spec: OVOS-READY-1, a boot-readiness signal gates the utterance lifecycle - #285
goldyfruit wants to merge 11 commits into
Conversation
Proposes OVOS-READY-1: an ovos.ready namespace the orchestrator emits readiness transitions on, and one requirement on OVOS-PIPELINE-1's utterance lifecycle -- while unready, decline with a short localized dialog instead of entering the pipeline loop at all. Motivated by a production finding (OpenVoiceOS/ovos-core#1027): right after a restart, a pipeline's bounded match call can exceed its bound from boot contention alone, get declined as designed, and fall through to the next pipeline -- which can match a mid-conversation utterance like a bare 'yes' to an unrelated literal entity instead of continuing the conversation it belonged to. Raising the bound only narrows the race; it does not remove the window. This gates the lifecycle on the orchestrator's own readiness instead. A reference implementation and production measurement are tracked in OpenVoiceOS/ovos-core#1027. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…x reading order and the re-announce contradiction CodeRabbit + the actual production timeline (OpenVoiceOS/ovos-core#1027): - README.md: OVOS-READY-1 was in the index but missing from the orchestrator reading order. - ready-1.md §2 contradicted itself: 'emit true exactly once' alongside 'MAY become unready again, MUST emit the change' leaves a consumer that only saw the first true with no way to know it went stale. Now: emit on every transition, in either direction; ovos.ready.query answers the current state, never a cached first answer. - ready-1.md redefined: 'ready' is the aggregate of every pipeline plugin's own warm/cold report, not the orchestrator's process status. The production timeline shows process status was already positive for 20+ seconds before the misroute, while the pipeline itself was still mid-first-compile. A plugin serving its last state while re-training for a config change is warm (it has a real prior state); the same behaviour on a process that never finished a FIRST compile is serving nothing, or stale state, and must decline instead. … commentary JarbasAl: specs here are prescriptive, not descriptive, and do not mention current code or specific incidents outside an appendix. Dropped the 'Motivation' narrative (issue numbers, code names, a production timeline) for a 'Scope' section in this repo's usual shape, and the closing meta-commentary paragraph. The warm-state redefinition and the re-announce-on-every-transition requirement from the prior revision are kept, written as plain requirements with no narrative around them.
…other subsystems MAY join the readiness aggregate JarbasAl, two review comments: - the decline-with-dialog step MAY play a non-verbal error sound instead of a dialog in the wrong language, when no localized string exists for the resolved language; implementation-defined which. - the readiness aggregate is pipeline plugins at minimum; an implementation MAY fold other subsystems it depends on (audio output, a listener, a GUI surface) into the same ovos.ready aggregate. This specification itself requires only pipeline plugins. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…e, a stable error identifier JarbasAl, three more threads: - dropped the Scope bullet that only said 'we don't specify how a plugin decides it's warm' -- not worth a non-specification; trimmed 2.1 to the plain requirement (report cold once, warm once, no regression for later work the plugin still answers correctly through). - the lifecycle gate now says exactly what he asked: MAY respond with a localized dialog or an error sound; if a dialog is spoken it MUST be localized into the session's own language, not a deployment default in the wrong language. - added a stable error identifier (ovos.ready.not_ready) carried in context.error on whichever response the gate sent, so a listener can tell this reply apart from an ordinary one. …ponse context.error = 'ovos.ready.not_ready' on both the decline-with-dialog and its terminal marker, matching the spec update on OpenVoiceOS/architecture#285 -- so a listener can tell this reply apart from an ordinary one and knows why it was declined. Right after a restart IntentService.status can report ready while padatious is still 'compiling in background, serving last compiled state in the meantime' -- a stale state on a fresh process, since there is no earlier compiled state to serve. A misroute landed in that exact window (OpenVoiceOS/ovos-core#1027): the orchestrator's own process status cannot distinguish it. padatious already tracks this internally (_reported_all_compiled); this puts it on the bus as ovos.pipeline.warm_state ({pipeline_id, warm}): cold announced once at construction (before any registration can arrive), warm announced once every configured language's first compile is done. A later registration that makes a container dirty again does NOT announce cold a second time -- it already has a usable compiled state to serve, the case this signal exists to distinguish FROM cold. Proposed at OpenVoiceOS/architecture#285 (OVOS-READY-1); reference aggregation in OpenVoiceOS/ovos-core#1028. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

i don't think a plugin should ever lose its readiness state, if it has all skills installed on boot, it is ready if a new skill is installed we may have latency for the new skill to kick in, but this doesnt make a pipeline unready, it still can serve all skills from the time it last reported ready... a pipeline may gain new functionality (intents) but not really lose previous functionality, reporting not-ready would be a lie and introduce complexity in the whole system |

Reworked to the model on OpenVoiceOS/ovos-core#1028: ready is the orchestrator's own READY status, reached once every configured pipeline is loaded (pipelines are loading or loaded, no cold), plus a one-time skills condition on answering. The ovos.ready topics and the per-plugin warm report are removed. |

do we need a state/bus topic for "failed to load" instead?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
I don't think it needs one. A pipeline that fails to load can't match, so waiting for it would leave the orchestrator unready for ever; the orchestrator treats it as not configured and reports the failure the way it reports any other error. §2 now says that in one paragraph and defines no topic. If you would rather the spec say what an operator can observe, that would belong with the error reporting of whichever spec owns it, not here.

Proposal, not a merge request we expect to land unreviewed -- per @JarbasAl's invitation on OpenVoiceOS/ovos-core#1027.
What this proposes
A readiness state the orchestrator tracks during boot (an
ovos.readynamespace:ovos.ready.stateon transitions,ovos.ready.queryfor a late subscriber), and one requirement on OVOS-PIPELINE-1's utterance lifecycle: while unready, an utterance does not enter the pipeline loop at all. Instead it gets a short, localized "still starting" dialog response and the normal terminal event (ovos.utterance.handled) -- a decline-with-dialog, not a silent drop or an error. This is the owner's own design from the issue thread, written up as a spec addition. Why
Measured in production (11-language hub, details on the issue): right after a restart, a pipeline's bounded
matchcall (OVOS-PIPELINE-1 §4.4) can exceed its bound from boot contention alone -- nothing wrong with the utterance, nothing wrong with the plugin, just GIL contention from everything else still loading. The call is declined as designed, and the loop falls through to the next pipeline, which can match a mid-conversation utterance like a bare "yes" to an unrelated literal entity instead of continuing the conversation it belonged to. @JarbasAl's comment on the issue: utterances shouldn't be handled before the orchestrator is actually ready at all. Raisingmatch_timeoutonly narrows the race; it doesn't remove the window a single utterance can land in.Scope
This is deliberately small: one new namespace, one new requirement on an existing lifecycle, backward compatible with
mycroft.readyvia the one-cycle removal window VERSIONING.md already describes. It does not touch OVOS-CONVERSE-1 or any individual pipeline's own contract.A reference implementation in ovos-core and a before/after production measurement are tracked on OpenVoiceOS/ovos-core#1027 and will be linked here once posted.
