Daily devotionals could stretch census lines into themes the text does not support. This adds a narrow pre-generation passage filter and a scored AI quality check, with up to three attempts using fresh verses on the same writing track.

Each failed judgment is audited before the next model call. Retry errors and the shared 120-second model-call deadline retain completed drafts. A fallback must have no hard failures and every criterion above 2; otherwise the function returns 503 and preserves existing content. Judge outages retain the documented fail-open behavior and store the error.

Multi-verse retries now exclude both previously tried anchors and companions. The empathy and narrative writers share corrected examples with their positive eval fixtures. Narrative instructions now restrict scene detail to the passage instead of asking for invented sensory detail; the former empathy example remains a negative control. Published judge metadata records the run, scores, attempts, exhaustion and any retry error. Rejections are service-role-only and linked by run ID.

The production workflow applies migrations before deploying functions, and CI now type-checks the request handler as well as testing it.

Validation:

  • 80 Deno tests plus 8 handler substeps pass, including injected model outages, immediate audit persistence, unsafe fallback rejection, duplicate verse prevention, holidays and authorization/cache behavior.
  • Live judge evaluation: 11 cases × 3 trials, all 33 expected decisions correct. The original Numbers 26:58 devotional fails all three trials.
  • 62 parser tests pass; request-handler type-check, changed-module lint and diff checks pass.
  • Migration applied twice to isolated PostgreSQL: schema, RLS, denied app-role table access and service-role writes verified.
  • Function startup and authorization verified in the native Supabase Edge Runtime, including user-worker dispatch.
  • All nine live writing-track exercises produced a passing draft, with narrative rerun after its prompt fix. These used real models and intercepted database writes; observed final-path durations were 16.9–40.6 seconds.

No new function is introduced. Merging to master triggers the existing production deployment workflow; no manual function deployment or migration push is needed.

Every generated draft is now graded before it is saved. A judge model
scores it 1-5 on verse_weight, faithfulness, substance, track_fit and
craft, plus hard-fail flags (misquoted scripture, factual/theological
error, a verse that cannot carry a devotional, broken format). Pass is
decided in code: weighted overall >= 7.0/10, no criterion <= 2, no hard
fails.

A failed draft is never published. It is written to the new
daily_devotional_rejections table (RLS on, service role only) and the
function regenerates on the same track, type and testament from a
different verse, up to 3 drafts. If all fail, the best is published with
judge.exhausted=true and a Sentry error; if the judge itself is down, the
draft is published unjudged (fail open). The published row records its
judge result in the new "Daily Devotional".judge column.

Logic lives in _shared/devotional-judge.ts so it is testable.
judge_test.ts covers the parser, pass rule, retry loop (stubbed) and
wiring in CI; judge_eval_test.ts is an opt-in live eval over labelled
cases in evals/judge_cases.ts, seeded with the 2026-10-11 Numbers 26:58
lament that prompted this. Run with `make eval-devotional-judge`.

A cheap pre-generation layer in front of the judge. Verse selection now
drops four narrow passage shapes that cannot carry a devotional: clan
lists ("the family of the …ites" x2, e.g. Numbers 26:58), begat chains,
wilderness itineraries ("departed from X, and pitched in Y") and
tabernacle/temple measurements. Measured against the whole pool: ~177 of
~24,000 paragraphs, all OT except Acts 7:8.

A broader proper-name-density rule was tried and rejected; it removed
John 19:19, Mark 15:47, Matthew 10:2 and (via "talents") Matthew 25:20.
Tests pin both directions plus a <1% cap so the rules stay narrow.

Walkthrough

The daily devotional flow filters passage selections and judges generated drafts. It retries failed drafts, records rejected judgments, and stores judge results with published devotionals. The change also adds evaluation tooling, tests, database support, and migration-before-function deployment ordering.

Changes

Daily devotional quality gate

Layer / File(s) Summary
Filter unsuitable passages
supabase/functions/_shared/verse-selection.ts, supabase/functions/daily-devotional/index.ts, supabase/functions/daily-devotional/verse_selection_test.ts
Verse selection excludes configured passage shapes and supports excluding references used by earlier candidates. Tests check excluded passages, retained passages, and the scope of the rules.
Judge and retry devotional drafts
supabase/functions/_shared/devotional-judge.ts, supabase/functions/daily-devotional/index.ts, supabase/migrations/20261011120000_add_devotional_judge.sql
The judge builds prompts, scores responses, and determines pass status. Generation retries failed drafts, records rejected judgments, and stores judge metadata with published devotionals. The migration adds a judge column and a restricted rejection table.
Validate and operate the quality gate
supabase/functions/_shared/devotional-examples.ts, supabase/functions/daily-devotional/evals/judge_cases.ts, supabase/functions/daily-devotional/*_test.ts, supabase/functions/daily-devotional/README.md, Makefile, .github/workflows/ci.yml, supabase/functions/_shared/sentry.ts
Fixtures and tests cover judge parsing, retry and recovery behavior, handler scenarios, and live evaluations. The README and Make targets document and run the checks. CI type-checks the handler, and Sentry requests have a five-second timeout.

Supabase deployment ordering

Layer / File(s) Summary
Run migrations before function deployment
.github/workflows/deploy-supabase-functions.yml, .github/workflows/deploy-supabase-migrations.yml
The function deployment workflow runs migrations first and serializes production runs. The migrations workflow supports reusable invocation instead of automatic push invocation.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 9ad9f

A manually dispatched migration can run at the same time as a production functions deployment. Add a concurrency group to the migrations workflow before merging, or accept the risk given the policy against manual migrations.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Serialize manually dispatched migrations with production deployments.

The supabase-production group protects this workflow, but a direct workflow_dispatch run of .github/workflows/deploy-supabase-migrations.yml does not join it. An operator can start a migration while this workflow deploys functions. Put direct migration runs in the same group, but use a different group for workflow_call runs so the called job does not wait on its own caller. (docs.github.com)
