…Map data A config-update reset puts a node's entry back at (config, in_progress), which is indistinguishable from the run an older config Job did. If that Job's completion was still in flight, it was recorded as the new run's, and the node finished on the old data with no diff left to retry. Package pods read each key once at start, so nothing corrects it afterwards. Stamp a config-stage Job with a hash of the ConfigMap data it mounts at creation. When recording a completion, compare it with the live ConfigMap; on a mismatch, delete the Job instead so the stage re-runs on current data. Jobs without the stamp, and Jobs whose ConfigMap is gone, record as before. Follow-up to the unrecorded-Job clearing in NVIDIA#788; part of NVIDIA#776. The hash guard is correct for completions handled after the ConfigMap update, and merged onto current main (with #788) it builds and vets cleanly, though CI has only run it on the pre-#788 base. The residual window is wider than the description says (inline), and a test pinning the uncached read plus a design-doc fix would help.

The remaining window is wider than the description says. For a node already at (config, in_progress, restarts 0), the reset in HandleConfigUpdates writes nothing: NodeState.Upsert returns unchanged, the node isn't Changed(), and computeNodeStateDelta drops identical entries anyway. So a completion JobReconciler records any time after the pass read the node (informer lag included) and before the ConfigMap update is never overwritten: the stamp matched when it was recorded, the diff is then consumed, and the node stays complete on the old data. That's the case this PR targets, a node mid-config when the gate opens.
Question: could the reset write reset entries unconditionally (e.g. an uncached patchNodeState per resettable node), so the rerun predicate clears the recorded Job and the stage re-runs on the new data? If not here, the residual-window note should say the window starts at the pass's node read, not at the save.
| Because completed pods now linger, pod-deletion can no longer be the processed-once marker. A persisted Job annotation, `nodewright.nvidia.com/state-recorded: "true"`, replaces it. On each Job event: | ||

| - **`Complete`, not yet marked** → read the `Succeeded` child pod for the container name (selected by the Job's controller UID, not by name — a same-named prior Job's pod can still be terminating), record completion through the existing node-state path (upgrade/uninstall/interrupt special cases unchanged), then one Job Update sets `state-recorded` and the success TTL. If the child pod was already GC'd, fall back to the Job's own stage/node/interrupt labels. Already-marked Jobs are skipped, so duplicate events are harmless. The recorded attempt count now comes from the Job's failed-pod count — a user-visible improvement over today's usually-zero restart count. | ||

A config-stage Job also carries `nodewright.nvidia.com/config-hash`, a hash of the ConfigMap data it was created against; if the live ConfigMap no longer matches, the completion is not recorded and the Job is deleted so the stage re-runs on the current data (a config-update reset puts the entry back at `config`, which otherwise looks identical to the run the Job did). This adds a deletion of an unprocessed Complete Job, but rule 2 (line 226) still says "Unprocessed finished Jobs are never deleted except by the two sweeps", and line 233 still says config-update handling deletes only "unfinished or terminally failed" Jobs, which has been stale since #788. Since this PR edits the doc, could rule 2 list both exceptions (this completion check and #788's reset-time deletion) and line 233 be updated?

None of these specs exercise the uncached read from 3048e19: the reconciler gets the same fake client as both cached and uncached reader (NewJobReconciler(c, c, ...)), so reverting configSuperseded (or the ApplyPackage stamp) to r.Client would still pass. Could one spec use a cached client holding the old ConfigMap and a separate uncached reader holding the new one, and assert the Job isn't recorded? node_state_merge_test.go:346 has the pattern.

No blocking issues of mine; 2 non-blocking comments; agree with 1 open blocking thread from other reviewers.
Outside the diff
operator/internal/controller/job_controller.go:128: nit (non-blocking): The uncached field comment says it is used only to re-read a Node after a patch conflict, which this PR makes false.
configSuperseded now reads ConfigMaps through it, so a reader trusting the comment could swap that read back to the cache, reopening the stale-match case the uncached read was added to close.
Update the field comment at job_controller.go:128-129 to mention the config-hash ConfigMap read; skyhook_controller.go:341-343 describes the same field on SkyhookReconciler only in terms of Node patch conflicts and needs the same addition.

nit (non-blocking): The package ConfigMap name formula and the uncached-or-cached reader fallback are copied inline at both new sites instead of shared.
The guard now depends on this lookup name matching the volume name in job_builder.go:297; if one copy drifts, configSuperseded gets NotFound and records, and ApplyPackage stops stamping, so the check switches itself off with no error. The same formula already appears at skyhook_controller.go:2411, 2453 and 2471.
Consider a small helper for the ConfigMap name used by job_builder.go:297 and both new reads (job_controller.go:262, skyhook_controller.go:3880), and one for the reader fallback duplicated at job_controller.go:264-267 and skyhook_controller.go:3882-3885.

… the ConfigMap lookups Rewrite the package's node entry to config, in progress from a fresh read once the ConfigMap is replaced, so a completion recorded after the pass read the node cannot stand on the old data. Share the ConfigMap name and reader fallback between the Job builder, the stamp and the check, pin the uncached reads with specs that split the cached and live clients, and bring the design doc's Job-retention rules in line. Summary
Follow-up to #788 (CodeRabbit's "prevent an in-flight old completion from recording onto the reset state", which was deferred as a heavy lift). Part of #776.
A config-update reset puts a node's entry back at (
config,in_progress). That is indistinguishable from the run an older config Job did, so if that Job's completion was still in flight (or its Job object was still unrecorded)JobReconcilerrecorded it as the new run's. The node then finished on the old ConfigMap, and the ConfigMap diff was already consumed, so nothing retried. Package pods read each key once at start (subPath mounts), so nothing corrects it afterwards.Change
ApplyPackagestamps a config-stage Job withnodewright.nvidia.com/config-hash: a hash of the live ConfigMap data the pod will mount (sorted keys, length-prefixed).JobReconciler.handleCompleteJobcompares the stamp with the live ConfigMap before recording. On a mismatch it foreground-deletes the Job instead, and the stage is re-created from the entry against the current data.packageConfigMapName, uncachedReader) used by the Job builder, the stamp and the check, so the check cannot drift off the volume name. Why a content hash
metadata.generationis already a Job label, but any spec edit bumps it, so it cannot separate "config data changed" from an unrelated edit. The hash is taken from the live ConfigMap, not the spec: the pod mounts the live one, and the spec can be ahead of it while the gate is closed (comparing against the spec would reject valid completions until the gate opens).Residual window
HandleConfigUpdatessaves the reset node state before it updates the ConfigMap, and a node already at (config,in_progress) is unchanged by that reset, so nothing is written for it. A completionJobReconcilerrecorded after the pass read the node and before the ConfigMap landed would stand on the old data: the stamp matched when it was recorded, and the diff is then consumed.Once the ConfigMap is replaced,
restartConfigStagerewrites each reset node's entry to (config,in_progress) from a fresh (uncached) read, under the optimistic lock. Anything recorded before that is overwritten, and anything after fails the hash check, so no completion on the old data survives. An entry that is gone or atuninstall/apply/upgradeis left alone. Reordering the two writes would risk losing the diff if the node save failed, so the order stays. If the rewrite itself errors, the reconcile errors and retries, but the diff is already consumed, so that failure leaves only the narrow window described above.Testing
ginkgo ./internal/controller/: 565/565 pass;golangci-lint: 0 issues.ApplyPackagestamps the Job.restartConfigStagerewrites an entry a concurrent writer moved on and leaves entries at apply/upgrade/uninstall or already at config in progress alone; the config-hash check and the stamp each read the ConfigMap from a separate live client while the cache still holds the old one.Related: #788, #809.
