Greptile's second review (on a8a4447) found four more cases where an extract or inline applied and passed its graph check but broke compilation or changed behavior. All four are fixed on 5e08a09, each with a test that compiles or runs the result; all 12 new tests fail on a8a4447.
The branch also merges the updated move PR, which now carries the latest main. |

inlining for both base methods and overrides; keep the existing caller checks
for methods outside an override hierarchy.

…1535) Ports extract (a span of whole statements into a new function; inputs become parameters, outputs are returned) and inline (a single-return function at every call site the graph knows, the definition removed once no caller remains) from the old feat/extract-inline line, with its review fixes from fix/extract-inline-threads, onto the move branch. Adds `cgr extract`, `cgr inline` and the `extract` and `inline` MCP tools. Adapted to main: inline locates a call with sites.call_node_at; the CLI and MCP handlers check the project's source root and build their re-ingest like change_signature; the contract step returns what it decided instead of a mutated report (no Any), and a failed measure or rollback re-ingest reports graph_incomplete instead of raising, which the MCP handler records durably.
…names Three scope-analysis gaps let an extracted helper change what the caller sees: - JS `x += 1`, `x++` and `--x` were reads only, so the helper updated its own parameter and the caller kept the old value. They now bind the name like `x = ...` does. - An output bound before the span and written on only some paths through it was not an input, so the helper returned it unbound (Python UnboundLocalError, JS undefined). It is now passed in; when it may itself be unbound before the span, the extract is refused. - A name the span rebinds is now an output when a closure defined before the span reads it, and a span whose closure reads a name the later code rebinds is refused, since the moved closure would keep the helper's stale copy.
Five rewrites changed the program that the extracted code runs in: - A JS output the span declared was always re-declared `const`, so a later `x += 2` threw. It is now `let` when later code writes it, and a `var` stays a `var`. - A Python span that writes a `global` or `nonlocal` name, or holds the declaration itself, is refused: the helper would bind its own local. - A helper extracted from a `@classmethod` is a class method called through `cls`, and one from a `@staticmethod` is a static method called through the class name. A method with no receiver to call through is refused. - A TypeScript helper's parameters carry the declared type of local inputs as well as of parameters. An input with no annotation to carry over (other than an implicitly-any parameter) is refused, as strict mode would reject the untyped parameter. - Lines that continue a multi-line string or template literal keep their exact text through the dedent and re-indent, so the value of the string does not change.
Three inline rewrites changed what the program does: - An attribute argument counted as freely duplicable, so `twice(counter.value)` ran an effectful getter twice and an unused parameter dropped it. Only names and literals may now be read more or fewer times than once; an attribute argument needs exactly one use, in order, as a call argument already did. The object of a module-qualified call is still dropped with the call. - A decorated definition is refused: its callers called the decorated object, which the bare returned expression bypassed. - Removing a definition that shares its first or last line with other code now cuts only the definition's own bytes, so a statement on the same line survives.
A write inside `c && (x = 1)`, `c || (x = 1)`, `c ? (x = 1) : 0`, a logical assignment, or Python's `and`/`or`/conditional expression or a comprehension counted as binding on every path. The helper then did not take the name, and handed it back unbound or undefined on the path that skipped the write. Such writes are now conditional, so the name is also an input. A Python walrus now binds its name, and overwrites it rather than reading it, so a walrus output is returned to the caller instead of being lost in the helper.
A name the span assigns, but the enclosing function never declares, belongs to an outer scope: a module-level `let` or `var`, or an undeclared global. The helper declared it as its own `let`, so the write never reached the binding that the rest of the program reads. Such spans are now refused. What the function declares is taken where the span sees it: its parameters, its top-level declarations, every `var` (hoisted), and the catch and loop bindings inside the span.
…helper A helper extracted from `function build<T>(x: T)` was declared beside `build` as `function part(x: T)`, outside the `<T>` it names, so the file stopped compiling (TS2304). The helper now declares the type parameters its parameters and body name, plus any their constraints or defaults name, and the call passes them explicitly (`part<T>(x)`), since a parameter only the body uses has nothing to infer it from. A method's helper stays a method, so the class's own parameters remain in scope.
Removing the last name an import bound deleted its whole line, so
`from pkg.util import helper; print('ready')` lost the print, and it
deleted the only import of the module, so whatever the module does at
import time (registering a handler) stopped running.
Such an import now becomes one that only loads the module, in place:
`import pkg.util`, `from . import util` for a relative one, and
`import './util'` or `require('./util')` in JavaScript. A Python form
that would bind a name the file already uses for something else keeps
the original import, and with it the definition. Only an import that
loads nothing new (a type-only one, or the importer's own package) is
cut, and then only its own bytes and separator when other code shares
its line.
A name argument was substituted as is, but the call read it before the callee ran and the copied expression reads it where the parameter was, after any call it makes first. With `helper(x)` returning `advance() + x` and `advance` setting the global `n = 2`, `helper(n)` gave 11 and the inlined `advance() + n` 12. Such a call is now left unchanged unless nothing can rebind the name meanwhile: in Python a local of the enclosing function that no nested scope declares `nonlocal`, in JavaScript a binding the file declares and never assigns. A read under Python's `x if c else y` counts as late, since `c` runs first.
…eneric returns Extract now refuses a helper name the edited function already binds (the bare call would reach that binding) and a span sharing a line with code outside it (a one-line def's header or a closing brace would move into the helper). Inline keeps a default import beside the last removed named import, and refuses a returned expression that names the callee's own type parameter.
…nder the complexity limit
… inlining an overridden method
Main now scopes CYPHER_GRAPH_REFERENCES to the target's label (a TS type and a function can share a qualified name, issue #2520); inline queried it without one and every inline failed on the missing parameter.
The page said an import statement binding only the inlined name is deleted. The code keeps it as a plain module import (`from pkg.util import wrapper` becomes `import pkg.util`), so the module's import-time work still runs, and cuts only an import that loads nothing new: a type-only import, or `from . import wrapper`.
extract replaces statements with a call to a new helper and inline replaces call sites and removes the definition, but neither was in an annotation set: both reported destructiveHint=false, and test_mcp_tool_annotations.py failed on them. Add both to MCP_DESTRUCTIVE_TOOLS, to the tests' WRITERS and destructive lists, to the read-only refusal test's edit operations, and to the documented list of destructive tools.
Rename, change_signature, move and extract each spelled out the same three messages; define them once in constants/cli.py and alias the per-operation names to them, so every name keeps its value. _SIMPLE_ARG was never referenced outside its own test: inline decides whether an argument needs parentheses from the syntax tree, in _is_atomic. Remove it and that test. Also replace a chained conditional expression with if/elif, pass the children straight to next(iter(...)), and mark an unpacked value the inline planner does not read.

Summary
Before: there was no way to pull a block of statements out into its own function, or to fold a small function back into its callers.
cgr extractandcgr inlinedon't exist.After:
cgr extract <function> <start> <end> <name>moves a span of whole statements into a new function. Values it reads become parameters and values used later become return values.cgr inline <function>replaces every call site the graph knows about with the body of a single-return function, then removes the definition once nothing calls it. Both are also available as theextractandinlineMCP tools. Each run reports what it changed and the edit contract's verdict. How: this is built on the move branch (#2907), so it is stacked on that PR. Inline finds each call with
sites.call_node_at. The CLI and MCP handlers check the project's source root and re-ingest the same waychange_signaturedoes. If a measure or rollback re-ingest fails, the result reportsgraph_incompleteinstead of raising, and the MCP handler records that durably.codebase_rag/editing/extract_*.pyandinline_operation.py, plus the CLI commands, MCP tools, tool descriptions anddocs/architecture/extract-inline.md.Demo
