Summary

  • Problem: cgr check --fail-on-found, and the MCP write delta, failed behaviour-preserving refactors that remove a function's own inner closure or nested helper:

    • a JS reduce callback replaced by a loop;
    • a named function expression swapped for an arrow;
    • a nested Python def inlined;
    • a Rust closure replaced by a loop.

    The inner function went to symbols.removed, and the enclosing function was reported as a dangling caller of it, although the same edit removed the call. Exit 1.

    • Cause: _dangling read every site from the base graph. It spared a re-parsed caller only when the caller re-bound to a renamed symbol or was itself gone. A caller that still exists and no longer makes the call matched neither.
  • Fix:

    • A caller the edit touched (it is in the after-snapshot) is now judged by its new body. If the body, read from its new span, no longer names the removed symbol as a whole identifier, the call went with it and the caller is not listed.
    • An anonymous callee (total.anonymous_0_45, a Rust closure) is never named, so it went with the expression that held it.
    • This covers both of the issue's suggestions:
      • nested callees;
      • Rust closures named at module level;
      • and, more generally, a top-level helper removed together with its only call in the same file.
    • Still reported:
      • a body that still names the symbol (a nested def deleted while its call stays, which raises NameError);
      • a caller the edit did not touch;
      • a body that cannot be read.
    • symbols.removed still lists the inner function, as information.
    • Docs: a paragraph in structural-delta.md.

Demo

cgr check --fail-on-found on the issue's cl repro: main vs this branch

The GIF plays the issue's cl repro against Memgraph. The graph is reset and re-indexed between steps.

  1. JS: reduce callback replaced by a loop.
    • main: dangling: tot.js.total -> tot.js.total.anonymous_0_45, exit 1.
    • This branch: dangling: [], exit 0. The callback is still in removed.
  2. Python: nested double inlined. The program still prints [2, 4].
    • main: tot.py.nested -> tot.py.nested.double, exit 1.
    • This branch: exit 0.
  3. Negative: def double deleted while [double(x) for x in xs] stays. Python raises NameError.
    • Both main and this branch report nested -> double, exit 1.

The new tests pass. They also cover the named-function-to-arrow and Rust closure cases.

Test Plan

  • All existing unit tests pass (make test): related suites run, full suite see below
  • New tests added for new functionality
  • Integration tests pass (if applicable)
  • Manual testing performed

Red/green TDD in codebase_rag/tests/test_check_dropped_inner_calls.py (9 tests). They run through observe with the stateful graph double and through run_check against a git base.

Red on main (aae56be): 6 failed, 3 passed. The 6 failures:

  • test_a_dropped_inner_function_leaves_no_dangling_caller, all four refactors:
    • js-callback-to-loop;
    • js-named-function-to-arrow;
    • python-nested-def-inlined;
    • rust-closure-to-loop;
  • test_a_helper_removed_with_its_only_call_is_not_dangling;
  • test_cgr_check_passes_a_callback_replaced_by_a_loop.

The 3 that pass on main are the negatives.

Green on this branch: 9 passed.

Negatives:

  • A nested def removed while its call stays is still dangling, and the test runs Python to show the NameError.
  • The edited caller that still calls a removed helper is still dangling.
  • A caller in a file the edit didn't touch is still dangling.
  • The inlined case also guards the match:
    • its new body holds doubled, the name only as part of another identifier;
    • a sibling function in the same file uses double, outside the caller's span.

Mutation checks, 4 caught:

  • the check dropped;
  • a substring match instead of a whole identifier;
  • the name never found;
  • the whole file read instead of the caller's body.

A redundant "caller in an edited file" guard was removed after its mutation survived: a caller the edit didn't touch isn't in the after-snapshot to read.

Also:

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Updated dangling-caller findings for removed or renamed same-file functions. When an edited caller no longer references the function, the finding is skipped; unresolved calls and cases where caller code cannot be read remain reportable.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified how edited callers, aliases, method calls, function values, and unreadable caller code affect dangling-caller findings.

Replacing a callback with a loop, a named function expression with an
arrow, or inlining a nested helper removes the inner function and the
call to it in one edit. `_dangling` read every site from the base graph
and spared a re-parsed caller only when it re-bound to a renamed symbol
or was itself gone, so the enclosing function was reported as a dangling
caller of what it no longer calls, and `cgr check --fail-on-found` failed
a behaviour-preserving change.

A caller the edit touched is now judged by its new body: if the body no
longer names the removed symbol as a whole identifier, the call went
with it. An anonymous callee is never named, so it went with the
expression that held it. A body that still names the symbol (a nested
def removed while its call stays), or a caller the edit did not touch,
is reported as before.

📝 Walkthrough

Dangling-caller detection now checks eligible removed or renamed callees against the caller’s readable, re-parsed source. Tests cover cases where callers no longer name the callee and cases where findings remain. Architecture documentation describes the behavior.

Changes: Dangling Caller Detection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Re-evaluate dangling callers
codebase_rag/structural_delta.py, codebase_rag/tests/test_check_dropped_inner_calls.py, docs/architecture/structural-delta.md
The check inspects source only for same-file function calls whose callee has no other reference site. It skips eligible findings when the re-parsed caller body no longer contains the callee name as a whole identifier. Findings remain when source is unavailable or unreadable, or when calls use forms that do not require naming the callee. Tests cover JavaScript, Python, and Rust cases.

Explanation

The description follows the repository template and provides a clear summary, demo, change type, related issue, detailed test plan, checklist status, and known test results. It also documents the affected cases and remaining negative controls.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The change meets the coding requirements in #3246. _dangling evaluates an eligible touched caller from its after-snapshot body and preserves findings when the call remains, the caller is untouched, or the body cannot be read. The four requested refactors are covered by tests. The tests also cover aliases, methods, function values, and the cgr check path. The shared structural-delta path applies to the write delta and check flows. Removed symbols remain in symbols.removed.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within #3246. Production code changes only dangling-caller detection and passes the repository root needed to read updated caller bodies. The added tests verify the requested behavior and negative cases. The documentation records the same structural-delta behavior.

I checked this against #3246's repro. Both cases now report dangling_callers: [] and exit 0. The named function expression → arrow variant (names → pick) also passes, and so does an edit that removes helper together with its only call (main reported that one as dangling too). The controls still fail as they should: a nested def removed while the call stays, and an untouched caller of a removed function.

One case turns from caught into missed: a caller that reaches the removed function under another name. _still_names searches the caller's new body for callee.name. A call through an import alias never spells that name, so when the same edit touches the caller's file for any other reason, the site is dropped even though the call is still there:

util.js has export default function compute and app.js imports it as calc and calls calc(x) from run; one edit drops the default export from util.js and adds an unrelated function to app.js; node fails with does not provide an export named default; main reports removed compute, dangling_callers run, exit 1; PR 3314 reports removed compute, dangling_callers empty, exit 0

mkdir dflt && cd dflt && git init -q
printf '{"type": "module"}\n' > package.json
printf 'export default function compute(x) {\n  return x + 1;\n}\n' > util.js
printf 'import calc from "./util.js";\n\nexport function run(x) {\n  return calc(x);\n}\n' > app.js
git add -A && git -c user.email=x@x -c user.name=x commit -qm init
cgr -q start --repo-path . --update-graph
# one edit: util.js drops its default export, app.js gains an unrelated function
printf 'export function other(x) {\n  return x;\n}\n' > util.js
printf '\nexport function extra() {\n  return 0;\n}\n' >> app.js
node -e 'import("./app.js").then((m) => m.run(1)).catch((e) => console.log(e.message))'
cgr -q check --fail-on-found | jq -c '{removed: [.symbols.removed[] | split(".") | .[-1]], dangling_callers: [.dangling_callers[] | .caller | split(".") | .[-1]]}'; echo "exit=${PIPESTATUS[0]}"
# The requested module './util.js' does not provide an export named 'default'
# main:    {"removed":["compute"],"dangling_callers":["run"]}  exit=1
# PR 3314: {"removed":["compute"],"dangling_callers":[]}       exit=0

The same edit shape across alias forms (the callee is removed, the caller's file gets an unrelated addition, and the aliased call stays):

caller binds the callee as runtime main this PR
JS import calc from "./util.js" (default) SyntaxError run dangling, exit 1 nothing, exit 0
TS import calc from "./util" (default) tsc TS1192 run dangling, exit 1 nothing, exit 0
Python from util import helper as h ImportError run dangling + importer, exit 1 importer only, exit 1
JS import { helper as h } SyntaxError run dangling + importer, exit 1 importer only, exit 1
CommonJS const { helper: h } = require("./util") TypeError on call run dangling + importer, exit 1 importer only, exit 1
Rust use crate::util::helper as h; E0432 run dangling + importer, exit 1 importer only, exit 1

For the default imports nothing else catches the break, because dangling_importers doesn't cover a default binding. For the named aliases the importer finding still fails the run, but the report no longer names run as the call site to fix.

Suggestion: in _still_names, also search for every name the caller's file binds to the callee: the bound of each before.bindings entry with importer_path == site.caller_path and symbol == site.callee, plus the default-import binding when the callee was its module's default export. Alternatively, apply the text test only where #3246 needs it: a callee nested under the caller's qualified name, or an anonymous one. Every other removed callee would keep today's rule.
