fix(appearance): observe committed Mission Control activity - #1425
The Mission Control probe publishes activity before its stored value changes. The overlay listener discards the emitted value and rereads that property, so it can leave the shape visible on entry and hide. iton exit.
Deliver probe activity notifications on the main queue after the assignment. Visibility and polling then read committed state together. Keep the probe responsible for notification timing, add an injectable probe for overlay regression tests, and update the changelog. Scope: one appearance bug; no new responsibilities for the large managers.
Yes - if yes, please describe the impact and migration path
No
What is the new behavior?
The overlay hides for active Mission Control, continues polling while hidden so it can detect exit, and restores its prior visibility afterward. Tests cover repeated transitions, committed-state reads, and cancelling queued callbacks. The existing beta 4 detector fix remains in place; this addresses the listener timing that follows detection.
PR Checklist
I have built and run the app locally and verified that it works as expected. App launch was checked; live visual verification is incomplete, as detailed below.
I have run swiftformat . and strict lint for this branch.
I have run the smallest relevant test commands, listed below.
I have added regression tests for the new behavior.
I have noted the tested macOS version.
I have documented the non-obvious notification timing.
I have updated documentation as needed (changelog).
This PR targets development (Thaw 3).
I did not add responsibilities to the large types listed in AGENTS.md.
New code has at least 80% test coverage and the SonarCloud scan reports no new issues. Fork PRs skip the scan; local coverage is reported below.
If dependencies or lockfiles changed, dependency-sca is green or suppressions have a reason and expiry. No dependencies changed.
Test commands run on macOS 27.2, Xcode 27.1, arm64, with DEVELOPER_DIR=/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer:
TEST_RUNNER_XCODE_RUNNING_FOR_PREVIEWS=1 xcodebuild test-without-building -xctestrun /private/tmp/thaw-missing-profile-build/Build/Products/UpdateHooksIsolated.xctestrun -destination "platform=macOS,arch=arm64" -parallel-testing-enabled NO -only-testing:ThawTests/MissionControlActivityObservationTests -only-testing:ThawTests/MissionControlProbeTests -only-testing:ThawTests/MissionControlProbeBackoffTests -only-testing:ThawTests/MissionControlShieldProbeTests -only-testing:ThawTests/OverlayBarHeightTests -only-testing:ThawTests/OverlayLevelTests -only-testing:ThawTests/OverlaySpaceLookupTests -resultBundlePath /private/tmp/thaw-outline-results.xcresult passed: 22 tests in 7 suites. The copied test configuration disables normal app startup; the overlay test uses scratch settings and never shows its panel.
The observation regressions failed before scheduling was added: four stale-state assertions failed across repeated entry/exit transitions, and cancellation checks failed.
xcrun xccov view --report --json /private/tmp/thaw-outline-results.xcresult reports 5/5 lines for activityChanges and 21/21 lines for observeMenuBarVisibility (100% each). The changed initializer has 34/34 executable lines covered.
swiftformat . completed; unrelated baseline formatting changes were restored. sh scripts/lint.sh --strict --no-cache passed with zero violations. The new test file passes SwiftFormat lint. git diff --check passed.
Known limitations / follow-ups
The rebuilt app was launched and a rounded Full shape enabled, but the native automation captures individual windows and did not provide reliable full-desktop evidence. Live visual checks of Mission Control, App Expose, desktop reveal and Space switching remain unverified. The automated test drives activity through the real overlay listener and checks alpha and polling eligibility; it does not reproduce the system animation.
Other information
AI-assisted change reviewed against the existing probe, visibility and teardown flow. No external code copied or dependencies changed. The commit is signed and signed off.

Bug Fixes
The menu bar shape now hides when Mission Control opens and reappears when it closes.
Its visibility stays in sync across repeated Mission Control transitions, including when activity changes occur in quick succession, so it does not remain visible or hidden after the transition ends.

Walkthrough
The Mission Control probe now publishes activity changes on the main queue. The menu bar overlay accepts an optional probe and observes its activity stream. Tests cover overlay alpha, polling behavior, event delivery, and cancellation.
The probe exposes polling state and publishes activity changes on the main queue. Tests check initial and repeated activity notifications, and verify that cancelled observers receive no callbacks.
The overlay accepts an optional probe and observes its activity stream. Tests check alpha changes and polling state. The changelog describes the menu bar shape hiding during Mission Control and returning when it closes.
Issue 1406 reports the menu bar outline remaining active in Mission Control. This change updates the overlay’s Mission Control activity observation.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #1406 requires the menu bar overlay to hide during active Mission Control and to restore after exit, with a fix that works after Thaw is enabled. At the reviewed head, MissionControlShieldProbe.activityChanges (MenuBarOverlayProbe.swift) maps $isActive through receive(on: DispatchQueue.main). Listeners therefore run after the stored value changes. MenuBarOverlayPanel.observeMenuBarVisibility now subscribes to activityChanges instead of $isActive, so each update reads committed state. MissionControlShieldProbe.isPolling reports whether the poll subscription exists. The overlay therefore keeps polling while hidden to detect exit. MissionControlActivityObservationTests covers repeated entry and exit transitions, alpha changes, polling eligibility, and cancellation of queued and later callbacks. The automated evidence supports the required behavior. Live visual confirmation in Mission Control was not performed, as the PR description states.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
All changed code supports #1406. The changes are: the main-queue activity publisher in MenuBarOverlayProbe.swift; the observation switch and the optional missionControlProbe initializer parameter in MenuBarOverlayPanel.swift, which supports injection for tests and defaults to the existing behavior; the isPolling accessor used by the tests; the new regression test file; and the Unreleased changelog entry. The diff shows no dependency, unrelated product behavior, or new large-manager responsibility changes. The initializer parameter defaults to the prior probe construction, so production behavior is unchanged.

Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 3 files.

The sink discards the Bool emitted by activityChanges and yields probe.isActive instead. A regression that emits the wrong value can therefore pass while probe.isActive remains correct.

Assert the live polling subscription, not a detached predicate.
The test replaces probe.shouldRun with { false }, then calls the previously captured closure. A regression that cancels MissionControlShieldProbe.cancellable while isActive is true would still pass.
Expose a test-readable isPolling state and assert it after each transition. This keeps the timer from changing injected activity while detecting whether the subscription remains active.

Area
Does this PR introduce a breaking change?
What is the new behavior?
The overlay hides for active Mission Control, continues polling while hidden so it can detect exit, and restores its prior visibility afterward. Tests cover repeated transitions, committed-state reads, and cancelling queued callbacks. The existing beta 4 detector fix remains in place; this addresses the listener timing that follows detection.
