Summary

  • Root cause.
    • import { plus } from "../lib" maps plus to lib.plus. That names the barrel lib/index.ts, where nothing is registered. The direct-import probe stopped there, so the call fell through to the name-only trie. The trie finds no plus or times anywhere, so those calls got no edge. It does find add, formatPrice and mul by name, so those calls got only a heuristic edge.
    • export * from "./add" never reached the import map. _parse_js_reexport compared each child with Java's named asterisk node, but the JS/TS grammars spell * as an anonymous token.
    • A module's own bindings exported under another name (export default mul, export { trim as strip }) were recorded nowhere.
  • Fix (indexer).
    • ImportProcessor now records export * from sources (TS_JS_STAR). A new js_export_bindings map is the module's export table: every export { … }, with or without a from, and every export default, each recorded as a JsExport(target, local).
    • The new parsers/js_ts/reexports.py follows <module>.<name> through barrels. A module part names lib.ts, or lib/index.ts when there is no lib.ts. At each barrel the walk follows only what the barrel exports: its export table, then each export * source, which never passes on default. A local export of an imported binding (import { pad }; export { pad as leftPad }) continues through that import. A private import never stands in for an export (review: Greptile). The walk recurses through barrels of barrels.
    • When two star sources export the same name, TypeScript exports neither, so nothing is guessed. A cycle of barrels ends.
    • CallResolver._try_resolve_js_reexport runs for JS/TS right after the direct-import probe. It resolves the end of the chain the way a direct import would, so the edge is exact. A chain that ends at an anonymous <module>.default also goes back through the direct-import probe, so fix(js-ts): resolve a call through an ES-module default import to the default export #2743's default-export record will resolve it once that PR lands.
    • An export * source now gets its IMPORTS edge. export * from "./add" inside math/index.ts stores the module math.add. The flush used to read that as the name add of the math barrel, which is the barrel itself. It now resolves an export * entry as the module, so the edge is math.index → math.add (review: CodeRabbit). A JS/TS self-import edge is still dropped, as a final check. fix(ts): resolve relative imports of and from dotted file names #2625 handles namespace imports and require.
  • Fix (rename, editing/rename.py). Now that these edges are exact, cgr rename no longer refuses them. A token that equals the definition's name is not always bound by that name, though.
    • A bare JS/TS call or reference in another file follows the rename only when its file imports the name under the definition's own name, because then the import is rewritten too.
    • Some files bind a name of their own and are left as they are: import mul from "./mul", const mul = require("./mul"), a barrel's export { default as Widget } from, and the modules that import that Widget.
    • A use whose import goes through a barrel's export * refuses even with --allow-heuristic, and the message names the barrel (review: CodeRabbit). The rename cannot rewrite that import. Any other bare use that no import of the definition's name binds is reported as heuristic.
    • This also fixes an existing bug on main. For a CommonJS module.exports = function mul file, the rename rewrote mul(2, 3) but left const mul = require(...) unchanged.
    • docs/architecture/rename.md describes the rule.

Demo

Calls through TS barrel re-exports binding the definition exactly, before and after

Rename through a named re-export without --allow-heuristic, before and after

Animated runs

Calls through TS barrel re-exports binding the definition exactly, before and after, animated

Rename through a named re-export without --allow-heuristic, before and after, animated

Two before/after runs. Each tree indexes the repo into a fresh Memgraph 3.3. The cgr commands are real.

  • barrel-calls: the issue's layout, with the CALLS edges out of run() read by column.
    • On main: add@9 and mul@65 are heuristic, and times@21 and plus@52 have no edge.
    • On this branch: all five calls bind exactly. times and mul go to math.mul.mul, and add, math.add and plus go to math.add.add.
  • barrel-rename: the issue comment's layout, where src/lib/index.ts holds export { formatPrice } from "./util".
    • On main: cgr graph callers shows src/app.ts:4:9 heuristic, and cgr rename … formatMoney --dry-run refuses with exit 1.
    • On this branch: every caller is exact, including the aliased fp(1). The dry run plans 8 sites without --allow-heuristic: the definition, 3 calls (one of them u.formatPrice) and 4 imports, one of them the barrel's export { … }.

Test Plan

  • Unit tests pass: the full suite was not run locally, because several agents share the machine. CI runs it on this push.
  • New tests added: codebase_rag/tests/test_ts_barrel_reexport_calls.py (36 tests)
  • Integration tests pass: integration/test_imports_e2e.py and integration/test_edits_undo_graph_e2e.py on a real Memgraph, 22 passed at 01ebc40
  • Manual testing: the two Memgraph runs in the demo above

The tests index each repo with the real GraphUpdater, into the in-memory graph from evals. The rename tests replay that graph through RecordedGraph.

Red. I wrote these first, then re-checked them after the commit with main's production files restored: 22 failed, 8 passed.

  • test_each_call_through_the_barrel_is_an_exact_call_to_the_definition:
    • [add-through-export-star]: ('…math.add.add', 'heuristic') == ('…math.add.add', 'exact').
    • [times-through-default-as] and [plus-through-named-alias]: None == (…, 'exact').
    • [mul-direct-default-import]: heuristic.
  • test_callers_of_the_default_export_include_its_barrel_alias: [65] == [21, 65].
  • test_the_barrel_maps_record_what_each_export_names: on main the map had no *…math.add entry.
  • test_a_named_reexport_binds_exactly[named-reexport]: heuristic. With [aliased-import-of-reexport] there was no edge.
  • test_a_chain_of_barrels_reaches_the_definition, 4 cases (alias of an alias over 3 barrels, a default renamed twice, a star of a star, an alias through a star): None or heuristic.
  • test_an_export_of_a_local_binding_reaches_the_definition, 4 cases (import-then-export { pad as leftPad }, export { trim as strip }, export default upper): {}, so no edges at all.
  • test_a_name_only_one_star_source_exports_still_binds (heuristic) and test_an_explicit_reexport_outranks_a_star (None).
  • test_a_rename_through_a_named_reexport_needs_no_allow_heuristic: RenameRefused: … 1 site(s) were resolved heuristically.
  • test_a_default_import_call_keeps_the_importers_own_name and test_a_default_reexported_under_its_own_name_keeps_its_importers: RenameRefused (heuristic). With the exact edges and no rename guard, the first rewrote mul(8, 9) to product(8, 9) under import mul from.
  • test_a_require_binding_keeps_the_importers_own_name: main rewrote mul(2, 3) and left const mul = require("./mul").

Negative. These must not change, and they pass before and after:

  • test_the_namespace_reexport_call_stays_exact (math.add(4, 5))
  • test_direct_imports_of_the_definition_stay_exact[direct-named-import|namespace-import-member]
  • test_two_star_sources_exporting_one_name_bind_neither_exactly
  • test_a_star_reexport_does_not_carry_the_default
  • test_a_cycle_of_stars_ends_without_an_edge
  • test_a_star_barrel_does_not_import_itself
  • test_the_barrels_own_call_keeps_its_private_import

Review follow-up (01ebc40). These tests failed at 8f9bfc2 (5 failed, 29 passed):

  • test_a_barrels_private_import_does_not_stand_in_for_its_export (Greptile): ('neg.src.a.dup', 'exact') == ('neg.src.d.dup', 'exact').
  • test_a_star_barrel_imports_the_module_it_reexports (CodeRabbit): the edge math.index → math.add was missing.
  • test_a_call_through_a_star_barrel_refuses_even_with_allow_heuristic[True|False] (CodeRabbit): with allow_heuristic it did not raise RenameRefused; without it, the message did not name src/lib/math/index.ts.
  • test_the_barrel_maps_record_what_each_export_names: the export table now holds every export.

Review follow-up (940aee5, Greptile, outside the diff). The case is b/index.ts: export { foo } from "../a" followed by c/index.ts: export * from "../b", with a consumer that does import { foo } from "./c".

  • At 01ebc40, --allow-heuristic applied the rename: the call changed, the consumer's import did not, and the import broke. _js_star_bound followed only export * hops.
  • It now also follows named re-export hops. A consumer reached through a chain that passes an export * refuses unconditionally, and the message names the first star barrel, the same as for a direct star. I chose refusal over rewriting the import through the star because it is the safer option.
  • Red: test_a_star_after_a_named_reexport_refuses_even_with_allow_heuristic did not raise at 01ebc40.
  • Negative: test_a_chain_of_named_reexports_renames_without_leave. A chain of named re-exports with no star still renames without leave, rewriting both re-exports and the consumer's import.

Targeted scope, run at 940aee5: 183 test files, 2186 passed and 5 skipped. They cover:

  • JS/TS, imports, re-exports and the call resolver;
  • rename, contract, edit transactions, patcher, import rewrite, undo and structural delta;
  • CommonJS/ESM and the JS dead-code roots;
  • every test_incremental_*, test_reingest* and test_graph_updater_* file;
  • the other files that call rename.
  • ruff check, ruff format and ty check pass.

Not in this PR:

  • An incremental sync that re-parses only a consumer. The unchanged barrel's import map is not in memory then, so the call falls back to the old heuristic edge. A full index, or a sync that re-parses the barrel, gives exact. fix(incremental): type receivers through unchanged re-exports and Rust return types #2805 restores those maps for Python and Rust. Its _module_holding would also need to try lib.index for a JS directory barrel.
  • Member calls through a namespace import of a barrel (import * as lib from "./lib"; lib.plus()) and export * as ns from bindings are unchanged. The issue's math.add row was already exact.
  • Renaming through an export * barrel refuses. Rewriting the consumers' imports through a star would need rename to walk through barrels.
  • TypeScript export = x is not handled.

Sonar follow-up (269f1a6)

Sonar's analysis of a8a6f0b flagged two S3776 issues, both in functions this PR added. Both are refactored with no change in behaviour:

  • rename._js_star_bound: complexity 21 → 9. The per-row decision moved into _js_star_following, which scores 7.
  • import_processor._record_js_export_bindings: complexity 19 → 9. The export-clause loop moved into _js_export_specifiers, which scores 10.

Two pinning tests cover the four branches that had no coverage before:

  • a default export with no local name;
  • a clause entry with no name;
  • an unmapped re-export;
  • the star walk's pathless-row and dedupe skips, run on a stub graph of nested export * barrels.

Both tests passed before and after the refactor. Removing any of those branches from the old code made one of them fail.

Results: 1075 passed and 1 skipped across 28 test files covering rename, JS/TS imports and exports, and generated docs. ruff and ty are clean.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 269f1

JS/TS calls through barrel re-exports now bind to their definitions. Rename refuses uses reached through an export-star barrel. No outstanding merge-blocking issue was found.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 269f1

Following exported names can affect which files a rename changes. The change adds safeguards for unsupported star-export renames and retains repository confinement. No introduced security issue was established, but recovery and lifecycle assurance remain incomplete.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected attack surface is repository-authored import/export syntax influencing graph identities and subsequent rename-site selection. The checked traversal manipulates mappings and identities rather than executing the analyzed source. The editing sink remains constrained by the supplied repository root.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new rename walks use project-scoped importer queries. Ownership filtering distinguishes longer registered project names when the project list is available, with a prefix fallback on lookup failure. File access rejects resolved paths outside the repository root, and identifier edits check the expected source token before staging.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Refusing identified unrewritable star-derived uses before staging protects against inconsistent renames caused by the newly resolved relationships. Existing transaction recovery covers ordinary exceptions, but does not establish crash-durable recovery from termination between file writes. That limitation is outside the rename diff and is not an established PR regression.

Re the outside-diff P2 from Greptile (#2833 (comment)): fixed in 940aee5.

  • _js_star_bound now follows named re-export hops as well as export * hops. In the case where b has export { foo } from "../a", c has export * from "../b" and the consumer has import { foo } from "./c", the walk now finds the consumer.
  • A rename now refuses that consumer's call even with --allow-heuristic, and the message names the first star barrel (src/c/index.ts). A direct star refuses the same way.
  • I chose refusal over rewriting the consumer's import through the star because it is the safer option.
  • Red: test_a_star_after_a_named_reexport_refuses_even_with_allow_heuristic.
  • Negative: test_a_chain_of_named_reexports_renames_without_leave. A chain of named re-exports with no star still renames without leave, and both re-exports and the consumer's import are rewritten.

SonarCloud Analysis failed on 940aee5 because the unit tests it runs went red: codebase_rag/tests/test_dart_getter_reads.py::test_a_reparse_drops_the_dart_prefix_state raised AttributeError: '_Probe' object has no attribute 'js_export_bindings'.

This PR caused it, because main and this PR each changed one side. The test, which comes from main, builds an ImportProcessor with object.__new__ (the class uses __slots__) and sets only the slots _clear_module_import_state reads. This PR adds a js_export_bindings slot, and that reset now clears it, so the probe had to set it too.

  • 1e5f6df merges main in. There were no textual conflicts.
  • a8a6f0b adds processor.js_export_bindings = {} to the probe. The test failed locally on the merged tree first, with the same AttributeError, and passes now.

Results: test_dart_getter_reads.py 44 passed. This PR's tests plus the import-processor and generated-docs tests: 88 passed. The barrel, re-export, rename and JS-export tests: 175 passed, 1 skipped. ruff and ty are clean.

@greptileai please review the latest commit (a8a6f0b).

PR Split Score / score failed on a8a6f0b with API rate limit exceeded for installation. The repository's Actions token was rate-limited (from 18:38Z), so the job stopped at an API call, not on anything in this PR.

I re-ran it once after the limit cleared.

Cleared the two open SonarCloud S3776 (cognitive complexity) issues on this PR in 269f1a6. Both functions were added by this PR, so the fix only extracts helpers from the PR's own code. Behaviour is unchanged.

1. codebase_rag/editing/rename.py _js_star_bound (21 -> 9)
The per-row decision moved into a new static helper, _js_star_following(row, name, barrel, bound) (complexity 7). It returns the first export * barrel on the chain once the walk passes row (empty while there is none), or None when the row does not pass the name on. It records a consumer reached past a barrel in bound, exactly as before. The walk keeps its stack, its (module, past-a-star) dedupe and its traversal order.

2. codebase_rag/parsers/import_processor.py _record_js_export_bindings (19 -> 9)
The nested clause/specifier loop moved into a module-level generator, _js_export_specifiers(statement) (complexity 10). It yields (local, exported) for each export { local as exported } specifier and skips anything without a name, such as a comment inside the braces. The default-export and re-export handling is unchanged.

Pinning tests (added to test_ts_barrel_reexport_calls.py before the refactor; they pass both before and after it)
Branch coverage showed four branches the existing tests never reached. All branches of both functions are now covered.

  • test_an_export_naming_no_binding_records_nothing covers an anonymous export default function () {}, export default base + 2, export { gone } from "" (no mapped target) and a comment inside an export { ... } clause.
  • test_the_star_walk_binds_each_consumer_to_its_first_star_barrel runs the star walk over a stub importer graph. It covers a diamond of star barrels (the dedupe), a pathless row, an unrelated name past a star, and a by-name import that is starred later. It pins both the returned map and the set of modules walked.
  • Mutation check: dropping the pathless skip or the dedupe in the old code fails the walk pin, and forcing a target for an unmapped re-export fails the export pin.

Checks

  • Complexity (sonar_cc): _js_star_bound 9, _js_star_following 7, _record_js_export_bindings 9, _js_export_specifiers 10. No function in either file is above 15.
  • ruff check and ruff format --check on codebase_rag and evals: clean.
  • ty check --python .venv codebase_rag --exclude codebase_rag/tests: all checks passed.
  • No new duplicated literals or regexes. The new tests have no composite asserts, no multi-call pytest.raises blocks, and keep the file's actual-first assert order.
  • Targeted tests (pytest -n 2), 28 files: 1075 passed, 1 skipped. The skip is the existing test_rename_op.py:293 skip, unrelated to this change. The files were:
