Fix(stats): prevent overlapping statistics calculations on refresh - #8684
Disabled Statistics’ Refresh button while requests are running or queued.
Added database-wide coordination to run one statistics calculation at a time, preventing overlapping calculations across browser reloads and user sessions.
Cached results for five minutes per user, collection, and query, with permissions rechecked before reuse.
Added automatic retries for busy responses and stopped retries when leaving Statistics.
Improved request throttling and added regression tests.
Note
Data Views and Statistics share the frontend request queue:
Data Views counts may wait behind pending statistics requests.
Pending Data Views counts also contribute to the loading state that disables Statistics’ Refresh button.
Testing instructions
Use a collection with records that produce visible Statistics results. For the coordination and retry checks, use two browser sessions and a query that takes long enough to keep a calculation running.
Refresh state
Open Statistics and wait for the initial results to load.
Click Refresh.
Confirm the button is disabled while requests are running or queued, and becomes available again when they finish.
Try clicking repeatedly while it is disabled. Confirm no duplicate refreshes start and the results remain usable.
Statistics and Data Views request queue
While a Statistics request is running, trigger a Data Views count; then try the reverse order.
Confirm counts eventually load, the Statistics Refresh button remains disabled while either feature has pending requests, and the loading state clears after completion.
Busy calculation in another session
In one browser session, start a long-running Statistics calculation.
In a second session, start a different Statistics calculation while the first is still running.
Confirm the second request waits and eventually displays results without a user-visible error. Its Refresh button should remain disabled while it is waiting.
Leave Statistics while waiting
While a Statistics request is waiting or retrying, navigate to another page.
Return to Statistics and confirm there is no stuck loading state, the Refresh button is usable when requests have settled, and a new refresh works.
Results across queries or collections
View Statistics for a second query or collection, then return to the first.
Confirm each view shows the appropriate results and switching views does not leave a stale loading state or disable Refresh indefinitely.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Statistics results are cached separately by collection, account, and query, including eligible stored-query statistics.
Busy statistics requests retry automatically. A refresh button shows when statistics are loading and prevents overlapping refreshes.
Bug Fixes
Statistics requests can be cancelled when leaving the page, and loading indicators clear when requests finish or fail.
Read permissions are checked for all tables used by statistics and stored queries, including tables reached through query relationships.
Statistics can still be calculated when caching is unavailable.

Statistics requests now use caching and database-scoped locks. Query table permissions are checked for backend statistics and statistics-marked ephemeral queries. The frontend tracks active requests, retries busy responses, and prevents refresh while work is loading.
Statistics endpoints check table permissions and use cached results and database-scoped advisory locks. Failed lock acquisition returns HTTP 409 with a retry interval. Long lock names are bounded using a SHA-256 digest.
Query execution gathers tables along query field paths and checks read permissions. Tree-rank query handling moves to tree_rank.py, and path traversal moves to query_path.py. Related imports and annotations are updated. Hypothesis is pinned to 6.155.7.
Requests with X-Specify-Statistics: true cache ephemeral query results using execution inputs as the key and store table dependencies for permission checks. Requests without the header continue to execute directly.
Throttled promises track loading by request group, reuse matching fulfilled requests within a group, and release active-request slots after fulfillment or rejection.

Statistics AJAX requests add the statistics header, retry HTTP 409 responses, and support cancellation. Hooks and statistic items use this request path. The page disables refresh during active work and cancels requests during cleanup.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes support [#8639] or its implementation. The stats/ modules add the lock, cache, busy handling, and permission checks. The stored_queries changes add get_query_tables and check_query_permissions, and the ephemeral query cache uses them. StatItems, hooks, requests, throttledPromise, and index.tsx changes add loading state, retries, cancellation, and throttling. The stored_queries refactors (TreeRankQuery moved to tree_rank.py, tables_in_path in query_path.py, QueryConstruct imports moved to query_construct_model) support the new permission traversal and break import cycles. The lock_tables.py separator change reuses the workbench delimiter for lock names. The Response mock and test updates support the new tests. The hypothesis pin in requirements-testing.txt is test tooling only. It is a minor, loosely connected change but not a functional change unrelated to the issue. No unrelated functional change is demonstrated.

Explanation
The PR adds automatic tests. specifyweb/backend/stats/tests.py adds 583 lines covering caching, permissions, locking, busy responses, and failure handling. Frontend tests cover refresh-button disabling, retry and cancellation behavior, loading state, and throttling in three new test files.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#8639] Met in part. The PR adds database-scoped advisory locking in specifyweb/backend/stats/coordination.py. Concurrent calculations from multiple users or sessions now return HTTP 409 through busy_response(). Cached results are reused only after read permissions are rechecked. Statistics Refresh is disabled through StatsRefreshButton while statisticsAreLoading() is true, and refreshPage() returns early while loading. Retries and cancellation on page leave are implemented in requests.ts and index.tsx.
Unmet: the issue requires that the user cannot refresh the page with browser functions such as F5 while statistics are loading. The reviewed head has no browser reload guard. The Statistics page code at head (index.tsx) shows only the in-page button guard and a component cleanup that cancels requests on unmount. No beforeunload or unload handler appears in the PR summary for any changed file. The visible part of index.tsx was truncated at 16000 bytes, so the end of that file was not read. The PR summary does not list such a handler, so this conclusion rests on the summary plus the visible code.
Resolution
Add a Statistics-page guard that runs while statisticsAreLoading() is true. Register a beforeunload handler that calls preventDefault() and returns a value, and remove it when loading ends or the page unmounts. Add a test that asserts the handler is registered while requests are pending and removed after they finish. The server-side lock remains the protection for multiple users and can stay as is.
Full details: Testing Instructions
Explanation
The authored Testing instructions contain only template comments and no actionable steps. The pull request adds backend coordination, caching, Redis fallback, advisory-lock, permission, and ephemeral-query behavior in specifyweb/backend/stats/tests.py. It also adds frontend refresh/loading, retry/cancellation, and shared-throttled-queue tests in Buttons.test.tsx, requests.test.ts, and throttledPromise.test.ts. The description gives no commands, setup requirements, expected results, or manual checks.
Resolution
Replace the template comments with actionable instructions. Include pytest specifyweb/backend/stats/tests.py. From specifyweb/frontend/js_src, include npx jest lib/components/Statistics/__tests__/Buttons.test.tsx lib/components/Statistics/__tests__/requests.test.ts lib/utils/ajax/__tests__/throttledPromise.test.ts or the repository's equivalent Jest command. Document the Django test environment, database-wide lock behavior, Redis configuration and fallback behavior, and permission setup. Add manual steps with expected results for repeated refreshes, browser reloads, concurrent users, HTTP 409 retries, leaving Statistics to cancel retries, and Data Views sharing the queue. State that Refresh remains disabled while work is running or queued and that statistics calculations do not overlap.

Not bad so far! 🥳
I like the idea of caching the query results of statistics in Redis to prevent re-calculation of potentially expensive queries.
This review is for the backend code: I have not yet reviewed all of the frontend code.
With the backend review, I've noticed some bugs of varying severity, left some suggestions for maintainability and further investigation, as well as things to look out for when updating this with main.

Nice work so far! Here's another review for the backend changes.
These comments are relatively minor: In my opinion, I would say none of these would probably be strictly required for merging.
For the sake of maintainability, it would be nice to reify some of the stricter typing and update the unit tests to avoid (or at least be lighter on) mocks/mocking--hence the marking this as a comment instead of approving changes or requesting changes.
A lot of progress from my initial review, though! 👏 .

I pushed some minor improvements/bug fixes and updated this branch with main. You can review all of my changes in d58876c..af4386b (this PR), so feel free to give those a look over!
Just as a note for future enhancement: currently only a single statistics request can be executing at a time for an entire database. We should be able to increase concurrency/parallelism of requests: by allowing more than one of the more "minor" statistics query to run at once, and/or allowing queries that are entirely within different scopes to be executed in parallel (with a reasonable limit on concurrency).
