Server P11d: the ingress absorbs a backward clock step of up to 5 s, and a Live restart after a delivery loss is a fresh start (D70, D71) - #169
P11d: the two P11 owner questions get a deterministic answer (D70, D71, approved 2026-10-29). No speedup is claimed.
Change
D70, a backward clock step at the HTTP ingress.QuoteIngress stamps receipt time as max(clock, last stamp) while the clock is behind the last stamp by at most MAX_CLOCK_STEP_MS (5 s). While the clock is further behind, every batch is still refused with 503.
Before, any step refused every batch for as long as the clock was behind, so an NTP step of s seconds refused s seconds of quotes.
FUTURE_SOURCE_TIME compares a source time with the stamp.
A step is logged once, at warn, and the log re-arms once the clock passes the last stamp.
The runtime is unchanged. Its receipt-order check allows equal stamps, and a Live cutoff is already the maximum of the last cutoff, the receipt time and the clock, so a stamp up to 5 s ahead is accepted.
The clock is read under the queue lock, so readings follow queue order. submit passes the wall clock to a private submit_with_clock, and the unit tests pass their own.
D71, a Live restart after a delivery loss is a fresh start. The stored Live reservation never holds delivery_lost, and a Live start clears it.
Before, a loss reached the store only if lose_delivery's revisions crossed a 2^20 reservation block. So a restart usually forgot the loss, and rarely waited for every key's image.
Now each bond without an image fails on its own (D58), and readiness needs one accepted result (D58a).
Within the process nothing changes: a delivery loss still stops the runtime.
The engine tests' Live stamps never step back. The tests and the live_tick bench stamped chrono::Utc::now() directly, so a WSL clock step made the runtime refuse the quote and stop.
live_tick timed out this way in 5 of 8 runs at P11b-i.
They now use monotone_stamp() in tests/support/subscription_source.rs, as the throughput bench's Quotes already did, and as the ingress now does.
Plan cutoffs still read the clock.
RUNTIME.md describes both. The RuntimeCheckpoint::delivery_lost doc says a stored Live image never holds it.
Behaviour that changes
POST /api/v1/market/quotes queues batches during a backward clock step of up to 5 s, stamped with the last receipt time, instead of answering 503. The 503 reason for a larger step is "server clock moved backwards by more than 5 s".
A Live restart from a stored image that holds delivery_lost is ready after one accepted result.
Stored bytes are unchanged; delivery_lost stays in the schema.
Tests
market.rs, a_clock_behind_by_up_to_the_bound_repeats_the_last_stamp_and_beyond_it_refuses, with set clock values:
a clock behind by exactly the bound stamps the last stamp and queues;
a source time between the clock and the stamp is accepted, and one past the stamp is FUTURE_SOURCE_TIME;
one millisecond beyond the bound gives 503;
once the clock is back within the bound, batches get the last stamp again;
once the clock passes the last stamp, batches are stamped with the clock again;
the runtime receives the queued events in order, with those stamps.
market.rs, a_clock_step_is_logged_once_until_the_clock_catches_up: the warn flag is set once per step and clears when the clock catches up.
setup: a two-bond Live plan restarts from a stored image with delivery_lost set;
one quote for one bond publishes that bond's complete result and makes the runtime ready; the other bond keeps its failed record;
the next stored image does not hold the loss.
With one bond, one image would clear the loss anyway, so the test needs two.
Verification
WSL, --locked:

RUSTDOCFLAGS=-Dwarnings cargo doc --no-deps --all-features for convex-ports and convex-engine.
cargo test -p convex-ports: 43 passed.
cargo test -p convex-engine: 209 passed, 1 ignored (one new test).
cargo test -p convex-ext-redb -p convex-ext-file -p convex-server -- --test-threads=1: 355 passed (two new ingress tests).
tools/assurance/check.py, alone and with --base 276c4d3b: passed.
With the two D71 lines reverted, the restart test fails on its readiness assertion.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
After a Live restart following delivery loss, readiness requires one newly accepted result; previously stored images don’t count. The runtime can become ready even if another instrument remains failed.
Quote submissions tolerate clock shifts backward by up to five seconds by reusing the last receipt time. Larger shifts temporarily return an unavailable response until the clock catches up.
Documentation
Clarified Live readiness after delivery loss and conditions that can temporarily prevent quote submission.
Live checkpoint restoration clears delivery-loss state, and tests cover readiness after restart following a loss. Quote ingress stamps batches monotonically across backward wall-clock steps up to 5 seconds and rejects larger steps. Tests and benchmarks use a monotone timestamp helper.

Summary
Stamp quote batches across backward clock steps crates/convex-server/src/market.rs, crates/convex-engine/RUNTIME.md
Quote ingress reuses the last receipt timestamp for backward clock steps of up to 5,000 ms. Larger steps return unavailable. Tests cover the limit, source-time validation, and logging-state reset.

Explanation
The title names two changes: the ingress absorbs a backward clock step of up to 5 s, and a Live restart after a delivery loss is a fresh start. Both appear in the changeset. The market.rs change adds a 5,000 ms backward-step tolerance with MAX_CLOCK_STEP_MS, and actor.rs, runtime.rs, and RUNTIME.md cover the delivery_lost fresh-start behavior. The title is specific and matches the main changes. It is long (137 characters, 28 words), but it reflects the actual scope.

Persist the cleared flag during Live restoration.
163-180: Minor · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win
Persist the cleared flag during Live restoration.
When an existing checkpoint has delivery_lost=true, restore clears only the active checkpoint. The !absent branch does not write it back. If the runtime stops before a reservation-triggering save, the durable image still contains delivery_lost=true, which violates the RuntimeCheckpoint contract.
Persist the sanitized checkpoint as the next CAS revision in this restore path. Update the active and reserved revisions using the same commit and reconciliation semantics as normal saves.

Re-arm backward-step logging only after the clock passes the last stamp.
58-60: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Re-arm backward-step logging only after the clock passes the last stamp.
When clock_ms == last_receive_ms, behind <= 0 clears self.stepped. A subsequent backward tick then logs again, although the clock has not passed the last stamp. This violates D70's requirement that each backward step is logged once.
Suggested fix
- if behind <= 0 {+ if clock_ms > self.last_receive_ms {
self.stepped = false;
return Ok(clock_ms);
This localized change preserves the existing timestamp and backward-step behavior. It only prevents equality from re-arming the warning.

Review comment at @crates/convex-server/src/market.rs around lines 58 - 60:
Update the `behind` check in the clock-stepping method so `self.stepped` is
reset only when `clock_ms` is strictly greater than `self.last_receive_ms`.
Preserve the existing timestamp return and backward-step behavior, and do not
re-arm logging when the clock equals the last stamp.
