What this changes

QdrantClient(host="::1") builds the REST url http://::1:6333 and the gRPC target ::1:6334. Neither is a valid address, so every request fails with httpx.InvalidURL: Invalid port: ':1:6333'. The same happens for any IPv6 address passed as host, sync or async.

QdrantRemote and AsyncQdrantRemote now enclose a bare IPv6 address passed as host in brackets. A host that is already bracketed, a host name, an IPv4 address and the url path are unchanged.

Fixes #1607

Tests

test_client_init checks the REST url for host="::1", host="[::1]", host="::1", port=None and url="http://[::1]:6333".

  • Before the fix: AssertionError: assert 'http://::1:6333' == 'http://[::1]:6333'.
  • After the fix: the test passes, and get_collections() with host="::1" reaches a stub server listening on [::1] from both QdrantClient and AsyncQdrantClient.

QdrantClient(host="::1") built the REST url http://::1:6333 and the gRPC target ::1:6334, so every request failed with InvalidURL: Invalid port. Enclose a bare IPv6 address passed as host in brackets, in both the sync and the async remote client.

📝 Walkthrough

The synchronous and asynchronous remote clients now bracket host values that contain a colon unless the host already begins with [. Initialization tests check IPv6 host formatting with a default port, without a port, and through a bracketed IPv6 URL.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 4ec61

The clients currently form the expected IPv6 gRPC address, but the new tests verify only REST formatting. Adding focused sync and async gRPC assertions is a bounded follow-up; merge risk is low.

Explanation

Issue #1607 requires valid REST and gRPC addresses for bare IPv6 hosts in sync and async clients. Both remote constructors bracket a colon-containing, unbracketed host before assigning the REST and gRPC ports. The gRPC initialization paths pass the normalized host to get_channel. The added test_client_init cases cover bare and bracketed IPv6 hosts, port=None, and bracketed URLs. The supplied PR evidence also reports sync and async get_collections() connectivity.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes are limited to IPv6 host normalization in QdrantRemote and AsyncQdrantRemote, plus focused client initialization tests. These changes directly support issue #1607. No unrelated behavior or files are identified.

Add a gRPC target assertion for bare IPv6 hosts.

These assertions check only rest_uri and use prefer_grpc=False. The sync and async gRPC paths build targets separately, so a regression could leave the REST assertions passing while gRPC receives an invalid target. Add focused sync and async tests that initialize one gRPC channel and assert the target is [::1]:6334.
