test_extra_positional_to_a_keyword_only_callee_is_too_many is red on every
platform across three pr-split stacks (#2044, #2057, #2062, #2074 and the
layers above them). They inherit it from this branch; none of those PRs
touches arity code.

Cause

_is_variadic is the sole suppressor of a DELTA_ARITY_TOO_MANY verdict,
and _arity_verdict consults it in exactly one place: the branch where a
call site passes more positional arguments than the callee declares.

e5d3bf09 rewrote the header check to parse rather than scan — correct in
itself — but widened the answer to vararg is not None or kwonlyargs.
Keyword-only parameters absorb nothing:

>>> def helper(a, *, b=1): pass
>>> helper(1, 2, b=3)
TypeError: helper() takes 1 positional argument but 2 positional arguments
           (and 1 keyword-only argument) were given

So def helper(a, *, b=1) suppressed a verdict for a call that raises at
runtime. Only *args belongs in that branch.

The test agreed with the bug

The oracle in test_variadic_header_detection.py read

return fn.args.vararg is not None or bool(fn.args.kwonlyargs)

which is the expression under test, so test_it_agrees_with_python[bare-star-keyword-only]
compared the implementation against a restatement of itself and passed. It
now decides by calling the function with one surplus positional, so it
cannot agree with a broken implementation. Replaying the old expression
against the new oracle reddens exactly the two keyword-only headers.

Changes

  • vararg is not None alone suppresses; kwonlyargs no longer does.
  • Renamed to _header_absorbs_extra_positionals / _absorbs_extra_positionals
    after the question actually asked.
  • New oracle plus test_keyword_only_params_do_not_absorb_an_extra_positional,
    and a bare-star-defaulted-keyword-only case.
  • Dropped the _VARIADIC regex the parser replaced, and its now-unused
    import re.

Verification

16 passed by name, including the previously failing
test_extra_positional_to_a_keyword_only_callee_is_too_many; 58 passed
across both files. The helper now matches CPython on all 11 header shapes
tested; the old one was wrong on 2. *args suppression is unchanged,
including def f(a, *rest, k=1).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Corrected argument validation so only functions accepting variable positional arguments (*args) allow surplus positional inputs.
    • Keyword-only parameters no longer incorrectly absorb extra positional arguments.
    • Improved validation for multiline parameter declarations and defaults containing nested calls or parentheses.
    • Improved handling of malformed or unparseable parameter declarations during validation.

`_is_variadic` is the sole suppressor of a TOO_MANY arity verdict, and
it is consulted only in the branch where a site passes more POSITIONAL
arguments than the callee declares. Counting `kwonlyargs` as variadic
suppressed that verdict for `def helper(a, *, b=1)`, which absorbs
nothing: CPython rejects `helper(1, 2, b=3)` with "takes 1 positional
argument but 2 positional arguments ... were given".

`test_extra_positional_to_a_keyword_only_callee_is_too_many` caught it,
reddening every layer of the 1548/1549/1550 stacks on all platforms.

The test's own oracle read `vararg is not None or kwonlyargs` -- the
exact expression under test -- so the keyword-only case compared the bug
against itself and passed. It now decides by CALLING the function with
one surplus positional, so it cannot agree with a buggy implementation.

Renamed to `_header_absorbs_extra_positionals` / `_absorbs_extra_positionals`
after the question actually asked, and dropped the regex the parser
replaced along with its now-unused `re` import.
Review P2: the module docstring and one test name still said
`_is_variadic`, which no longer exists, and the wrapper docstring still
said "variadic" for what is specifically absorbing extra positionals.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The arity helpers now recognize only *args as absorbing surplus positional arguments. Bracket-aware scanning preserves *args after nested defaults. Tests compare results with Python call behavior and cover malformed and multiline headers.

What changed in this PR

This PR fixes arity analysis for Python call sites by ensuring that only *args (not keyword-only parameters) suppresses “too many positional arguments” verdicts, aligning structural-delta behavior with CPython and unblocking failing test stacks.

Changes:

  • Rename the internal helper to reflect its real purpose (_header_absorbs_extra_positionals / _absorbs_extra_positionals) and change the logic so only vararg suppresses surplus positional arity verdicts.
  • Strengthen the test oracle by executing headers and calling the function with a surplus positional to match CPython runtime behavior, and add explicit regression coverage for keyword-only headers.
  • Remove the now-unused regex-based variadic detection and its re import.
File Description
codebase_rag/structural_delta.py Updates suppression logic for “too many positional args” to depend solely on *args, and renames helpers accordingly.
codebase_rag/tests/test_variadic_header_detection.py Reworks the oracle to validate behavior via actual runtime calls and adds regression tests for keyword-only headers.

Copilot's finding is correct and is now fixed.

The claim: _absorbs_extra_positionals truncates a multi-line signature at a
) inside a default. Verified against the real function rather than by
reading it — the read-back loop stopped at the first line containing ), so

def f(
    a=g(),
    *rest,
):

cut after a=g(),. That fragment does not parse, the helper answers False,
and a genuine *rest callee is reported as receiving too many arguments.

It is pre-existing rather than introduced here — my diff never touched the
loop — but it falsifies a claim the base branch makes in this very
function's docstring: "a real *rest can follow a default that itself
contains a ) -- which the old first-) cut discarded". e5d3bf09 fixed
the parsing with ast; the truncation happens before the parser ever sees
the text, so the stated defect survived the fix meant to remove it. Leaving
it would keep a documented-as-fixed bug live in the function this PR is
about.

The loop now stops where the parameter list actually closes, by counting
brackets, so a ) inside a default no longer ends the header. An unbalanced
count simply reads on to end_line, which is the safe direction.

test_the_header_cut_follows_the_brackets pins it. Reverting the cut to
if ")" in line: reddens that test, so it discriminates rather than
restating the implementation.

Copilot's finding on this PR, verified: the read-back loop stopped at the
first line containing `)`, so

    def f(
        a=g(),
        *rest,
    ):

was cut after `a=g(),`. That fragment does not parse, the helper answers
False, and a genuine `*rest` callee is reported as receiving too many
arguments.

Pre-existing rather than introduced here -- the loop is untouched by this
PR -- but it falsifies a claim the function's own docstring makes: "a real
`*rest` can follow a default that itself contains a `)` -- which the old
first-`)` cut discarded". e5d3bf0 fixed the PARSING with ast; the
truncation happens before the parser sees the text, so the defect survived
the fix meant to remove it.

The loop now stops where brackets balance. An unbalanced count reads on to
`end_line`, the safe direction.

test_a_multiline_header_is_not_cut_at_a_paren_in_a_default drives
`_absorbs_extra_positionals` against a real file, not the string helper:
the truncation lives in the line loop, and a test of the helper alone
stayed green with the loop broken. Reverting the cut to `if ")" in line`
reddens it.

The header cut counted raw characters, so a bracket inside a string or
comment (a=")", # )) ended the parameter list early and dropped a *rest
that followed; it also re-joined and rescanned the header per line. One
tokenize pass now finds the closing row, ignoring strings and comments.

A one-line definition (def f(a, *rest): return a) already carries its
suite, and the appended stand-in pass made it unparseable; the bare
header is now parsed first and pass is added only when it is needed.

Closing as superseded: this is part of the split of #1550, which was closed without merging, and it targets the stale feat/move-op branch rather than main. The branch is kept, so the extract/inline work can be rebased onto main if it's picked up again.
