Owner

P8a of the server plan: the server side of the management screens. Configuration changes, reference file imports and master-resource browsing work over HTTP on a running server, and the server can host the admin app. The screens themselves are P8b.

Owner decisions (2026-10-24):

  • D35: HTTP validate/stage/activate take the document and one to eight fixtures in the body. With a replay quotes file configured, fixtures must prefix it exactly as in the CLI. Without one (live), the staged and activation records say fixture_evidence: "operator_supplied".
  • D36: a distinct ConfigurationWrite action, granted to operator. Writes take Idempotency-Key, and activate/rollback take If-Match with the expected active revision (0 when none). The actor is the verified caller's audit fingerprint, never a body field.
  • D37: the admin app is a separate build served only by this server from admin_ui_dir, so the public Pages demo never publishes it.
  • D38: in required access mode the operator pastes a bearer token, held in page memory only (P8b).
  • D39: a restart-required activation commits while the runtime runs and applies at the next start. The server never restarts itself.

Configuration over HTTP

Route Role Notes
POST /api/v1/configuration/validate operator {document, fixtures}; writes nothing
POST /api/v1/configuration/diff operator {previous, next}, redacted
POST /api/v1/configuration/:id/stage operator (ConfigurationWrite) {document, fixtures, reason, staged_at}
POST /api/v1/configuration/:id/activate operator (ConfigurationWrite) {configuration_version, reason, activated_at, mode, fixtures}
POST /api/v1/configuration/:id/rollback operator (ConfigurationWrite) {to_revision, reason, activated_at, mode, fixtures}; the content version comes from the retained activation
GET /api/v1/configuration/:id/history operator activation audit
GET /api/v1/configuration/:id/versions/:version operator one staged version, redacted, with its fixture evidence
  • Same rules as the CLI: validation and staging run under the capabilities a start composes for the document: its mode, its quote sources and the demo flag. document_capabilities, mode_capabilities, replay_events and fixture_evidence move from the CLI into configuration_admin, and the CLI now uses them.
  • Activation: goes through the new PricingEngine::activate_configuration_with, which validates under the document's capabilities. Its validation shares the engine's one-at-a-time gate, through ConfigurationUseCases::with_capabilities.
  • D39, engine: ConfigurationUseCases::activate loses its running flag. A restart-required command commits while the runtime runs. The engine applies only hot commands to a running runtime and reports restart_required otherwise. A hot activation of a restart-required change is still refused.
  • Fixture evidence (ports): StagedConfiguration and ActivationCommand gain fixture_evidence. Its default, replay_checked, is omitted on serialization, so records written before this change keep their bytes.
  • Limits: bodies up to 4 MiB. Refusals return {"error": {"code", "reason"}} with static reasons only.

Reference

  • POST /api/v1/reference/import: the body is the import file itself, at most 8 MiB.
    • It's parsed by the strict importer, preflighted for version conflicts, then committed through engine.commit_reference like /api/v1/reference/transactions.
    • Refusals carry the importer's diagnostics: section, row, field, code, line and column.
    • The file's idempotency key makes a re-upload return the retained receipt.
    • I used a raw body instead of multipart. It reuses the transaction route's access inspection (the import is classified the same way, including the whole-dataset rule for master changes) and adds no dependency.
    • convex-ext-file gains parse_reference_import and preflight_reference_import; import_reference_file is unchanged in behavior.
  • GET /api/v1/reference/masters/:kind?after=&limit=: current master resources of one kind, in identity order, with a next cursor.
    • It's backed by a new bounded ReferenceRepository::list_masters. redb runs a prefix range scan; the memory repository filters.
    • MasterKind names each kind by its storage prefix. Books stay on /api/v1/books.
    • Listing needs the whole instrument dataset, like the other broad reference reads.

Admin app hosting

  • admin_ui_dir setting (CONVEX_ADMIN_UI_DIR): serves the directory at /admin with ServeDir, falling back to index.html.
    • The files sit outside the API access layer; static assets carry no data.
    • Responses send Content-Security-Policy (scripts and connections to self only, no framing), nosniff and no-referrer, because the page will hold a bearer token.
    • Startup refuses a directory without index.html. Unset, nothing is served.
  • Dependencies: tower-http gains its fs and set-header features, which add http-range-header and mime_guess to the lockfile.

Tests

  • Server, configuration_operator_tests:
    • HTTP validate and diff.
    • Stage against the replay, and without it (operator-supplied).
    • A non-prefix fixture is refused, and a missing key is refused.
    • The retained versions show the actor and the evidence.
    • Activation with If-Match 0, a stale If-Match conflicts, and a hot activation.
    • Rollback to revision 1; its exact retry returns the same record; history has 3 entries.
    • The read-only inspection test was renamed, since mutation routes now exist; POST on the inspection path is still not a route.
  • Server, access_control_tests:
    • The reader-only identity is refused stage, activate, rollback, validate, history and import.
    • The operator is refused a configuration it has no grant for, and is admitted for its own.
    • Master listing needs the instrument wildcard.
  • Server, management_routes (new):
    • A bad import row is located and nothing commits; the re-upload is idempotent; an oversized body gets 413.
    • Master listing order, paging, and the book, unknown-kind, zero-limit and unknown-field refusals.
    • /admin serves HTML, the SPA fallback and JS with the security headers; POST gets 405; nothing is served when unset; startup refuses a directory without index.html.
  • Engine, configuration_activation: the running-runtime test now shows a hot restart-required change refused, then the restart-required commit: revision 4 is active while the runtime keeps revision 3.
  • Adapters:
    • redb retains operator-supplied evidence, and replay-checked records omit the field.
    • The memory repository pages masters.
    • The uploaded-bytes bound and line diagnostics match the file path.

Verification

WSL (Ubuntu):

  • cargo fmt --all --check
  • cargo clippy --locked -p convex-ports -p convex-ext-file -p convex-ext-redb -p convex-engine -p convex-server --all-targets -- -D warnings
  • cargo test --locked --no-fail-fast for convex-ports, convex-ext-file, convex-ext-redb, convex-engine and convex-server: all pass
  • python3 tools/assurance/check.py --base af95c661: passed
  • tools/core_workflow.py, tools/core_snapshot_workflow.py, tools/core_ingestion_workflow.py against the debug binaries: passed

Windows native, RUSTFLAGS=-Dwarnings cargo test --locked --no-fail-fast -p convex-ext-redb -p convex-server -- --test-threads=1:

  • Everything passes except one result in the full run: access_websocket_tests::websocket_aliases_subscription_scopes_delivery_and_quota_release_use_current_authority failed once with a WebSocket ResetWithoutClosingHandshake, just after a heavy compile.
  • That test then passed in all three reruns of its file. This PR does not touch the WebSocket path.

Follow-ups

  • P8b: the admin app (runtime, reference browse/edit, curve recipes, books, configuration diff/activation, import).
  • The runtime screen will show a pending restart by comparing the active revision with the runtime's accepted revision.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added HTTP tools for validating, comparing, staging, activating, rolling back, and reviewing configuration versions.
    • Restart-required configuration changes can be committed for the next start; hot activation is rejected when a restart is required.
    • Added reference-data import and paginated master-record browsing.
    • Servers can optionally host an admin app at /admin, with security response headers.
  • Access & Reliability
    • Configuration operations require operator access. Import preflight checks can report row-level conflicts before changes are committed.

…TTP; host the admin app

Operators validate, diff, stage, activate and roll back configuration on a
running server under a new ConfigurationWrite action (D36). Fixtures are
checked against the replay file when one runs, else recorded as
operator-supplied (D35). A restart-required activation commits while the
runtime runs and applies at the next start (D39). Reference import files
upload as the request body, master resources list by kind, and
admin_ui_dir serves the admin app at /admin (D37).

Walkthrough

The pull request adds HTTP configuration management, changes how restart-required activations are committed, adds reference import and master-list endpoints, and enables optional static admin UI serving.

Changes: Configuration Management

Layer / File(s) Summary
Activation behavior and evidence contracts
crates/convex-ports/src/configuration.rs, crates/convex-engine/src/configuration.rs, crates/convex-engine/src/lib.rs, crates/convex-engine/src/snapshot.rs, crates/convex-engine/tests/*, crates/convex-ports/tests/support/configuration_fixtures.rs, crates/convex-ext-redb/tests/configuration_activation.rs, crates/convex-engine/CONFIGURATION.md
Configuration records now include fixture evidence, defaulting to replay-checked evidence when omitted. Restart-required activation can commit while leaving the running runtime’s accepted revision unchanged. A hot activation that requires restart is rejected.
Configuration HTTP operations
crates/convex-server/src/configuration_admin.rs, crates/convex-server/src/routes.rs, crates/convex-server/src/access/*, crates/convex-server/src/error.rs, crates/convex-server/src/lib.rs, crates/convex-server/src/bin/convex-config.rs, crates/convex-server/tests/access_control_tests.rs, crates/convex-server/tests/configuration_operator_tests.rs, crates/convex-server/ACCESS.md, crates/convex-server/README.md
The server adds configuration validate, diff, stage, activate, rollback, history, and version operations. Handlers check capabilities and fixture evidence, require idempotency keys and revision preconditions for selection, and record audit metadata. Access policies and tests cover these routes. The CLI uses shared capability and replay helpers.

Reference Data Management

The reference repository interface and implementations add bounded master listing by kind and cursor. Tests cover ordering, pagination, empty results, and invalid limits.
Import parsing and preflight
crates/convex-ext-file/src/reference_import.rs
Reference imports can be parsed from bounded byte input. Preflight checks idempotency and compares expected versions with repository state before commit.
Reference management routes
crates/convex-server/src/reference.rs, crates/convex-server/src/routes.rs, crates/convex-server/src/access/http.rs, crates/convex-server/tests/management_routes.rs, crates/convex-server/ACCESS.md
The server adds reference import and master-list endpoints. The routes enforce request limits and access checks, validate listing queries, and return import diagnostics.

Admin UI Serving

Layer / File(s) Summary
Admin app configuration and serving
crates/convex-server/src/config.rs, crates/convex-server/src/lib.rs, crates/convex-server/Cargo.toml, crates/convex-server/tests/management_routes.rs, crates/convex-server/README.md
Server configuration accepts an optional admin app directory. Startup validation requires index.html when configured. The server serves assets under /admin, falls back to index.html, and sets response security headers.

Add a redb test for list_masters.

The only test of this contract, uploaded_bytes_share_the_file_bound_and_masters_list_by_kind_in_pages, runs against MemoryReferenceRepository. The redb implementation selects results with a different mechanism. It uses the key range "{prefix}/" to "{prefix}0", and an exclusive cursor key. Nothing tests that range arithmetic. A regression there could leak records across kinds or skip records at page boundaries, and the memory test would not catch it.

Add a test in crates/convex-ext-redb/tests/reference_master.rs. It should commit masters of at least two kinds, then check:

  • kind isolation
  • cursor pagination order
  • an empty final page
  • rejection of limit == 0 and limit > MAX_REFERENCE_PAGE

The results must match the memory repository.

ConfigurationWrite widens the existing operator role without a separate grant.

Action::ConfigurationWrite uses the same Role::Operator check as Operate. Existing policy files that grant operator for inspection now also allow staging, activating and rolling back configuration. Activation changes the pricing configuration. No policy edit is needed for this widening, so it happens silently on upgrade.

Add a dedicated role, for example configuration_writer, and map ConfigurationWrite to it. Alternatively, document the widening as an upgrade note for policy owners. ACCESS.md already says to combine roles deliberately.

Proposed change

+            Self::Operate => roles.contains(&Role::Operator),
+            Self::ConfigurationWrite => roles.contains(&Role::ConfigurationWriter),

Add Role::ConfigurationWriter to the enum. Update the Role docs, ACCESS.md and the access tests.

Report failed runtime application as requiring restart.

For a running hot activation, refresh_configuration can return an error. The code discards that error and sets restart_required to false. The response must report restart_required: true when the activation was not applied.

A replay file with more than 4,096 events makes every HTTP configuration write fail with 429.

replay_events returns CapacityExceeded when it reads the 4,097th event. evidence calls it on every validate, stage, activate and rollback request, and respond maps the error to 429 CONFIGURATION_CAPACITY_EXCEEDED.

The runtime accepts replay files up to 100,000 events. Fixtures are limited to 4,096 events in total, so the prefix check never needs more than the first 4,096. A larger replay file makes the whole route group unusable. The 429 status also wrongly suggests a retry.

Stop reading at 4,096 events instead of failing. A fixture with more than 4,096 events still fails the length check in fixture_evidence. crates/convex-server/src/bin/convex-config.rs calls the same helper, so the CLI gets the same fix.

190 - 193:
Update replay_events to stop reading and return the collected events once it
reaches 4,096, rather than returning CapacityExceeded; update its doc comment to
state that it reads at most the first 4,096 events. Preserve fixture_evidence’s
length validation so oversized fixtures still fail.

…l restart (#152)

* Server P8b: runtime names its configuration, retained versions diff on the server, review fixes

- Runtime health reports the running plan's configuration id, so the admin app
can find its configuration and compare the active revision with the accepted one.
- GET /api/v1/configuration/:id/diff?from=&to= compares two retained versions on
the server and returns field names and reload classes only (operator, with the
  configuration grant).
- A hot activation whose runtime refresh fails reports restart_required: the
commit stands and applies at the next start (CodeRabbit, #151).
- The replay check reads only the first 4,096 events, the most a fixture trace
can prefix, instead of refusing a longer replay with 429 (CodeRabbit, #151).
  The CLI shares the helper.

* Server P8b: the admin app; a running runtime keeps its selection until restart

- admin/: a separate React/Vite app served by convex-server from admin_ui_dir:
runtime health, results and pending restart; reference browse and edit as a
whole-record transaction; file import with row diagnostics; curves and books
(read-only); configuration history, staged versions, version diff, validate,
stage, activate and rollback. The bearer token stays in page memory. Documents,
fixtures and edits are sent as written: numbers keep their scale (lossless-json),
because the server compares 1.0 and 1 as different values.
- Engine: after a restart-required activation commits on a running server, later
  quotes keep pricing under the accepted selection instead of failing the runtime;
a start whose plan does not fit the active selection is still refused, and a hot
activation is reported applied only when the runtime accepted that revision.
- Server: admin_ui_dir requires the page's own origin in access.cors_origins,
because browsers send it on the page's script and writes and the origin guard
  admits listed origins only.
- CI: an Admin App job runs npm ci, eslint, vitest and the type-checked build.

* Server P8b: review fixes for import upload, editor remount and deferred activations

- Import sends the chosen file as the raw body; JSON-encoding a File sent {}.
- The reference editor remounts for each new draft, so a second record's
command is not replaced by the first.
- A runtime that defers a restart-required activation keeps readiness on the
revision it accepted, so a later hot change does not leave it Degraded.
- A runtime that started without a selection keeps pricing under its plan after
a restart-required activation instead of refusing quotes.
