Summary

  • Problem: cgr context and the MCP context tool promise a slice "within a token budget". On a central or large target they printed far more than the budget, slowly.
    • ~40× the budget: a 2-line function called by 2,000 tests printed 163,019 tokens for the default budget of 4,000, while reporting used_tokens: 3994. The causes:
      • omitted listed all 3,502 candidates that didn't fit;
      • the budget counted only each piece's source, not the name, file, span and reason printed beside it.
    • Slow on central symbols: every reaching test's definition was fetched before budgeting, one graph query (plus an ownership check that re-lists the projects, plus a file read) per test. Nearly all of them were then thrown away.
    • Quadratic on large targets: _trim popped one line at a time and re-encoded the whole rest each time. A 9,000-line class took 67 s at --budget 500.
  • Fix:
    • The budget covers what is printed:
      • Each piece is charged its source and every field beside it, counted as serialised. tokens and used_tokens count both.
      • omitted names the ten best-ranked candidates left out, and the new omitted_count counts them all.
      • The printed slice is now the budget plus a short envelope: target, resolved, the counts and that sample.
    • No per-candidate work for what can't fit:
      • A caller's or test's source is read only if its fields alone still fit.
      • A test's span comes from the ReachIndex already built (ReachIndex.span), never from a definition query per test.
      • Each quoted file is decoded once, via read_source_lines. It is factored out of extract_source_lines with unchanged behaviour, behind a cache keyed by path, mtime and size.
    • Linear trim: _trim bisects the number of leading lines, so it takes a few dozen encodes. It keeps exactly the lines the line-by-line trim kept, and a prefix that costs exactly the budget still fits.
    • Docs: context-slice.md (the budget, omitted/omitted_count, the reads).
  • Compatibility:
    • omitted keeps its type but is now capped; omitted_count is new.
    • tokens per piece now includes the piece's fields, so very small budgets (a few dozen tokens) no longer hold a trimmed target. The existing tests that pinned a 25-token slice now size their budgets from the target's own fields.

cgr context on the issue's ctxb repro: main vs this branch

The GIF plays the issue's ctxb repro through the CLI against Memgraph: 40 test files with 2,000 tests calling app.core, and a 9,001-line big.py. whole output is the printed JSON counted with the same encoder.

  • cgr context app.core (budget 4,000):
    • main: 4.7 s, 499 pieces, 3,502 names in omitted, 163,019 tokens.
    • This branch: 1.4 s, 46 pieces, a 10-name omitted beside omitted_count: 3955, 4,428 tokens.
  • cgr context big.Big --budget 500:
    • main: 67.0 s.
    • This branch: 1.1 s, truncated: true, 566 tokens.
  • The new tests pass.

Test Plan

  • All existing unit tests pass (make test): related suites run, full suite see below
  • New tests added for new functionality
  • Integration tests pass (if applicable)
  • Manual testing performed

Red/green TDD in codebase_rag/tests/test_context_budget_output.py (11 tests), on a real index in the stateful graph double: 300 tests and 300 call sites reaching core, and a 1,500-method class.

Red on main (aae56be): all 8 tests in the file at that point failed.

  • test_the_printed_slice_fits_the_budget[4000|1000|300]: 40,261, 22,158 and 16,763 printed tokens;
  • test_a_piece_is_charged_for_its_fields;
  • the read-count test, then 300 reads;
  • test_a_large_target_trims_without_re_encoding_every_line: 4,403 encodes;
  • test_the_trim_keeps_the_most_whole_lines_that_fit;
  • test_a_neighbourhood_that_fits_omits_nothing (no omitted_count).

The existing test_context_slice.py passed (14).

Green on this branch: 11 passed. Besides the above:

  • test_each_quoted_file_is_read_once_and_no_test_is_fetched_by_name: one decode per file, and only the target's definition comes from the graph.
  • test_nothing_is_read_once_the_budget_is_spent: a budget the target fills reads no caller or test, and counts all 600 left out.
  • test_a_budget_that_exactly_fits_some_lines_keeps_them.

Negatives:

  • A small neighbourhood is whole, with omitted == [] and omitted_count == 0.
  • The bisected trim keeps exactly the lines a line-by-line trim kept.
  • The existing context-slice, normalisation and source-root suites pass.

Mutation checks, 8 caught:

  • fields not charged;
  • no floor before reading;
  • the floor applied to the target;
  • the sample uncapped;
  • no count;
  • < instead of <= in the bisection;
  • the file cache dropped;
  • test spans lost.

Three redundant lines were removed after their mutations survived:

  • the eager empty-source skip;
  • the low == 0 special case;
  • an extra rstrip, which slice_source_lines already does.

Also:

  • Measured with the in-memory graph: app.core at budget 4,000 went from 127,009 to 4,337 printed tokens and from 2.9 s to 0.3 s. big.Big (3,000 methods) at budget 500 went from 56.7 s to 0.3 s.
  • Local tiktoken: this sandbox can't download tiktoken's cl100k_base (the host is blocked), which is why main's context tests sit in the known-failure set here. The runs above used the same encoding file, taken from a PyPI wheel that bundles it, through TIKTOKEN_CACHE_DIR. With it, every test matching context, source, extract, snippet, mcp, cli, reach, graph_query or token passed: 2,413 passed, 0 failed.
  • ruff check, ruff format and ty are clean.
    • Full suite with Memgraph (local, -n 4, tiktoken's encoding file provided through TIKTOKEN_CACHE_DIR): 10 failed, 17,826 passed, 176 skipped. The 10 failures are all in the set main fails in this environment (LLM provider keys, the build-binary check, the unreachable-network tests); none is new, and the context tests that need the encoder pass.
  • Manual: the demo above.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Context slices now include metadata in token-budget calculations and trim large target sections to the longest fitting whole-line excerpt, marking content as truncated when necessary.
    • All candidates that do not fit are counted, while the omission list shows up to ten highest-ranked items.
    • Source reads are deferred until candidates may fit, files are reused when building slices, and read failures no longer prevent slice generation.
    • Quoted test excerpts now include their leading decorators.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the context-slice guide to explain budget accounting, omission counts, and source handling.

`context` counted only each piece's source against the budget, listed
every candidate that did not fit in `omitted`, fetched every reaching
test's definition before budgeting, and trimmed an oversized target one
line and one full re-encode at a time. A 2-line function reached by 2,000
tests printed 163,019 tokens for a 4,000 budget after 21 s, and a
9,000-line class took 87 s to trim.

- A piece is charged for what it prints: its source and every field
  beside it (`tokens` and `used_tokens` count both).
- `omitted` names the best-ranked ten candidates left out, and the new
  `omitted_count` counts them all.
- Callers' and tests' sources are read only for a candidate whose fields
  still fit; a test's span comes from the reach index already built
  instead of one definition query per test, and each quoted file is
  decoded once (`read_source_lines`, factored out of
  `extract_source_lines`, behind a cache keyed by mtime and size).
- An oversized target is trimmed by bisecting its line count: a few dozen
  encodes instead of one per line, with the same lines kept.

The context-slice tests that pinned a 25-token slice of the target now
size their budgets from the target's own fields, and the normalisation
test drives the test piece through its loader.

through `_lines`. Normalising only `_lines` therefore left the path
`_target_piece` PREFERS still emitting "def scale(a: int) -> int:\r", and
every Windows unit job failed. Deliberately not done in the shared reader,

P2 Badge Scope the source cache to one context build

When a long-running CLI/MCP process sees a file replaced with different same-length contents while its modification time is preserved (for example by an archive, rsync -t, or another copy operation), this global cache reuses the old decoded lines because its key contains only the path, st_mtime_ns, and size. Subsequent context slices can therefore quote stale code even after the graph is refreshed; use a per-context cache or include file identity/change metadata that also changes for such replacements.

Summary

This PR counts each context piece’s source and fields against the budget and reduces work spent on pieces that cannot fit.

  • Context slices count printed piece details against the token budget.
  • Context reads caller and test source only when pieces might fit.
  • Large context targets keep the longest prefix that fits quickly.

Two non-blocking concerns were reproduced in codebase_rag/context_slice.py: an exact-fit piece can slightly exceed its reported serialized cost, and a timestamp-preserving same-size file change can leave a long-lived process quoting stale source. The focused existing test selections passed. No blocking issues were found; these concerns do not make the PR unsafe to merge.

Acknowledged intent: vitali87 states that the printed slice includes a short envelope outside the piece budget, and that very small budgets may no longer hold a target.

a count of four digits or more cost a token more than it was charged.

The reach index span read start_line alone, the def line, so a decorated
test lost its decorators where definition() had kept them (#2428). The
dead-code node fetch now carries decorated_start_line and the span starts
there.

Charge pieces at their nested JSON depth.

_piece_tokens counts each piece as a top-level object, but ContextSlice.pieces prints each piece four spaces deeper. With the 300-test fixture and a valid 10,000-token budget, this admits 155 pieces and reports 9,948 used tokens, while the printed response reaches 11,733 tokens with no omitted names. That exceeds the tested budget + 400 allowance by 1,333 tokens. Include the response nesting in _piece_tokens before _fit accepts a piece.

Update _piece_tokens so token measurement accounts for each piece’s nesting
inside ContextSlice.pieces: indent every line of the serialized piece by two
JSON indentation levels before calling count_tokens. Use this nested
representation in the existing iterative token-counting loop, while preserving
the current self-referential tokens handling.

_piece_tokens measured a piece as a top-level JSON object, but the slice
prints it two levels deep, every line indented by four more spaces. The
gap grew with the piece count: a 10,000 budget over 300 reaching tests
printed 10,478 tokens, past the budget plus its 400-token envelope.

Re CodeRabbit's outside-diff finding "Charge pieces at their nested JSON depth" (context_slice.py:424-446): confirmed, though the overshoot here is smaller than reported. Each piece was measured flush left but printed two indent levels deep. With the 300-test fixture, a 10,000 budget printed 10,478 tokens (78 over budget + 400), and a 20,000 budget printed 20,770.

_piece_tokens now measures the piece with every line indented by 2 × MCP_JSON_INDENT, keeping the re-measure loop. The whole-response test now also covers the 10,000 and 20,000 budgets, which print 10,229 and 20,272 tokens (commit d512a17).
