fix(publicsite): send a post or page to its one address - #578
The built-in renderer already sends a listing page asked with a trailing slash, page 1 or a padded number to its plain address. A single post or page was never checked against that rule. /hello-world/, //hello-world and /pages/about/ were all served with a 200, and /hello-world/page/1 answered 404.
Changes:
ServeHTTP now runs the existing redirectTarget check before serving an item, not just for listings. For an item, canonicalAddress already gives / + its path. So a read with a trailing slash, repeated slashes or any other non-plain form gets a 301 to that address. As with listings, this only applies to GET and HEAD, and the query is kept.
content.Resolver has a new PagedItem method. It finds the ordinary post or page that an address with a page number hangs from (/hello-world/page/N, N ≥ 1). The renderer calls it only when Resolve has already found nothing, so a read of such an address now redirects to the item instead of returning 404. Page 0, a non-numeric page, the front page, archives and term pages behave as before. The resolve API itself still answers 404 for these addresses.
The docs for the built-in renderer and the content API now describe this behaviour.
Testing:
New table-driven tests in internal/publicsite cover trailing and repeated slashes on posts and nested pages, page numbers on items (with a kept query and a trailing slash), plain addresses and / staying at 200, page numbers that still 404, HEAD being redirected and POST not.
New unit tests cover PagedItem.
Three new scenarios in content-serving.feature go through the real chi router, including /pages//about.
The new publicsite tests fail without the change. go test ./internal/publicsite/ ./internal/content/, go test ./test/features/ -run TestContentServing and go vet pass.

Bug Fixes
The built-in renderer now redirects post and page requests with trailing or repeated slashes to their canonical addresses using a 301 redirect.
Requests for a page-number suffix on an individual post or page redirect to that item’s address. Invalid page numbers and unknown items still return 404.
Redirects apply to GET and HEAD requests, and query strings are preserved.
Documentation
Clarified that themes handle these addresses themselves, and that listings remain at the requested address when other content occupies the plain address. The content API documentation also clarifies that page-number suffixes on ordinary single items return 404.

Explanation
The title "fix(publicsite): send a post or page to its one address" matches the main change. The PR makes the built-in renderer redirect non-canonical post and page addresses (trailing slashes, repeated slashes, page-number suffixes) to the single plain address with 301 for GET and HEAD. The title names the package and the behavior, uses no file list or vague wording, and a teammate scanning history would understand the primary change. It is 55 characters, so it stays concise.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#561] Objective 1: a post or page read with a trailing slash, repeated slashes, or another non-plain form must get a 301 to its plain address for GET and HEAD, with the query kept. At head, ServeHTTP in internal/publicsite/publicsite.go calls redirectTarget for every resolved kind before rendering. For items, canonicalAddress returns "/" + Item.Path. serveRedirect copies r.URL.RawQuery. POST is not redirected. Verified in code.
[#561] Objective 2: a page number on a post or page (/<item>/page/N, N >= 1) must get a 301 to the plain item address. At head, when Resolve returns ErrNotFound, pagedItemTarget calls Resolver.PagedItem in internal/content/resolver.go. PagedItem returns the item only when the word before /page/N resolves to a KindItem. The redirect target is "/" + held.Item.Path. Resolve still returns ErrNotFound for these addresses, which matches the issue scope. Verified in code.
[#561] Objective 3: '/' stays at 200. canonicalAddress returns "/" for the root archive, so no redirect applies. Verified in code.
[#561] Negative cases: page 0, non-numeric pages, the front page (/page/N), and term pages return ErrNotFound from listingAt or PagedItem, so they do not redirect. Non-NotFound lookup errors return through serveError (500). Verified in code.
The author reports tests for these cases. I did not run them or read the test files at head. The issue does not require specific tests, so this does not change the verdict.

Explanation
Each changed area supports issue #561. Code: publicsite.go (redirectTarget for items, pagedItemTarget, serveError on lookup failure) and resolver.go (PagedItem). Tests: publicsite and content unit tests, and the new content-serving.feature scenarios. Docs: content API and configuration pages describing the rule. Test support: the failingReread wrapper exercises the new error path. Feature change: content-terms.feature now checks the resolve API for /hello-world/page/2 instead of a 404 from the renderer. This follows from the new renderer redirect.
One effect is not named in the PR description. redirectTarget now runs for every resolved kind, so term pages (KindTerm) also get a 301 from a trailing or repeated-slash form to their plain address. Term pages are published content at plain addresses, so the same one-address rule applies. This is consistent with the issue and is not an unrelated change.
I found no change unrelated to #561.

Summary
The built-in renderer redirects alternate post and page addresses to their plain addresses.
Post and page requests with alternate paths go to the item’s plain address.
The earlier error-reporting concern is fixed: failed fallback reads reach serveError instead of becoming 404 responses. No new actionable issues were found.

@greptile-apps good catch, fixed. pagedItemTarget now passes any error that isn't content.ErrNotFound back to ServeHTTP, and ServeHTTP answers it with serveError. I added a test where only the fallback's own read of the post fails, so /hello-world/page/2 now gets a 500 instead of a 404.
Thanks for the fix. This addresses the finding: errors other than content.ErrNotFound now reach ServeHTTP and are handled by serveError, and the new regression test checks that a failed fallback read returns 500 rather than 404. I consider this resolved.
@codescene-access moved the reread counting in the test fake's PublishedByPath into a small reread helper, so the nesting is gone. @coderabbitai the PagedItem error point was already handled: errors other than ErrNotFound now give a 500, and there's a regression test for it (Greptile confirmed above).

3. Every function carries a doc comment: Go in canonical form, TypeScript following tsdoc standard. Tests are the exception: a Go `Test`, `Benchmark` or `Fuzz` function and a TypeScript test callback carry none, because their name says what they verify. Helpers in test files still carry one. Lines wrap at 120 columns.
@codescene-access the cohesion drop came from the reread-failure fields and helper I added to the shared fakeReader for one test. They now live in a small failingReread wrapper in canonical_address_test.go, next to the test that uses it, so publicsite_test.go is back to what it is on main.
Fixed the CI failure. An existing scenario in content-terms.feature still expected the site to answer 404 for "/hello-world/page/2", which this PR now redirects to the post on purpose. That scenario now checks the resolve API instead, which still answers 404 there as the docs describe.
🟡 Medium risk · Redirecting noncanonical post/page URLs and page-number suffixes to canonical addresses could disrupt clients that depend on those URL forms.
Single posts and pages now redirect with a 301 to their canonical address when requested with trailing or repeated slashes, and page-number suffixes like /hello-world/page/1 redirect to the item instead of returning 404. No issues found.
