The shared resolver prevalidates only suffixes that look numeric before content lookup. Zero, signed, non-ASCII numeral, and out-of-range suffixes return 404 even when content is stored at that address. Other suffixes under a page segment can still resolve as stored content. Positive ASCII page numbers, including leading-zero forms, remain valid.
Added regression coverage for content stored at root and nested page-word paths, an ordinal-like suffix, and invalid numeric-looking suffixes, including bare + and - signs.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Page numbers now accept only standard digits (0–9). Signed, non-ASCII, and otherwise invalid page numbers return a 404 instead of being treated as valid pagination.
Page numbers with leading zeros remain supported, and valid numbers are read in full.
Documentation
Clarified how invalid page numbers are handled, including the existing 404 behavior for numbers below one.

Walkthrough
Page-number parsing now accepts only ASCII digits. Other suffixes return not found rather than being parsed as page numbers. Resolver, site, and content API tests cover invalid suffixes; the API documentation describes the 404 behavior.
The resolver rejects page-number suffixes containing non-ASCII digits. Tests cover invalid suffixes and long digit sequences. The documentation describes the 404 response.
Site and API behavior coverage internal/publicsite/page_number_test.go, internal/server/content_values_test.go, test/features/features/content-serving.feature, internal/publicsite/canonical_address_test.go
Tests cover invalid page suffixes in site and content API requests, and Arabic-Indic digits as content addresses. Removed canonicalization tests no longer expect signed suffixes to redirect or serve listing content.
gopherium/gophenberg#491: Defines root pagination routing, which also depends on accepted page-number syntax.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #562 requires every page suffix that is not composed only of ASCII digits to return 404 in the built-in site and content API. listingAt rejects signed, non-ASCII, zero, and overflow suffixes, and positive ASCII numbers remain valid. However, listingAt returns numbered == false for ordinary suffixes such as page/about, chapter/page/intro, and page/2nd. Resolve then performs content lookup, and TestResolveLetsContentBeatARefusedPageNumber explicitly requires stored content at those paths to resolve. This does not meet the issue requirement for non-digit forms.
Resolution
Reject every suffix after the page segment unless it contains only ASCII digits and represents a valid positive page number. Apply this rule before content lookup in both the built-in site and content API. Update the tests that currently require stored content for word and ordinal suffixes.

Validate page-shaped suffixes before exact content lookup.
Resolve calls PublishedByPath before listingAt. A published item at pages/page/2 can therefore bypass the ASCII-digit validation and be returned by both public callers. Validate listingAt(address) before the content lookup.

🟡 Medium risk · Restricting page-number parsing to ASCII digits could route signed or non-ASCII suffixes to stored content or return 404 instead of an archive.
Requires positive ASCII digits for page-number addresses, so zero, signed, non-ASCII numeral, and out-of-range suffixes return 404 even when content is stored there. Resolved the early listingAt guard that 404ed stored content under any page segment, and the store no longer accepts page-suffix addresses the resolver refuses to serve. No open issues found.
✅ 2 closed✅ Bug: Early listingAt guard 404s stored content under any "page" segment
📄 internal/content/resolver.go:63-65📄 internal/content/resolver.go:149-163📄 internal/content/resolver_test.go:181-195
The new guard at resolver.go:63-65 calls listingAt before the exact-content lookup. listingAt returns ErrNotFound for every address whose second-to-last segment is page and whose last segment is anything other than a positive ASCII integer. That covers words, 0 and overflowing numbers as well as signed and non-ASCII numerals. The store lets content live at those addresses: the contenttest suite renames an item to page (renamed, err := chapter.Rename(content.PageWord)), stores a nested item titled "Page", and reserves only root page/<n> addresses. So a child published at page/about or chapter/page/intro was reachable before this commit, and now Resolve returns 404 for it without ever calling PublishedByPath. This contradicts TestResolveLetsContentBeatPagination and goes further than the PR description, which talks only about signed and non-ASCII numeral suffixes. The fix is to narrow the guard so it refuses only suffixes that look numeric but are invalid, such as a leading +/- or a Unicode digit, and let every other page/<word> address go through the content lookup. A regression test for content stored at page/about should come with it.
✅ Bug: Store accepts page-suffix addresses the resolver now never serves
📄 internal/content/resolver.go:64-68📄 internal/content/resolver.go:169-183 Resolve now returns 404 before any lookup when the segment after page passes pageNumberLike, meaning zero, a sign, or any unicode.IsNumber rune. Writes are still checked only by guardAddress/RootPagination (and by checkPaginationPaths in postgres), and those reserve only root page/{positive ASCII}. slugOf keeps every unicode.IsDigit rune, so a child titled 0, ٣ or 2 under a parent whose slug is page gets a path like pages/page/0. The store accepts and publishes it without error, but the public site and /api/content/v1/resolve then always 404 it. Items already stored at such paths were reachable before this change and now silently stop resolving. Fix: reserve these addresses on write as well. Export a predicate built on cutPageNumber/pageNumberLike and call it from guardAddress and checkPaginationPaths, and plan a migration or a warning for existing rows.
