Closes #1981
Closes #1982

Ask Esie

Esie answers in chat, which needs a login, so none of these show for logged-out visitors:

  • Navbar: an Ask Esie button with Esie's face next to the docs icon (desktop). Below the xl breakpoint it shows the face only.
  • Sidebar: an Ask Esie item after FAQ. The sidebar is shared by mobile and desktop.
  • Chats: Esie is pinned on top of the channel list.
    • Once a conversation with Esie exists, it is that conversation, listed once.
    • Before that, the row starts one.

All of them open /chats?dm=esie. That link now starts the conversation again when followed a second time: the chat list stays mounted across chats, so its "already started" marker used to swallow the next click.

Messages to Esie do not count toward the DM fan-out limit. Esie's chat user id is looked up once and left out of the recipients. Everyone else in a group with Esie still counts.

The avatar is a new still crop of the Esie master, avatar in scripts/esie/build.mjs. Only the blink moves, since the image sits on every page.

Official accounts

  • Badge: Esie and @ecency get an Official label in the chat list, the conversation header, message headers and the profile card.
    • It is a text label, so it never reads as the Pro seal.
    • Message headers take it from the real chat user record, never from post props, so a webhook or bot post naming esie gets no badge.
  • Lookalike names: another account whose display name reads as Esie or Ecency shows its @username instead. This applies to names, group titles, mentions and people search.
    • It catches spaced-out spellings, digits, and Cyrillic, Greek or small-capital lookalike letters.
    • A word has to start with the name, so "Decency" and "Jane Siegel" are left alone.

Typing indicator

The website did not show "esie is typing" while mobile did.

  • Cause: the indicator only names people the page has already loaded from messages. Someone typing with no message in the loaded page was dropped. Esie answering the first question in a new DM is the common case.
  • Fix: those people are now looked up, the same way unknown message authors already are.
  • Also changed:
    • Typing is sent from the first keystroke instead of after a pause, so someone typing steadily shows up on the other side.
    • Typing into a dropped connection retries it at most every 5 s.
    • Typing clears as soon as that person's message arrives.

Tests

  • New specs:
    • official accounts and the lookalike check
    • message header badge source
    • navbar and sidebar gating
    • pinned row and repeat ?dm=
    • fan-out exemption and its lookup cache
    • typing lookup, clear and reconnect limit
  • Each new guard was broken on purpose and a spec failed.
  • Full suite passes, as do lint and the icon audits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an Ask Esie link to the navigation and pinned Esie in chats, with direct-message access.
    • Added official-account badges for Esie and Ecency across profiles and chat.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved chat name handling to reduce impersonation with lookalike display names.
    • Improved typing indicators, including reconnection behavior and handling of users whose details haven’t loaded.
    • Excluded Esie from private-channel message fan-out.

… who is typing

Esie, the AI helper, answers in chat, so every way in is for logged-in users only:
- an Ask Esie button next to the docs icon in the navbar, with Esie's face
- an Ask Esie item after FAQ in the sidebar
- Esie pinned on top of the chat list, so it can be asked before any conversation exists

Messages to Esie do not count toward the DM fan-out limit. The ?dm= link now starts a
conversation again when followed a second time, since the chat list stays mounted.

Esie and @ecency get an Official label in the chat list, the conversation header, message
headers and the profile card. The label comes from the real chat account, never from post
props. Someone else's display name that reads as Esie or Ecency (spaced out, digits, Cyrillic
or Greek lookalike letters) is shown as their @username instead, in names, group titles,
mentions and search.

Typing: someone typing who has no message on the loaded page yet, such as Esie answering the
first question, was dropped from the indicator; they are now looked up and named. Typing is
sent from the first keystroke instead of after a pause, and cleared when the message arrives.

High-Level Assessment

The following are alternative approaches to this PR:

1. Server-backed official account metadata
  • ➕ Provides one managed source of truth as the official account list grows.
  • ➖ Requires chat-server metadata and trust-boundary changes for two currently fixed accounts.
2. Preload conversation participants for typing
  • ➕ Could name a DM participant before their first typing event.
  • ➖ Does not cover unknown group participants and adds eager lookups.

Recommendation: Keep the shared, small official-account allowlist and on-demand typing-user lookup for this scope. Server-side fan-out enforcement is appropriate; client-only exemption would not protect the limit.

Remediation recommended

1. A new chat spec keeps explicit any ✓ Resolved
Description
The Next.js Link mock annotates its props as any in the newly added chat specification. This
weakens type checking for the mock and allows incorrectly shaped link props to reach the rendered
test subject.
Code

apps/web/src/specs/features/chat/chats-client-esie-pinned.spec.tsx[20]

+  default: ({ href, children, ...rest }: any) => (
Evidence
The new chat spec explicitly declares the mocked Link component props as any, which fails the
requirement to avoid new explicit any usage.

Rule 2668119: Disallow implicit and any types in new TypeScript code
apps/web/src/specs/features/chat/chats-client-esie-pinned.spec.tsx[19-24]

## Issue description
The newly added Next.js `Link` mock uses an explicit `any` annotation for its props, weakening type safety in new TypeScript code.
## Fix Focus Areas
- apps/web/src/specs/features/chat/chats-client-esie-pinned.spec.tsx[20-20]
## Recommended Fix
Replace `any` with a specific link-props type, such as the appropriate anchor or Next.js `Link` prop type, while preserving the mock's `href`, `children`, and remaining attributes.

2. Profile badges have no regression test ✓ Resolved
Description
ProfileCard now renders OfficialBadge for the account name, but no added or updated spec renders
the profile card and verifies that behavior. A lookalike or official account reaching this profile
path can therefore regress without a test detecting the missing or incorrect badge.
Code

apps/web/src/app/(dynamicPages)/profile/[username]/_components/profile-card/index.tsx[R119-120]

       <ProBadge username={account.name} />
+            <OfficialBadge username={account.name} />
Evidence
The PR adds OfficialBadge to ProfileCard, while the added official-account spec only tests
helper functions and post-author classification; repository search found no profile-card spec
covering this new rendering path.

Rule 2667972: Require tests for all new functional code paths
apps/web/src/app/(dynamicPages)/profile/[username]/_components/profile-card/index.tsx[117-120]
apps/web/src/specs/features/chat/official-accounts.spec.ts[52-67]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The profile card adds official-account badge rendering without a corresponding test that exercises the profile-card UI path.
## Fix Focus Areas
- apps/web/src/app/(dynamicPages)/profile/[username]/_components/profile-card/index.tsx[117-120]
- apps/web/src/specs/features/chat/official-accounts.spec.ts[52-67]
## Recommended Fix
Add a profile-card spec that renders an official account and a non-official lookalike, then assert that the official badge appears only for the real official account. Ensure the test fails if the new `OfficialBadge` wiring is removed or receives the wrong username.

3. Typing during reconnection goes unseen ✓ Resolved
Description
sendTypingDebounced calls ws.connect() and immediately calls ws.sendTyping(channelId),
although the socket is still connecting and sendTyping discards events until it is connected. When
someone begins a short message on a dropped connection, that first event is lost; further attempts
to reconnect from keystrokes are limited by the new five-second gate.
Code

apps/web/src/features/chat/hooks/use-channel-websocket.ts[R198-202]

+      if (now - lastReconnectKickRef.current < TYPING_RECONNECT_INTERVAL) return;
+      lastReconnectKickRef.current = now;
+      ws.connect();
+    }
+    ws.sendTyping(channelId);
Evidence
connect() changes the state to connecting before the socket opens, whereas sendTyping() returns
for every state other than connected. The changed sender does not wait for the connection before
sending.

apps/web/src/features/chat/mattermost-websocket.ts[198-225]
apps/web/src/features/chat/mattermost-websocket.ts[855-858]

- apps/web/src/features/chat/mattermost-websocket.ts[855-858]

4. First chat posts duplicate admin lookups ✓ Resolved
Description
getDmFanoutExemptUserIds caches Esie's ID only after awaiting lookupMattermostUser, without
sharing an in-flight lookup. Concurrent DM and group posts before that first response each make an
admin request and wait for it, multiplying upstream traffic and adding lookup latency to every
affected post.
Code

apps/web/src/server/mattermost.ts[R688-691]

+    if (Date.now() - (dmFanoutExemptMissingAt.get(username) ?? 0) < DM_FANOUT_EXEMPT_RECHECK_MS) continue;
+    try {
+      const user = await lookupMattermostUser(username);
+      if (user?.id) dmFanoutExemptIds.set(username, user.id);
Evidence
Each post invokes the helper, and the helper leaves its cache empty throughout the awaited admin
request. All requests arriving in that interval can independently enter the same lookup.

## Fix Focus Areas
- apps/web/src/server/mattermost.ts[674-698]
## Recommended Fix
Cache an in-flight lookup promise alongside the resolved ID so concurrent calls await one request. Clear the pending promise after completion, preserving the existing retry behavior for failures and missing users.

Informational

5. Typing indicator drops when the typist posts in another chat ✓ Resolved
Description
The new onPosted handler in useChannelWebSocket removes post.user_id from typingUsers
without checking which channel the post is in. MattermostWebSocket.handlePosted calls
onPostedCallback for posts in every channel the viewer belongs to, so when someone typing here
posts in another shared channel or group, their "is typing" disappears here until their next
throttled typing event arrives.
Code

apps/web/src/features/chat/hooks/use-channel-websocket.ts[R94-99]

+ // their message is here, so they are no longer typing it
+          setTypingUsers((prev) => {
+            if (!prev.has(post.user_id)) return prev;
+            const next = new Map(prev);
+            next.delete(post.user_id);
+            return next;
Evidence
handlePosted reads the post's channel from the broadcast but passes every parsed post to
onPostedCallback without filtering, unlike the typing handler, which checks `channelId ===
this.channelId`. The new clearing code therefore runs for posts from any channel.

apps/web/src/features/chat/mattermost-websocket.ts[461-479]
apps/web/src/features/chat/mattermost-websocket.ts[539-539]
apps/web/src/features/chat/hooks/use-channel-websocket.ts[93-100]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The onPosted handler clears a user's typing state for posts in any channel, because the websocket forwards every post to the callback.
## Fix Focus Areas
- apps/web/src/features/chat/hooks/use-channel-websocket.ts[94-100]
## Recommended Fix
Only delete from `typingUsers` when `post.channel_id === channelId`. You can read the channel id from a ref, or from the effect closure, since the effect is keyed on channelId.

6. "No channels" shows under the pinned Esie chat ✓ Resolved
Description
The empty-list message now checks listedChannels.length, and listedChannels leaves out
esieChannel, which is rendered separately above it. A user whose only conversation is with Esie
sees that conversation and "No channels assigned yet." together.
Code

apps/web/src/app/chats/_components/chats-client.tsx[R706-708]

+            {listedChannels.map(renderChannelRow)}
+            {!listedChannels.length && !channelsLoading && (
         <div className="text-sm text-[--text-muted]">{i18next.t("chat.no-channels")}</div>
Evidence
listedChannels filters out esieChannel, so it is empty when Esie is the only conversation. The
empty-state message only checks listedChannels, while renderChannelRow(esieChannel) still
renders above it.

apps/web/src/app/chats/_components/chats-client.tsx[175-183]
apps/web/src/app/chats/_components/chats-client.tsx[680-710]

Agent prompt

## Issue description
The empty-state message appears even when the Esie conversation row is shown, because it checks `listedChannels`, which excludes Esie.
## Fix Focus Areas
- apps/web/src/app/chats/_components/chats-client.tsx[706-709]
## Recommended Fix
Change the condition to `!sortedChannels.length && !channelsLoading`. If the message should also stay hidden next to the pinned 'start a chat with Esie' link, reword or drop it for that case.

7. Starting a group with Esie still uses up DM budget ✓ Resolved
Description
The group-creation route passes every invited member, including Esie, to checkDmFanout and its
recipients.length > limit check, while the posts route filters out fan-out-exempt IDs. Creating a
group with Esie can record Esie in the sender’s window or be rejected at the limit, even though
subsequent posts to that group exclude Esie.
Code

apps/web/src/app/api/mattermost/channels/[channelId]/posts/route.ts[R418-422]

+      const [exempt, allRecipients] = await Promise.all([
+        getDmFanoutExemptUserIds(),
+        getPrivateChannelRecipientIds(channel, currentUser.id, token)
+      ]);
+      const recipients = allRecipients.filter((id) => !exempt.has(id));
Evidence
The posts route filters exempt IDs before checking DM fan-out, but the separate group-creation route
builds recipients from all invited members, applies its size check to that list, and passes the
same list to checkDmFanout. Thus Esie remains subject to the group-creation check and can be
recorded in the Redis fan-out window.

apps/web/src/app/api/mattermost/group/route.ts[128-163]
apps/web/src/server/chat-dm-fanout.ts[1-19]
apps/web/src/app/api/mattermost/channels/[channelId]/posts/route.ts[416-426]

## Issue description

- apps/web/src/app/api/mattermost/group/route.ts[128-148]
- apps/web/src/app/api/mattermost/channels/[channelId]/posts/route.ts[418-426]
## Recommended Fix
Resolve exempt IDs with `getDmFanoutExemptUserIds()` during group creation and exclude them from both the fan-out size check and the recipients passed to `checkDmFanout`. Keep the full member list for creating the Mattermost group and for any Mattermost member-limit check.

Summary

Adds Ask Esie links, pins Esie in chats, and marks official accounts.

  • Signed-in users can find Esie in navigation and chats.
  • Chat marks official accounts and hides names that imitate them.
  • Chat shows typing users it has not seen in messages yet.
  • Asking Esie no longer uses a DM fan-out slot.

Walkthrough

This PR adds Esie navigation and chat-list access, excludes Esie from private-channel DM fan-out checks, and identifies official chat accounts across display names and UI badges. It also changes typing-event handling and resolves users who are missing from typing state.

Changes: Official Identity and Esie Access

Layer / File(s) Summary
Official account recognition and safe names
apps/web/src/features/chat/official-accounts.ts, apps/web/src/features/chat/format-utils.ts, apps/web/src/features/chat/components/mention-token.tsx, apps/web/src/features/chat/components/message-input.tsx, apps/web/src/app/chats/_components/chats-client.tsx, apps/web/src/features/chat/hooks/use-channel-metadata.ts, apps/web/src/specs/features/chat/official-accounts.spec.ts
Adds recognition for Esie and Ecency, detects lookalike display names, and uses safe-name helpers in chat display paths. Tests cover account recognition, display names, and post authors.
Official badges in chat and profile views
apps/web/src/features/chat/components/official-badge.tsx, apps/web/src/features/chat/channel-header.tsx, apps/web/src/features/chat/components/message-item.tsx, apps/web/src/app/chats/_components/chats-client.tsx, apps/web/src/app/(dynamicPages)/profile/[username]/_components/profile-card/index.tsx, apps/web/src/features/i18n/locales/en-US.json, apps/web/src/specs/features/chat/official-accounts.spec.ts
Adds a translated badge for official accounts and renders it in channel headers, message headers, chat rows, and profile cards.
Ask Esie navigation and pinned chat
apps/web/src/features/shared/navbar/*, apps/web/src/app/chats/_components/chats-client.tsx, apps/web/src/features/i18n/locales/en-US.json, scripts/esie/build.mjs, apps/web/src/specs/features/chat/chats-client-esie-pinned.spec.tsx, apps/web/src/specs/features/shared/navbar-ask-esie.spec.tsx
Adds logged-in navbar and sidebar links to Ask Esie. The chat list pins an existing Esie DM or links to Ask Esie when no DM exists. The DM target can start again after it is cleared.
Esie DM fan-out exemption
apps/web/src/server/mattermost.ts, apps/web/src/app/api/mattermost/channels/[channelId]/posts/route.ts, apps/web/src/specs/api/mattermost-chat-recipients.spec.ts, apps/web/src/specs/api/mattermost-dm-fanout-ordering.spec.ts
Looks up and caches Esie’s Mattermost user ID. Private-channel fan-out checks exclude exempt IDs before applying the existing limit. Tests cover lookup caching and recipient filtering.

Chat Typing State

Layer / File(s) Summary
Typing events and user resolution
apps/web/src/features/chat/hooks/use-channel-websocket.ts, apps/web/src/features/chat/mattermost-channel-view.tsx, apps/web/src/specs/features/chat/use-channel-websocket-typing.spec.tsx
Typing events send immediately. Reconnect attempts are limited to one per five seconds while the WebSocket is inactive. Posted messages clear the author's typing state, and the channel view resolves unknown typing-user IDs.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 6e2fd

The change is mostly safe to merge. A short message may lose its typing indicator while the socket is connecting. A display name containing an invisible character can still look like "Esie" and avoid the lookalike protection. Both are limited in impact and can be fixed with small edits.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The changes implement the coding requirements in [#1981] and [#1982]. [#1981] is covered by the authenticated navbar and sidebar links, the Esie pinned chat row, repeat dm=esie handling, the fan-out exemption with cached lookup, and English i18n strings. Tests cover these behaviors. [#1982] is covered by the fixed esie and ecency account list, the text OfficialBadge in chat rows, channel headers, message headers, and profile cards, and lookalike-name fallback handling. Message badges use the resolved chat user record and exclude webhook, override, unknown, and system posts. The separate mobile requirement does not apply because the issue marks it as separate.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The pull request includes typing-indicator changes that are not connected to [#1981] or [#1982]. These changes add unknown-typer lookup, first-keystroke sends, reconnect throttling, message-based clearing, and related tests. The linked issues do not require typing-indicator behavior.

Resolution

Remove the typing-indicator implementation and tests from this pull request, or link an active issue that requires these changes.

- Around line 200-202: Update the typing flow in the visible websocket hook so a
typing event is queued when the socket is connecting and sent once the
connection opens, including during the initial connection. Preserve the existing
immediate send behavior when the socket is already open, and ensure the queued
event is sent only once.

Review comments at @apps/web/src/features/chat/official-accounts.ts:
- Around line 29-32: Update the normalization in `impersonatesOfficialAccount`
to remove invisible formatting characters before `nameWords` tokenizes the
display name, so `Es\u200Bie` is checked as “Esie” rather than as separate
words; add a regression case for this name.

- Invisible characters (zero-width space, joiners, soft hyphen, direction marks) are removed
  before checking a display name, so "Esie" no longer slips past as "Esie"
- Esie no longer counts toward the fan-out limit when a group is created with it, matching
  the posts route; it is still added to the group
- Concurrent first posts share one Esie lookup
- Typing clears only when the person posts in the open chat, not in another one
- Typing from while the connection was still opening is sent once it is up
- "No channels" no longer shows under a list that holds only the Esie conversation
- Tests for the badge on the profile card, and a typed Link mock
