before hearing of xorca I developed my own package to open NEMO files and make them compatible with xgcm, xnemogcm. I feel that it is not much usefull to develop twice the same tool. I propose that you maybe have a look at my package and see if you would be interested that I try to merge some properties. The doc is not written, but every function should have a proper docstring.
The mentality is quite different, with no hardcoding of the variables position, instead the name of the file is used to set the proper position (e.g. grid_T files for T points, etc).
I opened this issue to open the discussion, of course 1) no hurry to discuss this proposition and 2) maybe nothing appropriated for the development of xorca has been written in xnemogcm.
