bench: the corpus open-loop ceiling is the replay server's accept thread and listen backlog - #1340
Locates the corpus open-loop run's ceiling (#1159) and adds the instrumentation and options that located it. Bench tooling only: nothing here ships in fcvm or fc-agent, and no CI or release gate reads these files.
Result
The replay server (corpus_serve.py) accepts every connection, and runs the TLS handshake for it, in one thread (wrap_socket on the listening socket does the handshake inside accept()), behind socketserver's listen backlog of 5. The guest opens a new connection per request (HTTP/1.0 replies): about 52 per page load. Its duration_ms starts after both, which is why the access log looked flat (median 0.6 ms) while navigation grew. Measured on a c8g.metal-48xl, 4 guest vCPUs, the s13 configuration (results/scale-ceiling-20261026/, numbers in REVIEW.md):

5.6: 3,357 of 3,360 (3 harness probe failures); 8.4 and above: harness limits end the run (see below)
So the s13 ceiling was the replay's accept thread and listen queue, not the host (it was at most 6% busy) and not the memory server. The default options are unchanged, so existing records stay comparable. Above about 4.2 per path every failure was one of the harness's own limits: inotify_init1 EMFILE (one inotify instance per request in flight against fs.inotify.max_user_instances=128), descriptor exhaustion, or the per-request Firecracker cgroup probe ("pid N is outside run cgroup"). With the sysctl at 65,536 the static page held 5.6 and failed 399 of 1,008 requests at 8.4, 804 of 805 failures there from the cgroup probe. So the host's ceiling is not established above 5.6 (static page) or 4.2 (corpus, handshake fix). Still open: those harness limits, what limits the corpus above 4.2 once they are out of the way, and a 62-request burst at 2 vCPUs lost to the cgroup probe.
Changes
corpus_serve.py: --listen-log (one row a second per busy listener: connections accepted, time inside accept(), handshake time, handler-thread start, requests and their handler time, active handlers; plus a kernel row with ListenOverflows/ListenDrops deltas and the accept-queue depth), --backlog N, --tls-handshake-in-handler (handshake in the connection's thread, 10 s limit). Tests: test_corpus_serve_listen.py (12), including a stalled client that blocks every other handshake by default and no longer does with the option.
corpus_campaign.sh: starts the replay with --listen-log and $CORPUS_SERVE_ARGS; SCALE_URL_OVERRIDE changes the scale run's URL only. Tests in test_campaign.py (2).
reqscale_stages.py: per-rate stage medians from a scale run joined to the listener log through the host-samples clocks. Tests: test_reqscale_stages.py.
Harness defects the runs hit, each with a test that fails without the change:
reqbench.py: fcvm saves a clone's state with its owner PID before the network is configured; find_state returned that state and every request failed with "no usable host-side IP" (CloneEndpointWait).
reqbench.sh diag: a request the page cancelled before any network timing (Chromium 156, www.elmundo.es) counted as a request naming no remote address and failed 3 of 5 corpus diags.
reqscale.py: the host sampler read the cgroup leaves one after another and refused the run when a pid moved between two reads (stopped two runs).
results/scale-ceiling-20261026/: summary.json, commands.txt, the listener logs. The raw requests.jsonl of these runs is not committed (30 to 90 MB each).
Red, then green
New tests were run against the previous source before the change: test_corpus_serve_listen (12 errors on the old corpus_serve.py), test_campaign listen-log and SCALE_URL_OVERRIDE tests (failed on the old script), CloneEndpointWait (4 errors), the cancelled-request diag test (one no_remote_ip violation), ContinuousAccounting mid-move case (pid 77 appears in both driver and file leaf cgroups).
$ make test-chromium

… and --tls-handshake-in-handler
The access log's duration_ms starts when a handler thread parses the request line, so
the accept queue, the accept thread (which also runs the TLS handshake) and the handler
thread's start are outside it. --listen-log writes one row a second per busy listener
(accepts, time inside accept(), handshake time, thread start delay, requests and their
handler time, peak active handlers) and one kernel row (TcpExt ListenOverflows/ListenDrops
deltas and the listeners' accept-queue depth). --backlog sets the listen() queue
(socketserver's default is 5). --tls-handshake-in-handler runs the handshake in the
connection's thread with a 10 s limit.
corpus_campaign.sh starts the server with --listen-log in the run directory and
CORPUS_SERVE_ARGS, and SCALE_URL_OVERRIDE replaces the scale run's URL only.
Tests: test_corpus_serve_listen.py (12), two in test_campaign.py. Each fails on the
previous corpus_serve.py / corpus_campaign.sh.
fcvm saves a restored clone's state with its owner PID before it allocates the
loopback IP and configures the network. On a restored WebKit golden the first save
had loopback_ip, host_ip and guest_ip null and the address followed 15 ms later.
find_state returns on the first save, so run_cdp_request and the noop arm called
clone_cdp_endpoint on it and every request failed with 'no usable host-side IP in
network config' (2026-10-26 WebKit corpus run: 4 of 4 arms, first request).
wait_clone_endpoint re-reads the state when the state directory changes until it
names an address, bounded by the request deadline and by the clone process exiting.
Tests: CloneEndpointWait (4); they fail on the previous reqbench.py with
AttributeError.
…n escape
Chromium 156 renders www.elmundo.es with an iframe document request that the page
cancels 3 ms after it starts (net::ERR_ABORTED, remote_ip empty, timing null, no
status). The diag counted it as a traced request naming no remote address and failed
3 of 5 corpus diags on 2026-10-26 (1 of ~210 traced requests each), so no campaign
got past it. A cancelled request with no timing never left the browser. One that
had started connecting still has to name an address.
Test: test_a_request_the_page_cancelled_before_any_network_timing_is_not_an_escape
(fails on the previous reqbench.sh with one no_remote_ip violation).
… them
HostSampleSource.capture read the leaves one after another and refused the run when a
pid appeared in two. guardexec enters a request's leaf as the request starts, so a pid
read in the driver leaf could be read in the file leaf a moment later. It stopped the
2026-10-26 base run at burst 5 and the backlog run at burst 12 of 18 with 'pid N appears
in both driver and file leaf cgroups'. A process is in one cgroup at a time; capture now
reads every leaf again (up to 5 passes) and refuses only a pid that stays in two.
Tests: ContinuousAccounting (2); the mid-move case fails on the previous reqscale.py with
MeasurementInvalid, a pid that stays in two leaves is still refused.
…d and listen backlog (#1159)
results/scale-ceiling-20261026/: summary.json (per run and rate: request stage medians
and p95, scored requests ok and failed, navigations over 2 s, and the replay listener's
accept-thread busy share, accept time per connection, dropped connections, accept-queue peak,
handler time), commands.txt (the campaign steps), and each run's corpus-listen.log.
REVIEW.md gets the section with the numbers, a row in the run table, and the open-questions
bullet rewritten. reqscale_stages.py reports the per-connection accept time.
Default replay at 4 guest vCPUs: 43% busy accept thread at 1.40 per path, 62% at 1.87, 13,869 and 26,105
connections dropped for a full accept queue in the scoring windows, median navigation 1,072 ms at 1.87;
--backlog 1024 removes the drops and passes 2.33; --tls-handshake-in-handler leaves the accept thread under
2.5% busy and passes 2.8 (3.27 to 4.2 with 0 to 3 failed requests per rate); with the replay out of the
path 5.6 per path completes 3,357 of 3,360 and 8.4 collapses.

Walkthrough
The pull request adds replay-server listener measurements and options, a CLI for summarizing request and listener data, and benchmark records. It also updates campaign configuration and adjusts clone endpoint waiting, canceled-request diagnostics, and host cgroup sampling.
Changes: Replay listener analysis
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Listener metrics and server options bench/chromium/corpus_serve.py, bench/chromium/test_corpus_serve_listen.py
The replay server can log listener, request, handler, and kernel measurements. It also supports backlog configuration and TLS handshakes in handler threads. Tests cover metrics, options, and stalled handshakes.
Campaign configuration and log lifecycle bench/chromium/corpus_campaign.sh, bench/chromium/test_campaign.py, bench/chromium/.gitignore
The campaign passes optional server arguments, stores and cleans up the listener log, and supports a scale URL override.
Scoring-window summaries and recorded measurements bench/chromium/reqscale_stages.py, bench/chromium/test_reqscale_stages.py, bench/chromium/results/scale-ceiling-20261026/summary.json, bench/chromium/REVIEW.md, bench/chromium/AGENTS.md
The new CLI summarizes request and listener metrics within scoring windows. Tests validate the aggregates. The recorded results and review notes report listener measurements, benchmark outcomes, and limitations.
Request and host-sample handling
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Clone endpoint waits and request diagnostics bench/chromium/reqbench.py, bench/chromium/reqbench.sh, bench/chromium/test_reqbench.py
The CDP and noop paths wait for a usable clone endpoint. Diagnostics exclude canceled requests that have no network timing. Tests cover both changes.

Issue 1173: The request-path and host-sample changes include harness updates and regression tests, which align with the issue’s stated objectives.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 68a7e
This PR only changes benchmark tooling and records. A few reported figures and diagnostics can be misleading: the ledger overstates the backlog results, unmeasured kernel drops can read as zero, and per-second accept-busy values can exceed 100%. They should be corrected before the numbers are quoted, but they do not block merging.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Direct issue [#1159] asks for phase timings, replay service-time measurements, and a static-page comparison. reqscale_stages.py adds request-stage summaries and joins them with listener metrics. corpus_serve.py adds listener, backlog, and TLS-handshake instrumentation. The campaign supports the static-page URL override. The recorded results identify the accept thread and listen backlog as the observed limit and record failed rates without claiming an unproved higher ceiling. The harness fixes and regression tests address endpoint discovery, canceled-request accounting, and transient cgroup sampling failures found during this investigation.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes remain within the benchmark investigation in [#1159]. Replay options, campaign wiring, analysis tooling, recorded results, and tests directly support measurement of the suspected serialization and failure behavior. The reqbench.py, reqbench.sh, and reqscale.py fixes correct benchmark defects that affected the reported investigation. The PR states that defaults and production paths remain unchanged.

…tify, descriptor and cgroup-probe limits
Every failed request at 5.6 per path (2 vCPUs) and at 8.4 and 6.5 per path (static page, default replay)
was either 'firecracker pid N is outside run cgroup', EMFILE on inotify_init1 (one inotify instance per
request in flight against fs.inotify.max_user_instances=128), or descriptor exhaustion. With the sysctl at
65536 the static page held 5.6 and failed 399 of 1,008 at 8.4, 804 of 805 failures there from the cgroup
probe. The text no longer calls these collapses of the host, and AGENTS.md lists the sysctl.

…cument that accept_busy is per finishing interval
Test: a kernel row without listen_overflows makes the window's totals null (fails on the previous code, which summed it as 0).
… service never began sending it
Codex and CodeRabbit (#1340): a missing timing does not show a cancelled request never left the browser,
because remote_ip and timing both come from responseReceived. cdpdrive's net trace rows now carry
sent_to_network (a Network.requestWillBeSentExtraInfo event was seen), and the diag exempts a cancelled
row with no address only when sent_to_network is false; a cancelled request the network service had begun
sending, or a row from a trace without the field, must still name an address.
Tests: test_a_row_says_whether_the_network_service_began_sending_it (test_net_trace) and
test_a_request_cancelled_before_the_network_service_sent_it_is_not_an_escape (the exempt case passes; the
'sent' and 'unknown' cases fail the diag). The reqbench test fails on the previous reqbench.sh/cdpdrive.py.
