fix(watcher): attach workload pods to container profile scans - #470
ContainerProfile events for controller-managed workloads previously emitted scan commands without a pod, so the scanner could not resolve the workload's imagePullSecrets. Resolve the pod through the existing workload selector, owner, and revision checks and attach it to the scan command with either setting of SkipProfilesWithoutInstances. Each event resolves the pod once.
Preserve the existing no-instance filtering and podless handling of legacy/host profiles. Surface workload lookup and pod-list API failures rather than sending a scan without credentials after a failed lookup.
Regression coverage includes Pod, Deployment, ReplicaSet, StatefulSet, DaemonSet, and Job profiles; both filter settings; matchExpressions selectors; terminating pods; wrong owner UIDs; old controller revisions; missing workloads/selectors; and API failures. The credential regressions fail against the original implementation.
Validation:
Passed: go test -p 2 -tags=integration ./... -skip '^TestRegistryCommandWatch$' -count=1 (including tests using the Helm-generated DaemonSet template).
Passed: go test -race -p 2 ./watcher -run 'Test(ContainerProfile|GetPod|WatchHandler_hasMatchingPod|HandleContainerProfileEvents)' -count=1.
Passed: go vet -p 2 ./..., CGO_ENABLED=0 go build -p 2 -o /tmp/operator-469 ., formatting and diff checks.
Attempted unfiltered go test -p 2 ./... -count=1: TestRegistryCommandWatch cannot start its k3s testcontainer because Docker is unavailable locally. The same failure reproduces against the original implementation. No live private-registry test was performed.
Container profiles now use credentials from the matching active pod across supported workload types, avoiding credentials from terminating pods, unrelated controllers, or older revisions.
When configured to skip profiles without instances, profiles with no matching pod are skipped. Pod lookup failures are logged and the profile is skipped.
Profiles without usable workload information and Node profiles continue without a pod lookup.

Walkthrough
Pod resolution now supports controller-managed container profiles. Event handling uses the resolved pod in command arguments and skips profiles without a present pod when configured. Tests cover workload matching, ownership and revision checks, and lookup errors.

Summary
Resolve pods from related workloads watcher/containerprofilewatcher.go
getPod now resolves pods for related workload kinds using selectors and ownership checks. It returns lookup errors separately from missing workloads or unmatched pods.
Use resolved pods in event handling watcher/containerprofilewatcher.go, watcher/containerprofilewatcher_test.go
Event handling resolves the pod before building command arguments and applies SkipProfilesWithoutInstances to the result. Tests cover workload kinds, skip settings, ownership and revision checks, and lookup outcomes.
kubescape/operator#469 — The change resolves controller-managed workload pods and passes the resolved pod in command arguments, addressing the reported missing pod data for registry credentials.

kubescape/operator#456 — Both PRs change the host ContainerProfile instance-check path in containerprofilewatcher.go; their handling of Node profiles differs and may need reconciliation.

Profiles for deleted pods can be skipped despite the setting that permits scanning without a pod. This is a narrow regression to fix or explicitly accept before merging.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue [#469] requires attaching a matching pod to scans for controller-managed workloads. The change resolves Pod, Deployment, ReplicaSet, StatefulSet, DaemonSet, and Job pods with selector, owner, revision, and presence checks, then includes the pod in the scan command. It preserves podless handling for missing, legacy, and Node profiles and surfaces workload and pod-list errors. Tests cover both filter settings, selector expressions, invalid or stale instances, missing workload data, and API failures.

Explanation
The changes are limited to workload-aware pod resolution in the container profile watcher and regression tests for credential selection and error handling. These changes directly support issue [#469]. No unrelated product behavior is identified.

Treat a missing Pod as no pod. Do not return the NotFound error.
Line 187 returns the Get error unchanged. A NotFound for a deleted pod therefore becomes a lookup error.
The handler logs that error and executes continue at Lines 141-144. This happens before the SkipProfilesWithoutInstances check. When SkipProfilesWithoutInstances is false, profiles of deleted pods are now dropped. These profiles used to be scanned without a pod.
The workload path at Lines 200-202 already maps NotFound to nil, nil, so the two paths are inconsistent. For a deleted workload and SkipProfilesWithoutInstances=false, the profile is still scanned. For a deleted Pod, it is not. The existing deleted-pod profile test (podProfile("deleted-pod", "gone")) runs only with the default true setting, so it does not catch this.
Map NotFound to nil, nil and surface only other errors. Consider adding a Pod test case with skip=false and a missing pod.

The workload credential fix is needed, but the selected pod must belong to the profile’s workload before its credentials are forwarded. See the inline finding. The existing missing-Pod comment describes behavior already present on main, so I am not treating it as a new regression.

P1: Verify the pod belongs to this workload before using its credentials. For a Deployment or Job, any present pod with matching labels is returned, even if owned by another controller. For example, an unrelated pod with the same app label and different imagePullSecrets can be listed first; the scan then receives that pod’s credentials and may fail authentication (or use credentials from the wrong workload). During a Deployment rollout, a pod from another ReplicaSet revision can likewise be selected. Check the owner chain and relevant profile revision before selecting a pod, and cover overlapping selectors and rollout revisions with different secrets.
Thank you for contributing this fix and the extensive workload and error-path tests. Your work on the missing registry credentials is appreciated. The overlapping fix in #471 has now been merged, so we will close this PR to avoid carrying duplicate changes. Thanks again for taking the time to help improve Kubescape.
