Closes #569

What

  • serve waits for a PostgreSQL server that is not up yet, up to GOPHENBERG_DATABASE_WAIT (60 seconds by default), trying again every GOPHENBERG_DATABASE_WAIT_INTERVAL (1 second). Only a refused connection, a missing socket or a server that says it is still starting up is waited for. A wrong password, a missing role or a missing database stops at once. A stop during the wait ends cleanly, like a stop while serving.
  • Once the database answers, a start the update check follows writes database_reached into state/update.json before it migrates. An update that raised the minimum version now stays down only when its new build reached the database, and goes back like any other update when it never did. If another command takes the update back while a start waits, that start stops before it migrates.
  • gophenberg about names node, the oldest Node.js major the release runs a theme on. A test keeps it equal to the Node.js of the release image.
  • releasetool record accepts a plain http download address on a loopback host, the same rule the site uses when it downloads, so a test can serve a local update site.
  • The configuration, commands and updates pages explain the wait, the mark and the new field.

Why

A database that answered a few seconds late, after a reboot or right after an update, made serve fail each start at once. Under a service manager that restarts it, those quick failures right after an update took back a version that was fine.

Testing Instructions

  1. Run make cover GOTESTFLAGS=-race with the test database. The late database scenarios keep a stand-in for the database closed for two seconds, then let it through.
  2. On a site, stop PostgreSQL, start gophenberg serve, then start PostgreSQL within a minute. The log shows "waiting for the database to answer", then "the database answered", and the site serves.
  3. Start it again with GOPHENBERG_DATABASE_WAIT=0 while PostgreSQL is stopped. It stops at once with a message naming the setting.
  4. Run gophenberg about -json and check that it names node.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • serve can wait for PostgreSQL to become available, with configurable wait and retry intervals. Credential and other non-retryable errors still fail immediately; waiting can be disabled.
    • about -json now reports Node.js 24 as the oldest supported major version for running themes.
    • Release recording accepts HTTP download URLs on loopback hosts.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Updates that raise the minimum version can roll back if the new build has not reached the database. If it has, the service remains down and requires restoring from backup.
  • Documentation
    • Updated self-hosting guidance covers database startup waits and update rollback behavior.

Walkthrough

This PR adds configurable PostgreSQL startup retries, tracks when an updated build reaches the database, and changes rollback decisions based on that state. It also reports the oldest supported Node.js major and permits loopback HTTP download addresses in releasetool record.

Changes: Database startup and update rollback

Layer / File(s) Summary
Database wait policy and configuration
.env.example, internal/app/database_wait.go, internal/app/database_wait_test.go, internal/app/database_wait_steps_test.go, internal/app/run.go, internal/app/run_test.go, test/features/features/database-wait.feature, docs/src/content/docs/self-hosting/configuration.md
serve retries refused connections, missing sockets, and PostgreSQL startup-in-progress errors. The wait and retry interval are configurable. Other connection errors fail immediately. Tests cover retry, timeout, cancellation, and zero-wait behavior.
Startup readiness and database-reached state
internal/app/run.go, internal/app/postgres.go, internal/app/bootguard_test.go, internal/app/postgres_migrate_test.go, internal/updater/state.go, internal/updater/guard.go, internal/updater/database_mark_test.go, internal/updater/state_lock_test.go
Readiness waits for the database, records database_reached through the updater guard, and then prepares the database. Migrating commands also record database reachability. Tests cover state updates and readiness failures.
Rollback decisions after database access
internal/updater/rollback.go, internal/updater/guard.go, internal/updater/guard_test.go, internal/updater/rollback_test.go, internal/updater/state_test.go, internal/app/core_updates_test.go, test/features/features/core-updates.feature, docs/src/content/docs/self-hosting/commands.md, docs/src/content/docs/self-hosting/configuration.md, docs/src/content/docs/self-hosting/updates-and-backups.md
Failed long-jump updates roll back if the build did not reach the database. If it reached the database, the update remains down and provides backup-restore guidance. Tests and documentation describe these outcomes.

Node.js major reporting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Node.js build fact and verification
internal/themehost/supervisor.go, internal/app/about.go, internal/app/about_test.go, internal/themehost/image_test.go, docs/src/content/docs/self-hosting/commands.md, internal/app/features_test.go, test/features/features/operator-commands.feature
about -json reports the oldest supported Node.js major, set to 24. Tests compare the value with the release image and verify the JSON output.

Release download address validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Loopback HTTP download addresses
cmd/releasetool/main.go, cmd/releasetool/record.go, cmd/releasetool/record_test.go
releasetool record accepts HTTP download addresses on loopback hosts and validates them with update.ParseAddress. Tests cover accepted loopback addresses and rejected URL forms.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Only #569 is linked, as a direct, open issue. All its requirements are coding requirements.

  1. [#569] serve waits for a database that is not up yet. Verified at head in internal/app/database_wait.go. databaseWaitFrom reads the wait (default one minute, zero allowed) and the interval (default one second). await retries only when notUpYet reports true. notUpYet matches an unanswered try cut short by the wait's end, SQLSTATE 57P03, syscall.ECONNREFUSED and syscall.ENOENT. Any other error returns at once, so a wrong password, missing role or missing database stops with its own error. On timeout, ranOut names the setting and wraps the last failure. The summary states that run.go calls the wait before preparing the database. I did not read run.go directly.

  2. [#569] A start after an update writes database_reached before it migrates. Verified at head in internal/app/postgres.go: checkedFirst loads the updater settings, opens the database, runs guardPostgres, then calls updater.MarkDatabaseReached(install, version.Version()) before the migrating step runs. The summary states that Guard.ReachedDatabase refuses to continue when another command has taken the update back, and that rollback.go's mayHaveMigrated now requires both LongJump and DatabaseReached. I did not read guard.go or rollback.go directly. Extending the mark to all migrating commands, not only the update start, supports the same rollback rule and is covered under the out-of-scope assessment.

  3. [#569] A stop during the wait ends cleanly. The summary states that run.go returns nil when the error matches the context error. Tests named TestServeStopsCleanlyWhenItEndsWhileItWaitsForTheDatabase cover this path. I did not read run.go directly.

  4. [#569] gophenberg about names the oldest Node.js major. The summary states that internal/themehost/supervisor.go defines OldestNodeMajor = 24, about.go adds the node JSON field, and TestTheImageShipsTheOldestNodeMajor compares each distroless/nodejs image in the root Dockerfile with that constant. I read image_test.go at head. Its logic fails when the Dockerfile names no distroless Node image or names one with a different major. I did not read supervisor.go or about.go directly.

  5. [#569] releasetool record accepts a plain http address on a loopback host. The summary states that cmd/releasetool/record.go now validates with update.ParseAddress and that TestRecordTakesPlainHTTPOnALoopbackHost covers IPv4 loopback, localhost and IPv6 loopback, with rejection of non-loopback plain HTTP. I did not read record.go directly.

All coding requirements have implementation at head. Tests cover the wait, the reached mark, shutdown during the wait, and the rollback rules. Items 3, 4 and 5 rest partly on the change summary, not on source I read. The previous PASS remains supported, and the change since the previous review does not contradict it.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Every changed area traces to #569 or supports it.

  • internal/app/database_wait.go, its steps and tests, run.go, run_test.go: the database wait and clean stop (#569 item 1).
  • internal/app/postgres.go (new at head relative to the previous review): checkedFirst marks the database reached through updater.MarkDatabaseReached before a migrating step runs. This implements the database_reached mark that #569 item 2 requires before migration. The summary states that the mark does nothing unless the running build is the build an update switched to, so ordinary migrating commands do not change state. The added imports (database/sql, updater, version) serve only this change. Its tests in postgres_migrate_test.go check the mark for each migrating command.
  • internal/updater/guard.go, rollback.go, state.go, and their tests: the database_reached field and the rollback rule that depends on it (#569 item 2).
  • internal/themehost/supervisor.go, image_test.go, internal/app/about.go and its tests, operator-commands.feature: the node field (#569 item 4).
  • cmd/releasetool/record.go, record_test.go, main.go: the loopback plain-HTTP rule (#569 item 5). The usage placeholder change follows from this.
  • core-updates feature and steps, database-wait feature and steps: scenario and test support for the changes above.
  • .env.example, configuration.md, commands.md, updates-and-backups.md: documentation of the new settings and the changed rollback rule. The PR description lists this documentation as part of the change.

I found no change unrelated to #569 in the summary or in the files I read.

[Medium impact] The current code addresses all three previously reported issues. No outstanding findings block merging.

Summary

serve waits for PostgreSQL to become available and records whether an updated build reached the database before migrating.

  • The site waits for PostgreSQL when it starts late.
  • Update rollback depends on whether the new build reached the database.
  • about -json reports the oldest Node.js major for themes.

All three previous findings are addressed. No outstanding findings block merging.

The guide is at https://docs.gopherium.org.

#### The import rule

Only dbkit imports a SQLite driver, and only dbkit opens a handle. Give your program both rules in its `.golangci.yml`. depguard refuses the drivers, and forbidigo refuses `sql.Open` and `sql.OpenDB`, which need no driver import to bypass every connection rule.

    `version: &quot;2&quot;

`analyze-types` makes forbidigo catch an aliased import of `database/sql` too.

<title>GitHub - pgx-contrib/pgxprom: Prometheus metrics instrumentation for pgx v5 — pool stats and per-query request counts, error rates, and latency histograms · GitHub</title>
<location>https://github.com/pgx-contrib/pgxprom</location>
<excerpt>citeturn0search4 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: 2 weeks ago;     go get github.com/pgx-contrib/pgxprom ...     config, err := pgxpool.ParseConfig(os.Getenv(&quot;PGX_DATABASE_URL&quot;))

# pgxprom

Prometheus instrumentation for pgx v5. Provides two collectors: `PoolCollector` exposes connection pool metrics, and `QueryCollector` records per-query request counts, error counts, and latency histograms as Prometheus metrics.

## Installation

    go get github.com/pgx-contrib/pgxprom

## Usage

### PoolCollector

`PoolCollector` implements `prometheus.Collector` and exposes connection pool statistics for one or more `pgxpool.Pool` instances.

    config, err := pgxpool.ParseConfig(os.Getenv(&quot;PGX_DATABASE_URL&quot;))
    if err != nil {
        panic(err)
    }

    pool, err := pgxpool.NewWithConfig(context.Background(), config)
    if err != nil {
        panic(err)
    }

    collector := pgxprom.NewPoolCollector()
    // register the pool with the collector
    collector.Add(pool)
    // register the collector with Prometheus
    if err := prometheus.Register(collector); err != nil {
        panic(err)
    }

To stop tracking a pool (e.g. on graceful shutdown):

    collector.Remove(pool)

L198:   * pgconn: add `ErrReadOnlyConnection`, `ErrReadWriteConnection`, `ErrPrimaryConnection`, and `ErrStandbyConnection` sentinel errors for `target_session_attrs` validation, allowing callers to use `errors.Is` (Adrian-Stefan Mares)
L199: * pgxpool: accept `pool_ping_timeout` in connection strings to configure `Config.PingTimeout`. The default is zero; zero and negative durations mean no timeout (1991santhu)
L200: ## Changes
L201:
L202: * Name-based row-to-struct mapping now matches explicit `db` tags case-insensitively, with exact matches taking precedence so tags can still distinguish quoted column names that differ only by case (AlisinaDevelo)
L203: * pgconn: resolve the OS user account only when no user is supplied by the connection string, environment, or service file, avoiding unnecessary account lookups and crashes in some restricted container environments. Home-directory defaults for password, service, and TLS files remain available independently of the account lookup. On Unix these now use `$HOME` rather than the OS account&#39;s home directory (Mohamed MAACHE)

### Variables ¶

This section is empty.

### Functions ¶

#### func CheckAddress ¶

    func CheckAddress(address string) error

CheckAddress returns the error for an empty PostgreSQL address or one pgx 5.10 and 5.11 read apart with no PG* set.

#### func Classify ¶

    func Classify(err error) error

Classify returns err wrapped in its dbkit error class, or err unchanged when it has none or already carries it.

#### func Migrate ¶

    func Migrate(ctx context.Context, db *sql.DB, m Migrations) error

Migrate applies every pending migration of m to db under goose&#39;s advisory lock, creating an absent schema of Table.

### Types ¶

#### type Handle ¶

    type Handle struct {
    	// Pool owns every connection of the handle.
    	Pool *pgxpool.Pool
    	// DB is the database/sql view of Pool, with no idle connection of its own.
    	DB *sql.DB
    }

Handle is the one PostgreSQL pool of a site and a database/sql view that draws from it.

#### func Open ¶

    func Open(address string, opts Options) (*Handle, error)

Open returns a handle on the PostgreSQL database of address, capped at opts.MaxConns, and connects to nothing.

#### func (*Handle) Close ¶

    func (h *Handle) Close() error

Close closes the view, then the pool.

#### type Migrations ¶

    type Migrations struct {
    	// Table is the version table, table or schema.table, lowercase parts of up to 63 bytes, none reserved, no pg_ schema.
    	Table string
    	// FS holds the owner&#39;s SQL migration files at its root, and nil means none.
    	FS fs.FS
    	// Go are the owner&#39;s Go migrations, each built with goose.NewGoMigration.
    	Go []*goose.Migration
    }

Migrations are the migrations of one owner.

#### type Options ¶

    type Options struct {
    	// MaxConns caps the connections the pool and its database/sql view hold together, from 2 to 2147483647.
    	MaxConns int
    }

Options configures one PostgreSQL pool. MaxConns is required.

### Constants ¶

This section is empty.

### Variables ¶

This section is empty.

### Functions ¶

#### func CheckAddress ¶

    func CheckAddress(address string) error

CheckAddress returns the error for an empty PostgreSQL address or one pgx 5.10 and 5.11 read apart with no PG* set.

#### func Classify ¶

    func Classify(err error) error

Classify returns err wrapped in its dbkit error class, or err unchanged when it has none or already carries it.

#### func Migrate ¶

    func Migrate(ctx context.Context, db *sql.DB, m Migrations) error

Migrate applies every pending migration of m to db under goose&#39;s advisory lock, creating an absent schema of Table.

### Types ¶

#### type Handle ¶

    type Handle struct {
    	// Pool owns every connection of the handle.
    	Pool *pgxpool.Pool
    	// DB is the database/sql view of Pool, with no idle connection of its own.
    	DB *sql.DB
    }

#### func (*Handle) Close ¶

    func (h *Handle) Close() error

Close closes the view, then the pool.

#### type Migrations ¶

    type Migrations struct {
    }

Migrations are the migrations of one owner.

#### type Options ¶

    type Options struct {
    	// MaxConns caps the connections the pool and its database/sql view hold together, from 2 to 2147483647.
    	MaxConns int
    }

Options configures one PostgreSQL pool. MaxConns is required.

Bound each database ping by the remaining wait time.

The pool has no default ping or connection timeout. Pool.Ping receives the outer context directly, so a silent host can keep one attempt active beyond GOPHENBERG_DATABASE_WAIT.

Create a child context for each attempt. Use the earlier of the per-attempt budget and the remaining overall wait. Classify an error as retryable only when the child context expired while the outer context is still active. This preserves terminal cancellation and does not classify an independent pool timeout as “not up yet.”

The proposed max(w.interval, 5*time.Second) budget is not sufficient because it can exceed a short or zero overall wait.

Review comment at @internal/app/database_wait.go at line 51:
Update the wait loop around ping(ctx) to create a child context for each attempt
whose deadline is the earlier of the per-attempt budget and the remaining
overall wait. Retry only when that child context expires while the outer context
remains active; preserve terminal outer cancellation and treat independent pool
timeouts as non-retryable.

🔴 High risk · Making long-jump rollback depend on a database-reached marker changes migration recovery; a missed mark could restore an older build against a newer schema.

Adds a bounded wait for a late-starting PostgreSQL database in serve, a database_reached mark in state/update.json so updates that never reached the database can roll back, the Node.js major in about, and loopback http support in releasetool record. No issues found.

Guard PostgreSQL-only startup code for SQLite.

boot.ready always calls reachDatabase, and reachDatabase dereferences b.built.pgHandle.Pool. SQLite sites can have a nil pgHandle, so serve can panic during startup.

When pgHandle is nil, skip the PostgreSQL wait and still call b.guard.ReachedDatabase(). Also handle the earlier b.built.pgHandle.DB dereference in updatesFromAdmin; otherwise SQLite can panic before ready runs.
