Server P11c: each request-time product reads only the curves it uses, once per context (G33, D69) - #170
P11c: each request-time product reads only the curves it uses (G33, D69, approved 2026-10-29). This is the last P11 slice. No speedup is claimed.
Before, request_context resolved and built the configuration's discount and swap curves for every request, before it knew the product. So:
a stale or missing swap curve refused callables and notes, which never read it;
a callable or note then resolved and built its own curves again in prepare;
a batch's x-convex-curve-versions listed the bullet curves, and never a note's projection curve.
Change
request_context reads the activation and the pricing configuration only.RequestContext keeps the cutoff and the curve store.
Each product path reads its curves at first use, and the context keeps every set it resolved (RequestContext::read, crate-private).
Bullets read the discount and swap curves, as before (curves_for, now async and &mut self).
A callable or note reads the curves read_curve_ids names: a callable its discount curve, a note its discount and FRN reference curves.
A set is keyed by its roots and resolved once per context. A failed resolution is kept too, so a batch reads a stale curve once and gives every bond that reads it the same refusal.
The roots come from the configuration's roles, so a context holds at most three sets (MAX_CURVE_SETS). A fourth would be refused with CapacityExceeded.
prepare takes its curves from the context. It no longer takes the storage adapter. The valuation still builds them once more from the snapshot's recipes, as planned.
The context reads curves at its own cutoff, so prepare refuses a known_at that differs from it (InvalidInput). Every caller already passes the same cutoff to both.
pins() lists every curve the request read, each once, in first-use order. It returns a Vec. A set that failed to resolve lists nothing. Batch headers and the body's context.curves use it, so they now include a note's projection curve. For a single bullet, callable or note the list is unchanged.
value_request, value_stored, runtime_quote and runtime_item take the context as &mut. Handlers run their items in sequence, so no lock is needed.
TraitError and CurveResolutionError derive Clone, so a kept failure can be returned again.
convex_request_context_seconds now times the activation read only. Curve builds are still recorded under convex_curve_build_seconds{path="request"}. The server README says so, and describes per-product curve reads and the batch's curve list.
Behaviour that changes
A stale or missing swap curve no longer refuses callables and notes. It still refuses bullets with 422 MISSING_INPUT.
A batch no longer fails as a whole when a curve cannot be resolved. Each bond that reads the curve fails on its own in errors (200), and the rest still price. Before, the whole batch was refused with 422. No existing test asserted the 422.
A bond the configuration does not cover is 422 NOT_COVERED even when a curve is also missing. Before, the up-front curve read answered MISSING_INPUT first.
A batch's x-convex-curve-versions and context.curves list the union of the curves its bonds read. A batch in which no bond read a curve sends an empty header.
convex_request_context_seconds no longer includes curve resolution.
The request_time/request_context bench now measures the activation read only. request_time/context_curves_price, which adds curves_for and the router price, is the comparable end-to-end number.
Stored bytes, ids and the stream are unchanged.
Tests
request_time_products.rs, against a started runtime, under configuration version 3: version 2 plus a swap benchmark, USD-SWAP.
a_stale_swap_curve_refuses_bullets_and_still_prices_callables. The swap curve's only revision is marked stale. Then:
POST /quote for the bullet gives 422 MISSING_INPUT, naming USD-SWAP;
GET /quotes/CALL-001 prices, with x-convex-curve-versions: USD-FIXTURE@7;
a batch of both fails only the bullet, prices the callable, and lists USD-FIXTURE@7 only.
a_batch_lists_each_curve_it_read_once. The swap curve is fresh. A batch of a bullet, a callable and a note reads three sets that share the discount curve. Its header and context.curves are USD-FIXTURE@7,USD-SWAP@7,USD-SOFR-PROJECTION@7, and each item's snapshot.curves lists its own product's curves.
Both fail on main's engine and server sources:
the callable is refused with 422;
the batch header misses the projection curve.
Verification
WSL, --locked:
cargo fmt --check.
cargo clippy --all-targets -- -D warnings for convex-ports, convex-engine, convex-server, convex-ext-redb and convex-ext-file.
RUSTDOCFLAGS=-Dwarnings cargo doc --no-deps --all-features for convex-ports and convex-engine.
cargo test -p convex-ports: 43 passed.
cargo test -p convex-engine: 209 passed, 1 ignored.
cargo test -p convex-ext-redb -p convex-ext-file -p convex-server -- --test-threads=1: 357 passed (two new tests).
tools/assurance/check.py, alone and with --base 79b43011: passed.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Behavior Changes
Pricing now loads curves only when a product needs them, so stale curves that a product does not use no longer prevent its quote.
In batch pricing, a bond that cannot be priced fails individually while other bonds continue.
Batch responses list each curve read once, and each product’s snapshot includes only the curves it uses.
Bonds without coverage continue to return 422 NOT_COVERED before curve reads.

Walkthrough
Request contexts now read and cache curves when product paths first need them. Pricing handlers await those reads, and successful reads supply the curve pins reported by single and batch pricing.
Changes: Request-time curve resolution

Summary
Context cache and valuation crates/convex-engine/src/lib.rs, crates/convex-engine/src/request_valuation.rs, crates/convex-engine/src/curve_resolution.rs, crates/convex-engine/benches/runtime_benchmarks.rs
RequestContext stores the cutoff and curve store, then resolves curve sets asynchronously on first use. It caches successful and failed results, limits each context to three distinct sets, and returns deduplicated pins from successful reads. Request valuation reads curves through the context and rejects a mismatched cutoff. The benchmark awaits context creation and curve resolution.

Summary
Single and batch pricing paths crates/convex-server/src/handlers.rs, crates/convex-server/tests/request_time_products.rs, crates/convex-engine/tests/support/configuration_setup.rs, crates/convex-ports/src/error.rs
Pricing handlers use mutable contexts and await curve reads. Tests cover stale swap curves, product-specific curve use, and deduplicated batch curve listings. TraitError now derives Clone.
Pricing behavior and metric descriptions crates/convex-server/README.md, crates/convex-engine/src/telemetry.rs, crates/convex-engine/src/lib.rs
The documentation describes product-specific curve reads, per-bond batch failures, and batch curve listings. The request-context metric description now covers the activation read; curve reads and builds are described separately.
A batch can price products using inconsistent curve revisions. Preserve revision consistency before merging unless this risk is explicitly accepted.

Explanation
The title names the main change: each request-time product reads only the curves it uses, and it reads them once per context. The changeset matches this. The raw summary shows request-context curve resolution moved to first use, caching in RequestContext, and per-product curve reads in handlers and valuation. The title also cites the tracking IDs G33 and D69, which add reference context but do not hide the change.

Keep shared curve revisions consistent across a request context.
read reuses a result only when the entire root set matches. If a batch reads a bullet’s [discount, swap] set and a newer discount revision becomes eligible at the same known_at before a callable reads [discount], the two items can price with different discount revisions. pins() then reports both versions under one request context. The curve store permits a new revision recorded before the cutoff, and each recipe_at call selects the latest eligible revision independently. Preserve the first selected revision of each curve across subsequent sets, including dependencies, or give the context a stable store snapshot. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
