Summary

  • Correct the core README to use the actual ControllerHub API and describe IDs as caller-assigned logical identifiers.
  • Add a typed, runnable hub example in the already typechecked examples/basic-dry-run project.
  • Reserve IDs while controller creation is in flight, reject concurrent duplicate additions, and release the reservation if creation fails.
  • Test sequential and concurrent duplicate rejection, retry after failed creation, ID reuse after disconnectAll, and independent per-controller button state.

Closes #27.

Evidence and scope

Cycle 5 selected this bounded contract and lifecycle fix after a current-main documentation/API audit. Public reports from other projects describe controller ownership failures, but do not establish prevalence or an OpenController host-integration defect. This PR does not add physical-device discovery, host slot identity, native adapter sharing, or cross-platform reconnect.

Acceptance and validation

  • The README example uses hub.add, hub.get, and hub.disconnectAll.
  • Its typed counterpart is included in the root TypeScript build and runs successfully.
  • Duplicate IDs are rejected even when additions overlap; failed creation does not permanently reserve the ID.
  • disconnectAll() permits reusing an ID, and multi-controller state changes remain isolated.
  • Builder reports: bun test packages/core/src/__tests__ (62 passed), bun run typecheck, bun run examples/basic-dry-run/controller-hub.ts, bun run release:check, and git diff --check passed.

Dependency

Cycle 5 decision PR #31 merged into main at c0b1a2f1b592f17d1ae0d4bc30491f14972aa910. This PR now targets main directly.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Controller hubs now reject duplicate IDs, including IDs being created concurrently, and release reserved IDs when creation fails.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified that hub IDs are caller-assigned, and that disconnecting all controllers clears the hub so IDs can be reused.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for ID conflicts, reuse after disconnecting, creation failures, and keeping controller state isolated between players.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

ControllerHub now reserves logical IDs during asynchronous controller creation and releases each reservation when creation finishes. Tests cover duplicate IDs, failed creation, ID reuse after disconnectAll, and independent controller state. The README and dry-run example use the hub’s public API.

Changes

ControllerHub logical ID lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
ID reservation and lifecycle tests
packages/core/src/hub.ts, packages/core/src/__tests__/controller.test.ts
ControllerHub.add rejects IDs that are stored or pending and clears pending reservations after creation attempts. Tests cover concurrent and sequential duplicates, reuse after disconnectAll, recovery after creation failure, and independent controller state.
Hub usage examples and ID documentation
packages/core/README.md, examples/basic-dry-run/controller-hub.ts
The examples add controllers with hub.add and retrieve them with hub.get. The README describes caller-assigned logical IDs and notes that disconnectAll() clears the hub.

Keep pending adds within disconnectAll cleanup.

If disconnectAll() runs while createController(options) is pending, it can clear the hub before Line 24 inserts the new controller. The hub then contains a connected controller after disconnectAll() returns, and the caller cannot reuse that ID as documented. Track pending creation in disconnectAll(), or invalidate and disconnect controllers that finish after cleanup begins. Add a test for this ordering.
