RPG Save Editor – RPG Maker (MV, MZ, VX Ace, VX, XP, 2000/2003), Ren'Py, Twine/SugarCube and Wolf RPG Editor save editor

Latest release Downloads License

RPG Save Editor is a free, open-source desktop app for editing RPG Maker, Ren'Py, HTML game (Twine/SugarCube) and Wolf RPG Editor save files: change gold, items, weapons, armors, party stats, switches and variables, or any other value in the save. Unlike online save editors, nothing is uploaded: it works offline on your PC, keeps your save intact, and supports every modern RPG Maker engine, Ren'Py visual novels, HTML games made with Twine/SugarCube and Wolf RPG Editor games:

Engine Save files
RPG Maker MZ file1.rmmzsave, file2.rmmzsave, …
RPG Maker MV file1.rpgsave, file2.rpgsave, …
RPG Maker VX Ace Save01.rvdata2, …
RPG Maker VX Save1.rvdata, …
RPG Maker XP Save1.rxdata, …
RPG Maker 2000/2003 Save01.lsd, …
Ren'Py 7 and 8 1-1-LT1.save, auto-1-LT1.save, quick-1-LT1.save, …
HTML games (Twine/SugarCube 2) <game name>-<date>.save, from the game's Saves → Save to Disk
Wolf RPG Editor (up to 3.279) SaveData01.sav, SaveData02.sav, …
JSON saves, Unity Easy Save, Naninovel save.json, slot1.json… from games written in JavaScript; SaveFile.es3 from Unity games (password-protected ones too); Naninovel GameSave001, GameQuickSave001, GameAutoSave001, GlobalSave as .json or .nson; a plain-JSON save under a game's own extension opens too, by its content

Common uses: give yourself max gold or money, 99 of every item, max level and stats, skip a grind by turning on a story switch, or change affection points and flags in a visual novel.

RPG Save Editor: editing item quantities in an RPG Maker MZ save, with old-save and gap columns

Advanced tab in dark mode: searching every value in the save by item name

Features

  • Party: gold, HP, MP, TP, level, EXP and bonus stats (ATK, DEF, MAT, MDF, AGI, LUK) of every character.
  • Items, weapons and armors: change how many of each you own, with names read from the game's database.
  • Switches and variables: turn switches on/off and change variables, with their names from the game.
  • Ren'Py variables: every game variable (affection points, flags, money, names…) by name, with its type kept.
  • JSON saves, Unity Easy Save and Naninovel: any plain .json save, Unity's Easy Save .es3 saves (gzip-compressed and password-protected ones too), and Naninovel .json / .nson saves. Values are on the Variables page by name and the whole file is in Advanced, including JSON kept inside strings. An edit changes only that value in the file: indentation, 1.0 and everything else stay as they were.
  • HTML game (Twine/SugarCube) variables: every story variable ($money, $player.hp…) by name, including values stored in objects, Maps and story classes.
  • Wolf RPG Editor variables: the game's variables by number (money, flags, counters…), and every other value in Advanced. Saves don't store variable names, so compare two saves to find a value.
  • Advanced tab: browse every value in the save as a tree and edit numbers, text and true/false values. Useful for games whose plugins or scripts keep data in their own places.
  • Powerful search: exact text, regular expressions, number comparisons (>1000, 100..200) and paths (party.@gold, actors.**.@hp). See the ? button in the Advanced tab.
  • Find unknown values by comparing saves: open a save, play, open the next save, then search for values that changed, increased or decreased, and refine the results with each new save.
  • Compare saves: "Old" and "Gap" columns show how values changed since the previous save of the same game.
  • Safe for your saves: XP/VX/VX Ace and Ren'Py saves are rewritten losslessly (everything you don't edit is kept byte-for-byte), values are kept in the right type, and unsaved changes are never lost by accident.
  • Reads game data automatically: item, switch and variable names come from the game's data/Data folder, including encrypted archives (Game.rgssad, Game.rgss2a, Game.rgss3a).
  • Drag & drop a save onto the window, keyboard shortcuts, light and dark themes, and automatic updates.

Download and install

  1. Download rpgsaveeditor_x.y.z_x64-setup.exe from the latest release.
  2. Run it to install. Windows SmartScreen may warn about an unknown publisher because the app isn't code-signed: click More info → Run anyway.
  3. The app checks for updates when it starts (you can turn this off in About) and updates itself in one click.

Requires Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit). To uninstall, open Settings → Apps → Installed apps, find rpgsaveeditor and click Uninstall. Your save files are not touched.

Where are the save files located?

Engine Save folder Files
RPG Maker MZ save/ in the game's folder file1.rmmzsave, global.rmmzsave, …
RPG Maker MV www/save/ in the game's folder file1.rpgsave, global.rpgsave, …
RPG Maker XP, VX, VX Ace the game's main folder, next to Game.exe Save01.rvdata2, Save1.rvdata, Save1.rxdata
RPG Maker 2000/2003 the game's main folder, next to RPG_RT.exe Save01.lsd, Save02.lsd, …
Ren'Py game/saves/ in the game's folder, and %APPDATA%\RenPy\<game name> 1-1-LT1.save, auto-1-LT1.save, …
HTML games (Twine/SugarCube) kept inside the browser or game window; export one with Saves → Save to Disk (usually to Downloads) <game name>-<date>.save
Wolf RPG Editor Save/ in the game's folder SaveData01.sav, SaveData02.sav, …
JSON saves, Unity Easy Save, Naninovel the game's folder or %APPDATA%; Unity games: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\<studio>\<game>; Naninovel slots are in its Saves subfolder save.json, SaveFile.es3, GameSave001.json, GameSave001.nson, GameQuickSave001.nson, GameAutoSave001.nson, GlobalSave.nson, …

Open the slot you saved in: file3 / Save03 is the third save slot. global and persistent files hold settings shared by all slots, not your progress.

How to edit an RPG Maker save (MV, MZ, VX Ace, VX, XP, 2000/2003)

  1. Back up your save file first.
  2. Open RPG Save Editor and click the file icon (or press Ctrl+O, or drag the save onto the window).
  3. Edit values in Party (gold, HP, level, stats), Items, Weapons, Armors, Switches, Variables or Advanced. Changed values are highlighted.
  4. Press Ctrl+S to save, then load the save in the game. Ctrl+R reloads the file from disk.

In RPG Maker 2000/2003, weapons and armor are items, and item, switch and variable names show as numbers for now (the names are in RPG_RT.ldb, which isn't read yet). The Items page lists the items you already have.

How to edit a Ren'Py save

  1. Back up your save file first.
  2. Open the .save file in RPG Save Editor.
  3. Change variables (money, affection points, flags, names…) in Variables, or any other value in Advanced.
  4. Press Ctrl+S to save, then load the save in the game.

Ren'Py 8.1 and newer sign their saves, so when you load an edited save the game asks whether you trust it; answer Yes. Ren'Py keeps a copy of each save in both folders above and loads the newest, so editing either copy works. Loading rolls the game back to the start of the line it was saved on; the editor updates the values Ren'Py restores there too, so your edits stay.

How to edit an HTML game save (Twine/SugarCube)

Many text-based story games are made with Twine and its SugarCube story format. You play them in a web browser or by opening an .html file (sometimes wrapped in an .exe), and their menu has a Saves button with Save to Disk and Load from Disk.

  1. In the game, open Saves and click Save to Disk. This downloads a .save file (a backup too).
  2. Open that file in RPG Save Editor.
  3. Change story variables ($money, $player.hp, flags…) in Variables, or any other value in Advanced.
  4. Press Ctrl+S to save, then in the game open Saves → Load from Disk and pick the file.

The edits apply to the passage the save was made on. Going back in the game's history shows the earlier, unedited values.

How to edit a Wolf RPG Editor save

  1. Back up your save file first.
  2. Save twice in the game with a known change in between (for example, buy something), into two slots.
  3. Open the older save, then the newer one. On Variables, turn on Different from old save: the money, items or counters that changed show up with their old value and the difference.
  4. Change the value, press Ctrl+S and load the save in the game.

Only numbers can be edited; text and the save's structure are kept as they are.

How to edit a JSON save

Some games written in JavaScript (run in the browser, or packed as an .exe with NW.js or Electron) keep their save as a plain .json file, usually in the game's folder or in %APPDATA%, or exported from a Save button.

  1. Back up the file first.
  2. Open the .json file in RPG Save Editor.
  3. Change the values on Variables (top-level values such as day or money, and the fields of the objects under them), or anything else in Advanced.
  4. Press Ctrl+S and load the save in the game.

Only the values you change are written: the file is edited in place, so indentation, key order, 1.0 and numbers too large for a double stay exactly as they were.

Unity games that use Easy Save keep .es3 files, which are JSON too. If the game turned on Easy Save's encryption, the app tries the usual passwords and the names in the file's path by itself. If the save sits inside the game's own folder (some games, especially cracked ones, do this instead of the usual per-user folder), it also looks there for the password on its own, without asking which folder; "Search more thoroughly…" tries harder in the same folder if that quick pass doesn't find it. Otherwise it asks for the password (remembered afterwards, and "Find in game files…" looks for it in a folder you pick). The save is encrypted again when written. Compression is handled.

Some Unity games roll their own encryption instead of Easy Save's: a fixed key written into the game's own code (not a password a player enters), often AES in ECB mode with the save written out as Base64 text. The app recognises this shape too and looks for the key the same way it looks for an Easy Save password — by reading the game's files, not by guessing a player-chosen password.

Games made with Naninovel (a visual novel engine for Unity) save GameSave001.json, or .nson when they compress it. Their state is JSON inside strings; the app opens those strings, so the story's own variables (affection, flags, counters) and the game's values (money, day, action points…) are listed by name on Variables. Save twice with a change in between, then use Different from old save to find a value.

Support the project

RPG Save Editor is built in my spare time. If it saved you some grinding, consider buying me a coffee:

Bug reports and feature requests are welcome in Issues.

Development

Built with Tauri 2 (Rust) and React + TypeScript, styled with styled-components.

Prerequisites

Commands

git clone https://github.com/truongthang2211/RPGSaveEditor.git
cd RPGSaveEditor
npm install

npm run tauri dev # run the app with hot reload
npm test # run the tests
npm run tauri build # build the installer (src-tauri/target/release/bundle)

Save formats live in src/formats/ (one folder per engine, plus a lossless Ruby Marshal reader/writer in src/formats/marshal/).

Troubleshooting

  • Rust errors: run rustup update stable; if the build still fails, run cargo clean in src-tauri/.
  • Port 1420 in use: the dev server needs port 1420; close the other process using it.

Contributing

Pull requests are welcome. Please run npm test and npm run build before opening one, and describe how you tested the change (ideally with a real save from the engine you touched).

Code signing policy

Free code signing provided by SignPath.io, certificate by SignPath Foundation. Releases up to 1.5.0 are not signed.

Windows installers are built from this repository by the release workflow on GitHub Actions. Every release is approved by hand before it is signed.

Privacy policy

RPG Save Editor works offline and does not collect or send any information about you or your saves. Your save files and game data are only read and written on your computer.

The only network connection it makes on its own is the update check: when the app starts (and when you click Check for Updates), it downloads the update information from GitHub Pages (truongthang2211.github.io) and, if you choose to install an update, the installer from GitHub. GitHub may log these requests like any website visit; see the GitHub Privacy Statement. You can turn off the automatic check in About → Check for updates when the app starts. Links in the app (GitHub, donation pages) open in your browser only when you click them.
