A config change records its keys for the whole NodeWright, and with keys present HasInterrupt consulted only the configInterrupts matching them. A package whose own interrupt never ran on a node (for example a reboot that was failing) then completed at config without it and the node was uncordoned, or a newly selected node or a node reset after a config cycle skipped it for the same reason. Track the owed interrupt per node and package in PackageStatus (interruptPending): set at apply or upgrade for a package that declares an interrupt, cleared at post-interrupt. While set, HasInterrupt and the interrupt merge add the package's own interrupt to the matching configInterrupts, and the existing priority picks the winner. Entries written before the field existed read as not pending, so no migration is needed and an upgrade does not re-run anything. package rerun and update-state set or clear the flag when they write apply, upgrade or post-interrupt. The per-node flag reads well, and the no-shim argument holds for entries that have settled. There is one behavior issue inline, plus a mock that needs regenerating.
The upgrade gap is a bit wider than the description says. Any entry short of post-interrupt at upgrade time reads as not owed, including one erroring at interrupt, which is the #776 case itself. So a node stuck on a failing reboot when the operator is upgraded still completes at config on the next ConfigMap edit. It's worth stating in the description.

issue: The flag is cleared only at post-interrupt, but HandleConfigUpdates also resets nodes at (interrupt, complete) (resettable, skyhook_controller.go:2335). The reset keeps the flag, so HasInterrupt is true and the package's own interrupt runs again. For a reboot, that is a second reboot of a node that has just rebooted. Taking a NodeState through apply, interrupt complete and then a config reset gives NextStage=interrupt here; on main it completes at config. ProgressSkipped (:814) leaves a skipped package in the same state.
Suggestion: also clear the flag at (interrupt, complete), both here and in ProgressSkipped.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Agreed, that would be a second reboot on a node that just rebooted. Fixed in 36df6a7: the flag is now cleared at (interrupt, complete) in UpsertOwing, in ProgressSkipped, and in update-state. Added specs for apply -> interrupt complete -> config reset (HasInterrupt false) and for a skipped interrupt being promoted.

chore: This mock is hand-written, but AGENTS.md requires make generate-mocks after editing a mocked interface. Regenerating moves it after NextStage and adds the _Call type and the EXPECT() helper.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Regenerated with make generate-mocks in 36df6a7. mockery was built with an older Go than the module, so I rebuilt it with go1.27.2 first. The generator also touched other mock files (license headers, import aliases); I kept only the SkyhookNode.go change to keep the diff on topic.

docs/user-guide/cli.md:107: issue (non-blocking): The note still says the node-state annotation shape "has been stable since operator v0.7.5", but an older CLI now drops interruptPending.
An older CLI decodes the annotation into its typed PackageStatus, which lacks the field, and writes the whole map back from update-state, reset --package or package rerun. That clears the pending flag for every package on the node, so the next config change that matches no configInterrupts completes them without their reboot.
Extend the note to say that once the operator has this change, these commands should be run with a CLI that also has it.

issue (non-blocking): No test reaches the controller passing node.OwesOwnInterrupt, or the new flag handling in package rerun.
Replacing node.OwesOwnInterrupt with nil here keeps every test green, because the only owesOwn test passes a stub and every other caller passes nil. With that change HasInterrupt still says interrupt but no interrupt is picked for the package, so ProcessInterrupt writes (interrupt, skipped), nothing ever promotes it, and the node stays cordoned. The rerun branch at package_rerun.go:313-315 has no test, and update_state_test.go covers only apply.
Add one spec that runs a real node through fudgeInterruptWithPriority(..., node.OwesOwnInterrupt) after a config change whose keys match no configInterrupts, and an updateNodeAnnotations case in package_rerun_test.go covering apply and post-interrupt.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fair. 36df6a7 pulls the per-node pick into nodeInterrupt and adds a spec that runs a real wrapped node through it after a config change matching no configInterrupts: owed gives the reboot, settled gives none. I checked it fails when node.OwesOwnInterrupt is replaced with nil. package_rerun_test.go now has updateNodeAnnotations cases for apply, upgrade, post-interrupt, config and interrupt (510a3fe), and update_state_test.go covers post-interrupt and interrupt complete as well as apply.
| A failing `uninstall-interrupt` cannot be ended by a rerun or a reset. Both remove the package's entry, an absent entry reads as already uninstalled, and so the operator abandons the uninstall interrupt rather than running it again; `package rerun --stage` cannot target `uninstall-interrupt` either. Fix the cause and delete the failed Job instead. | ||

|
||
| A configMap change does not retry the interrupt either. When the package's configMap changes while it is `erroring` at `config`, `interrupt` or `post-interrupt`, the operator deletes its interrupt Job and sends the package back through `config` with the changed keys recorded. From then on the package's own `interrupt` is not consulted: only its `configInterrupts` entries matching the changed keys decide whether an interrupt runs. With no match the package completes at `config` without its interrupt ever having succeeded, and the node is uncordoned; with a match, that entry runs instead. A configMap change is not applied at all while the package is mid-uninstall. | ||

On a node where the package's own `interrupt` has not yet run (the node's `interruptPending` flag is still set), that interrupt still runs after `config`, merged with any `configInterrupts` entry matching the changed keys; the highest-priority one wins (a `reboot` over a service restart). On a node where it already ran, only the matching `configInterrupts` entries decide whether an interrupt runs, so a change that matches none completes at `config` without one. issue (non-blocking): The paragraph still opens with "A configMap change does not retry the interrupt either", which the new text contradicts.
With the flag set, the next sentence says the package's own interrupt "still runs after config", which is a retry. An admin who reads only the opening sentence and edits the ConfigMap of a package erroring at a reboot interrupt gets an unexpected reboot.
Qualify the opening sentence, for example: "A configMap change retries the interrupt only on a node that still owes it."
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Good catch. The opening sentence now reads "A configMap change retries the interrupt only on a node that still owes it.", and the paragraph says when the flag is cleared (36df6a7).

Add caller-level coverage for pkg.HasInterrupt().
The changed tests invoke updateNodeAnnotations directly and supply ownInterrupt. They do not verify the value passed by rerunPackage. Existing rerunPackage fixtures define only an interrupt-free package, and the confirmed-path tests do not inspect the updated annotation. Add stage-rerun tests for both package types and assert the persisted InterruptPending value.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Copy the package interrupt before adding it to the merge.
When this interrupt is the first selected SERVICE interrupt, mergeInterrupt writes services from later interrupts into _package.Interrupt.Services. The package’s own interrupt then contains services from another package. A later selection that runs only this package can restart those unrelated services. Add a deep copy here, and apply the same protection to the existing no-config-update branch at Line 3264.

Summary
Part of #776, defect 1 (and the operator side of defect 3).
A config change records its keys for the whole NodeWright. With keys present,
NodeState.HasInterruptonly consulted theconfigInterruptsentries matching them, so a package whose owninterruptnever ran on a node (for example arebootthat was failing) completed atconfigwithout it and the node was uncordoned. A node that newly matched the selector, or was reset after a config cycle, hit the same thing through the stale keys.Change
Option A from the issue, tracked per node and package.
PackageStatus.InterruptPending(interruptPending): set atapplyorupgradefor a package that declares its owninterrupt, cleared once the interrupt completes (interrupt/complete, including a skipped interrupt promoted to complete) or the package reachespost-interrupt, carried byUpsertotherwise. Clearing atinterrupt/completematters: a config reset of a node at that state must not run the package's own interrupt, such as a reboot, a second time. The wrapper'sUpsertsupplies whether the package declares one, so packages without an interrupt never get the flag and their node annotations are unchanged.HasInterrupt: with config keys recorded, true when aconfigInterruptsentry matches or the package's own interrupt is still owed on this node. With no keys it is unchanged.fudgeInterruptWithPrioritytakes a per-nodeowesOwnand adds the package's own interrupt to the matching ones, so the existing priority picks the winner (arebootbeats a service restart).package rerun --stageandupdate-stateset the flag onapply/upgradeonly for a package that declares an interrupt, and clear it onpost-interrupt(and oninterrupt/completeforupdate-state).nodeInterrupthelper so a spec can cover thenode.OwesOwnInterruptwiring.config/crdandchart/templates(both groups), legacy conversion, docs.No migration shim. The issue asked for one so existing entries read as complete. The flag is stored inverted (pending, not complete), so an entry written before the field existed already reads as "not owed" and nothing re-runs on upgrade. The only gap is a node mid-rollout at upgrade time with keys already recorded, which keeps today's behavior.
