A small dashboard for watching crypto prices move: a scrolling live ticker tape, a searchable coin detail view, and historical price charts across 24h/7d/30d/90d.
Built to practice working with a live REST API, async JavaScript, and data visualization — no framework, no build step, just HTML/CSS/JS + Chart.js.

(replace with an actual screenshot once you run it)
- Live ticker tape — scrolling strip of prices for 8 major coins, refreshed every minute
- Coin detail panel — price, 24h change, market cap, volume, 24h high/low
- Interactive price chart — switch between 24h / 7d / 30d / 90d ranges
- Favorites — star any coin to pin it as a quick-access chip, saved in
localStorageso it survives a refresh - No API key required — uses CoinGecko's free public API
- Responsive — works down to mobile width
- Respects reduced-motion preferences (the ticker scroll pauses/stops)
- Vanilla HTML/CSS/JavaScript (no build tools)
- Chart.js for the price chart
- CoinGecko API for market data
This is a static site, so you just need to serve the folder — opening
index.html directly can hit CORS issues with some browsers.
git clone https://github.com/<your-username>/crypto-tracker.git
cd crypto-tracker
python3 -m http.server 8000
# then open http://localhost:8000- Push this repo to GitHub.
- Go to Settings → Pages.
- Under "Build and deployment", set source to Deploy from a branch,
branch
main, folder/ (root). - Your site will be live at
https://<your-username>.github.io/crypto-tracker/.
- Add a search box instead of a fixed dropdown (CoinGecko supports 10,000+ coins), so favorites aren't limited to the built-in watchlist
- Add price alerts (e.g. browser notification when a coin crosses a threshold)
- Cache chart data more aggressively to stay well under CoinGecko's rate limits
CoinGecko's public API is rate-limited (roughly 10–30 calls/minute depending on load). This app caches responses for 60 seconds client-side to stay well within that limit. If you see a "rate limited" message, just wait a few seconds.
Not financial advice — just a ticker. "# -crypto-tracker"
