Source maps not always required/useful, especially when using the platform outside the context of the polymer project. This allows the full platform to be built, unminified, without source maps.

I assume you mean Polymer/tools#15 ? but that also strange since you already said it was low priority but feeling the pinch with 100+ elements to update on every build is exactly the problem haha
