feat: decline an utterance with a dialog instead of the pipeline loop while unready (OVOS-READY-1 reference) - #1028
Conversation
… pipeline loop while unready Right after a restart, a pipeline's bounded match call (OVOS-PIPELINE-1 §4.4) can legally exceed its bound from boot contention alone -- nothing wrong with the utterance, nothing wrong with the plugin -- get declined as designed, and fall through to the next pipeline. For a mid- conversation utterance (a bare "yes") that can match an unrelated literal entity instead of continuing the conversation it belonged to. Measured in production: OpenVoiceOS#1027. handle_utterance now checks IntentService.status (already tracked, ProcessStatus.check_ready()) right after the existing malformed-carrier guard. While not ready, no transformer, no language disambiguation, no pipeline runs: a short, localized "still starting" dialog is spoken and the one terminal event (ovos.utterance.handled) a caller is owed is emitted, same shape as the existing carrier-drop branch just above it. Spec proposal for the general case: OpenVoiceOS/architecture#285 (OVOS-READY-1). This is the reference implementation against the existing in-process ProcessState.READY signal, not the full ovos.ready bus namespace the spec proposes -- scoped to what one service can verify and measure on its own. Also fixes test_session2_intake.py's test_pushed_named_session_does_not_mutate_the_open_round: it builds a real IntentService via __init__ (preload_pipelines=False) and never marked it ready, so it now hits the new decline branch instead of dispatching -- added the set_ready() a running service has by the time it is doing real work. Correction, see my latest comment on #1027: this gates on |
… per get_message_lang Correction after the production timeline posted on OpenVoiceOS#1027: the misroute happened >20s after both IntentService.status and 'Skills Manager is ready' were already true, while padatious was still serving its last compiled state on a process that had never finished a first compile. check_ready() cannot see that window. PipelineWarmTracker aggregates each pipeline plugin's own ovos.pipeline.warm_state report (OpenVoiceOS/ovos-padatious-pipeline- plugin#179 is the first producer); a plugin that never reports one counts as warm by default. The gate now declines while EITHER the process isn't ready OR a reporting pipeline is still cold, superseding the status-only gate from the previous commit. Also: the decline branch now resolves language through get_message_lang (data -> context -> session -> configured default) instead of a data/context-only fallback, so a session-only language (no explicit per-utterance lang field) gets its own dialog instead of silently falling back to English (CodeRabbit). A class-level _pipeline_warm default (None) follows the file's existing idiom for IntentService.__new__-constructed test doubles, so the many tests that bypass __init__ keep working without each one needing to construct a tracker. 722 unittest tests pass (8 in test_ready_gate.py, up from 4). Reworked per the #1027 correction: gates on an aggregate of each pipeline's own warm/cold report (PipelineWarmTracker), not process status, and resolves the decline's language through get_message_lang. See the updated PR description for the full correction and OpenVoiceOS/ovos-padatious-pipeline-plugin#179 for the first producer of the warm-state signal this consumes. |
…ponse context.error = 'ovos.ready.not_ready' on both the decline-with-dialog and its terminal marker, matching the spec update on OpenVoiceOS/architecture#285 -- so a listener can tell this reply apart from an ordinary one and knows why it was declined. Right after a restart IntentService.status can report ready while padatious is still 'compiling in background, serving last compiled state in the meantime' -- a stale state on a fresh process, since there is no earlier compiled state to serve. A misroute landed in that exact window (OpenVoiceOS/ovos-core#1027): the orchestrator's own process status cannot distinguish it. padatious already tracks this internally (_reported_all_compiled); this puts it on the bus as ovos.pipeline.warm_state ({pipeline_id, warm}): cold announced once at construction (before any registration can arrive), warm announced once every configured language's first compile is done. A later registration that makes a container dirty again does NOT announce cold a second time -- it already has a usable compiled state to serve, the case this signal exists to distinguish FROM cold. Proposed at OpenVoiceOS/architecture#285 (OVOS-READY-1); reference aggregation in OpenVoiceOS/ovos-core#1028. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…e has no still-starting dialog OVOS-READY-1 section 3: an implementation with no localization for the session's language MUST play the error sound, never a dialog in the wrong language. Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
Warm pipelines were not enough on a canary hub: padatious was warm at about 80 s and the skills kept registering until about 125 s, so a bare "yes" in the middle of a game could still reach an unrelated skill. The gate now waits on one aggregate, ReadinessTracker: every pipeline that reports a warm state is warm, and the skill manager has emitted mycroft.skills.initialized. That event is latched, so a skill installed or reloaded later never turns a ready system back into a not-ready one. An intent service that starts after the skill manager finished asks mycroft.skills.is_ready once at startup. Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>

this is wrong, otherwise why is ProcessStatus there to begin with?

the ProcessStatus of intent service should only become ready when pipelines are ready.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Agreed on the model, changed in 521dfa1. IntentService.status now only reaches READY once no pipeline is loading (_set_ready_when_loaded); a plugin that loads after its constructor announces ovos.pipeline.loading / ovos.pipeline.loaded, any other counts as loaded. The warm/cold tracker is gone and the gate checks status.check_ready().
One thing I could not fold into READY: the compile of skill registrations. The skill manager polls mycroft.intents.is_ready before it loads any skill (wait_for_intent_service), and padatious only starts compiling when the first registration arrives, so a READY that waited for it would never come. That window is covered by a second condition on answering: the skill manager's first load is done and no pipeline is loading, opened once and never closed. Question: should that second condition live in the skills ProcessStatus instead (skills READY only after the pipelines absorbed the first load), so the gate is just the two statuses? I did the gate version because it touches nothing else.

maybe we should revert this change in padatious, seems it snowballed into this whole warm/cold thing, i should have paid more attention reviewing that...
There was a problem hiding this comment.
I looked at which change that is: the background compile that serves the last compiled state (ovos-padatious-pipeline-plugin#118 / #124). I would keep it. Without it a match call compiles on the match path, blocks past its bound, is declined and falls through to the next pipeline, which is the original misroute in #1027, and it also blocked the bus getters. The warm/cold report itself (ovos-padatious-pipeline-plugin#179, still open) is reduced to plain loading/loaded, emitted when the trainer starts and when it goes idle. If you would rather have padatious report nothing, the gate here still works through the skills condition alone but the window after the first skill load is no longer covered; your call.

Update: the padatious side is now OpenVoiceOS/ovos-padatious-pipeline-plugin#180 (loading/loaded only); the big PR it was part of is split into #180 to #185.

What changed
IntentService.statusreachesREADYonly once no pipeline plugin is loading. A pipeline that finishes loading after its constructor announcesovos.pipeline.loading/ovos.pipeline.loaded(pipeline_id); one that does not announce anything counts as loaded.handle_utterancedeclines an utterance with a short, localized "still starting" dialog (or the error sound when there is no dialog in the session's language) and still emitsovos.utterance.handled, until the service isREADY, the skill manager has finished loading its initial skills (mycroft.skills.initialized, ormycroft.skills.is_readyat startup) and no pipeline is loading. That last condition opens once and stays open: a skill installed or a retrain later does not stop the service answering.intents.ready_gate.skills_required: falseturns the skills condition off for a deployment with no skill manager. Why
A bare "yes" in the middle of a conversation can be matched to an unrelated literal entity while the pipelines are still absorbing skill registrations right after a restart. Measured: #1027.
Consumers of READY
READYis delayed only by a pipeline that announcesloadingbefore the plugin load step ends. Padatious announces on a registration, which arrives afterREADY(skills are not started until the intent service isREADY), so with the current pluginsmycroft.readyis not moved. MakingREADYwait for the compile of skill registrations would never complete: the skill manager pollsmycroft.intents.is_readybefore loading any skill. See the discussion on this PR.Spec
OpenVoiceOS/architecture#285 (OVOS-READY-1), aligned to the same model.
Tests
test_ready_gate.py: decline while a pipeline is loading, while skills are loading, language handling, the answering latch, status READY held back by a loading pipeline. Full unittest suite passes (733), ruff reports nothing new.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
