-file cleanup/ownership.

Validation:

  • The original 24 regressions fail on dev and with the source fix withdrawn; all 57 focused tests pass after restoration.
  • Full offline suite against the official qdrant:dev ARM64 server: 1007 → 1041 passed, same 24 skips; all 1031 existing outcomes unchanged.
  • Async generation consistency, changed-file pre-commit hooks, mypy, pyright, doctests and conversion coverage pass.
  • Follow-up for file mode and directory sync: the 6 new tests fail before it; local-mode suites 151 → 157 passed, nothing else changed.
  • All-files pre-commit retains identical upstream formatting debt in 10 unrelated files; those files are unchanged.

📝 Walkthrough

The synchronous and asynchronous local clients now write metadata to a temporary file, flush and sync it, then replace meta.json. They preserve existing metadata permissions when available. Collection updates restore the prior configuration on failure. Collection creation removes and closes the new collection if saving fails. New tests cover persistence failures and collection state.

Local mode now writes metadata atomically and rolls back failed creates and updates. No open issue blocks merging. Ignoring a failed directory sync is deliberate, so a save that already reached disk is not undone in memory.

Explanation

Issue #1604 requires failed metadata saves to preserve the last valid catalog and failed creates to leave no registered collection. The sync and async local implementations serialize before opening a temporary file, flush and sync it, atomically replace meta.json, clean up failed temporary files, and preserve the existing file mode. Failed creates remove and close the new collection. Failed updates restore the previous configuration. The tests cover serialization, partial-write, sync, replacement, retry, reopen, points, and alias cases.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #1604. They update sync and async local persistence, add rollback and cleanup behavior required for failed saves, and add tests for these behaviors. The async implementation mirrors the sync implementation. No unrelated product behavior is shown.

- Around line 212-218: After the existing replacement and cleanup try/except in
the metadata commit flow, add a best-effort parent-directory fsync so the rename
is durable. Guard the operation for POSIX, open the containing directory
read-only, fsync and close its descriptor, and suppress OSError so
directory-sync failures do not propagate or roll back the committed metadata.
- Around line 198-212: Update the metadata replacement flow that installs
temp_path as meta_path to copy the existing meta.json permission bits onto the
temporary file before os.replace. Apply the equivalent change to the regenerated
async_qdrant_local.py implementation.
