Summary

P10b-iv: each bond is judged only on its own inputs (D58), and the runtime is ready once one result is accepted (D58a). This is the next step in the approved P10b order, after #162.

Before this PR, every valuation took the snapshot-wide quality. One quiet bond's stale quote, or two bonds ticked further apart than max_source_skew_ms, failed every bond in the tick, and /ready returned 503 until every bond was fresh again (G24).

One dependency set per valuation (convex-ports).

  • MarketSnapshot::inputs(id, curves) returns an InputSet: the instrument's quotes (quotes_for), a floating note's fixings, and the required curves named in curves.
  • MarketSnapshot::quality_of(&InputSet) derives quality from that set at the snapshot's own time. curve_quality(id) gives one curve's quality (Invalid when the snapshot does not hold it).
  • derive_quality is now the same derivation over a set that holds every input. Its issue order and classification are unchanged, so archived snapshots still pass verify(). D55's fingerprint will read the same InputSet.

Engine.

  • A valuation is judged on the configured curves its model passes to pricing:

    • a callable: the discount curve;
    • a floating rate note: the discount and FRN reference curves;
    • any other bond: the discount and swap curves, and only when it asks for a spread or curve-risk measure.

A bullet with mid-only measures reads none, and no snapshot valuation reads the government curve.

  • worker::value derives the instrument's quality once. The admission gate, the failure envelope and the valuator's results all use that value: the runtime calls the new value_built_judged, and the public value / value_built still derive it themselves.

  • Graph: a Curve node committed under a snapshot takes its curve's quality; any other non-valuation node is Valid, since capture already requires its dependencies Complete and Valid.

  • Live deadline: each record carries its own live_valid_until (its quote fields, overrides on its quote keys, and its curves or calibration when it reads curves). The actor arms the deadline after calculate and after restore_results, from the records whose quality it accepts, plus the override expiry. A stale bond's past expiry is never armed, so it cannot re-run the tick.

Readiness (D58a).

  • ready = accepted activation, no lost delivery, empty outbox, nothing pending, and at least one result Complete with an accepted quality.
  • RuntimeHealth.failed_instruments counts the rest. quality keeps its rule (Stale once a deadline has passed, else the first refused result's quality, else Demo, else Valid).
  • The admin runtime page shows a warning badge when failed_instruments > 0. RUNTIME.md's readiness table, restart and deadline sentences are updated.

Deviations from the plan's wording

  • FRN fixings. The plan said "the fixings its contract requires and the plan's explicit fixings on its index". This PR uses the fixings keyed on the note's pinned rate index and fixing source (RateIndexDefinition::{index_id, fixing_source}), the same filter value_floating applies before the library sees them. It needs no contract rebuild per tick.
  • needs_images dropped from ready. D58a's list omits it, and keeping it would hold /ready at 503 for one quiet bond, which is G24 again. A bond with no image since start publishes a failed result of its own.
  • Curves by role (f7aac65, after review). The design judged every required curve for any valuation that reads curves, so a stale FRN reference or government curve would have failed every fixed bond's spread valuation. A valuation is now judged only on the curves it reads, as listed above. The government curve is read by no snapshot valuation and now counts only in the snapshot-wide quality.
  • Quality derived once. The design kept a second derivation inside SnapshotValuator::price. The second commit passes the runtime's value through instead.

Behaviour that changes beyond the stale-bond case

  • A mid-only context no longer fails on a stale or missing curve it does not read. Three existing tests that relied on a curve expiry failing such a context now add z_spread_mid to their plan: cvx005_ac2_… (engine runtime.rs), dependency_failure_preserves_liveness_… (access_control_tests.rs) and liveness_is_separate_from_readiness_… (runtime_integration_tests.rs).
  • Demo quality is carried only by curves. In a demo composition a mid-only bullet is Valid; the showcase asks for spread measures, so its results stay Demo.
  • One-instrument snapshots otherwise give the same answer as before.

Open question for the owner

After a delivery loss, readiness still waits for every key's new image: delivery_lost clears only when needs_images empties. That is the same one-quiet-bond case; changing it is a separate decision.

Tests

  • snapshot_contracts.rs::instrument_quality_reads_only_that_instruments_inputs: one bond's set excludes another's stale quote, source skew and missing fixing; a curve counts only when the set names it; a one-instrument set that reads the stale curve equals the snapshot-wide quality.
  • snapshots.rs::a_stale_curve_counts_only_for_a_valuation_that_reads_it: a stale curve in the government and FRN reference roles leaves a fixed bond's Z-spread valuation Valid; the same curve as its swap curve makes it Stale.
  • frns.rs: a missing fixing on another index fails the snapshot but not the note.
  • graph_snapshots.rs::a_stale_bond_beside_a_shared_curve_node_leaves_the_curve_valid.
  • runtime.rs::live_judges_each_bond_only_on_its_own_inputs (two-bond Live plan): bonds ticked 600 ms apart under a 500 ms skew policy both value; when one quote ages out, that bond fails STALE_INPUT with its last-good kept, the other is unchanged, the runtime stays ready with failed_instruments == 1, and the tick does not re-run.
  • runtime.rs::a_stale_curve_fails_only_a_context_that_reads_curves.
  • runtime_setup.rs::widen no longer widens max_source_skew_ms; subscription_source.rs accepts more than one subscribed id.

Numbers

Medians, ci profile, WSL2, same machine as #162. Main and the branch were run back to back today:

Case main 156fb3f 829b8b5 (2 runs) f759ffe
live_tick 296 µs 305–312 µs 289 µs
1 bond, bursts of 64 655 µs 626–635 µs 595 µs
16 bonds, bursts of 64 2.77 ms 2.75–2.77 ms 2.60 ms
256 bonds, bursts of 64 19.0 ms 19.6–19.9 ms 18.7 ms
256 bonds, bursts of 512 36.7 ms 36.7–38.3 ms 38.3 ms
snapshot/assemble/256 4.64 ms 4.64–4.68 ms 4.92 ms

The cost of D58 is within this machine's noise.

  • snapshot/assemble does run changed code (MarketSnapshot::new derives quality through InputSet::all). But 829b8b5 benched it at main's number twice, and f759ffe changes no convex-ports code, so its 6% move in the last column is drift.
  • The f759ffe column ran while the WSL wall clock was stepping (seven steps of 1.1–1.7 s in 90 s, all inside the bench window; see Verification). That is why it holds both the fastest live_tick and the slowest 512-quote burst.
  • 829b8b5 derived quality twice per valuation; f759ffe derives it once.

Verification

Each item ran in WSL on f759ffe unless noted. On f7aac65 (the review fix): fmt, clippy (same crates), the assurance check, convex-ports tests and the full convex-engine suite (203 passed, 1 ignored, none failed) all pass; the bench was not rerun, since the fix only shrinks each valuation's curve set.

  • cargo fmt --check passes.
  • tools/assurance/check.py passes with and without --base 156fb3f0.
  • Clippy -D warnings passes on convex-ports, convex-engine, convex-server and convex-ext-redb (all targets).
  • Tests, all with --locked:
    • convex-ports: all passed (829b8b5; f759ffe does not change ports).
    • convex-engine: 201 passed, 1 ignored, 1 failed in the full run; the runtime file then passed 3 of 3 runs (22 tests each).
    • convex-server: 266 passed on 829b8b5. f759ffe is not run locally; CI runs it.
  • Not run natively on Windows; CI's "Server on Windows" covers it.

Flaky tests seen locally. None of them is changed by this PR:

  • runtime::live_ticks_stay_complete_past_the_result_cache_capacity and the live_tick bench each waited 5 s for a one-bond tick that never published, once each, in the same session. The same test timed out once before, at P9c-iii.
    • A clock monitor running beside the rerun recorded seven wall-clock steps of 1.1–1.7 s against the monotonic clock in 90 s, most of them forward then back.
    • accept refuses a quote whose receive time is earlier than the last one's. The error leaves run_inputs, and run unsubscribes, marks health Failed and stops. A backward step between two ticks therefore stops the runtime, and nothing more publishes. That check is unchanged from main.
    • Whether a backward wall-clock step on a production host should stop a Live runtime is a separate question, not taken up here.
  • runtime::actual_file_replay_and_prefix_checked_restart_are_deterministic timed out once on its 5 s replay wait in a slow run, then passed 3 of 3.
  • api_integration_tests: test_delete_portfolio (400 vs 204) and test_create_and_get_bond (404 vs 200) each failed once; 2 of 3 reruns passed all 166 tests. Both are CRUD tests D58 does not touch.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Runtime health reports the number of instruments with incomplete or unaccepted results. The runtime page displays a warning badge when any instruments have failed.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Instrument valuations are assessed using the market data they depend on. Stale or missing inputs affect the relevant instruments without unnecessarily invalidating results that use other inputs.
    • Live valuations expire according to the validity of their own inputs, rather than snapshot-wide quality.
    • Runtime readiness can be maintained when at least one instrument has a complete result with accepted quality.

…diness needs one accepted result (D58a)

A result's quality and admission now come from the inputs its own valuation
reads: its selected quotes, a floating note's fixings on its index and fixing
source, and the required curves when its model or measures read curves. One
stale or missing input fails only the bonds that read it. The snapshot keeps
its snapshot-wide quality for its identity, fixture checks and the hedge gate.

- Ports: MarketSnapshot::inputs, quality_of and curve_quality over one
derivation; the snapshot-wide quality is that derivation over every input,
with unchanged issue order, so archived snapshots still verify.
- Engine: valuation admission, failure envelopes and measure quality read the
instrument's quality. A graph curve node takes its own curve's quality.
- Live: each record carries its own instrument's expiry; the deadline is armed
from accepted results only, so a stale bond never re-runs the tick.
- Readiness needs one Complete result on accepted inputs; health adds
failed_instruments, shown on the admin runtime page.

Update the statement that stale curves block all runtime results.

This sentence says required missing, stale or invalid curves block runtime results. The new text at lines 29-36 says a bond reads curves only when its model is callable or floating, or when it requests a spread or curve-risk measure. A mid-only context now stays valid when a curve is stale. The test a_stale_curve_fails_only_a_context_that_reads_curves shows this. Limit the sentence to contexts that read curves.

Select only curves consumed by the valuation.

required_curves contains every configured curve role, but MarketSnapshot::inputs(..., true) passes all of them to every curve-reading valuation. A stale government or FRN-reference curve can therefore mark a fixed-bond spread valuation stale even when its pricing path reads only the discount and swap curves. Pass only the curve IDs used by the model and requested measures at this input-selection boundary.

A callable reads the discount curve, a floating rate note the discount and FRN reference curves, and another bond the discount and swap curves only for a spread or curve-risk measure. No snapshot valuation reads the government curve, so it counts only in the snapshot-wide quality. RUNTIME.md says a bad required curve blocks only the results that read it.

Limit each note's fixings to its own due observations.

MarketSnapshot::inputs selects fixings only by index_id and source. A note that shares an index and source with another note can therefore receive that note's required fixings. If a fixing required only by the other note is missing, this note's quality becomes Invalid.

The snapshot's required fixing set is the union of the request's explicit fixings and every floating note's due_fixings. This makes the selected set for one note include observation dates that only another note requires.

The per-instrument selection does not bound this. inputs has only the instrument id and curve names. It cannot recover each note's due dates, because FloatingNote::due_fixings is pub(crate) in convex-engine, while inputs is in convex-ports. A correct fix needs the snapshot to record each instrument's required fixing keys when it is assembled, and inputs to select from that record. No patch is given here because that change alters the snapshot's stored contract.

Review comment at @crates/convex-ports/src/snapshot.rs around lines 495 - 498:
Update the snapshot data assembled for MarketSnapshot to retain each
instrument’s required fixing keys, then change MarketSnapshot::inputs to select
fixings using that instrument-specific record instead of matching only index_id
and source. Preserve the existing behavior for explicitly requested fixings
while excluding due observations required only by other notes.
