WalkthroughThe change associates response IDs with canonical conversations, persists ownership before exposing streamed IDs, and preserves partial turns when streams end early. Conversation lookup and deletion now use associated response aliases. Database migrations and tests cover the new ownership field and storage behavior. ChangesConversation ownership and streaming

### Summary
When using the Copilot SDK/CLI with the Responses API, every model round reconstructs and sends the complete conversation history. The runtime does not send `previous_response_id` and sets `store: false`.
### Versions tested
* `GitHub.Copilot.SDK` 1.0.5 with Copilot CLI 1.0.73
* `GitHub.Copilot.SDK` 1.0.9-preview.1 with Copilot CLI 1.0.74
* Azure AI Foundry OpenAI-compatible provider
* `wireApi: responses`
The preview SDK references CLI `1.0.76-5`, but that package was not available for testing.
### Observed behavior
A privacy-safe request probe showed:
* Initial request: 1 input item
* Tool continuation: 3 input items
* Next user turn: 5 input items

# Get started with the Langflow API
You can use the Langflow API for programmatic interactions with Langflow, such as the following:
* Create and edit flows, including file management for flows.
* Develop applications that use your flows.
* Develop custom components.
* Build Langflow as a dependency of a larger application, codebase, or service.
* Contribute to the overall Langflow codebase.
To view and test all available endpoints, you can access the Langflow API's OpenAPI specification at your Langflow deployment's `/docs` endpoint, such as `http://localhost:7860/docs`.
For an example of the Langflow API in a script, see the Langflow quickstart.
The quickstart demonstrates how to get automatically generated code snippets for your flows, use a script to run a flow, and extract data from the Langfow API response.
## Form Langflow API requests
While individual options vary by endpoint, all Langflow API requests share some commonalities, like a URL, method, parameters, and authentication.

Steering may cause the active response to finish at a safe output boundary with `response.incomplete` and `incomplete_details.reason` set to `steered`, followed automatically by a successor `response.created`. Normal completion can also be followed by an automatic successor. Automatic successors inherit the previous response’s settings and continue from it with the queued input.
If the response stops for client-owned tool output or approval, accepted steering input remains queued and `response.steer.pending` is emitted after `response.completed`. Fill the `required_input` stubs from that event with saved tool results or approval decisions, and send one explicit `response.create` per parent with the same `previous_response_id` and WebSocket lane. Do not rerun tools or resend accepted steering input. The queued input is prepended in submission order to that request’s input, and the explicit request retains its own settings.
This event accepts only `type`, `previous_response_id`, and `input`. Do not send `stream_id`; the target response determines the WebSocket lane.

Associate cold responses with the durable conversation owner.
Langflow assigns a unique ID to each response. A cold continuation therefore receives a new response ID. The current path treats that ID as a new canonical conversation, so the response is placed in a separate ownership group instead of the existing conversation.
Resolve the durable canonical ID before persisting a cold continuation, and pass it as conversation_id to claim_session. Keep the fresh response ID as store_id so cold metadata is not overwritten.

(1a) [Normal] Conversations without an ownership row can no longer be deleted
Problem
delete_user_conversationnow returnsFalsewhenget_conversation_sessionsis empty.- It no longer falls through to deleting the in-memory entry and the persisted conversation row.
delete_all_user_sessions(used by onboarding rollback) iterates persisted conversations and callsdelete_sessionwith no ownership pre-check.- Any conversation row lacking a
session_ownershiprecord is now reported "not found" and never removed.
- Any conversation row lacking a
- Such rows exist in practice:
- The old code stored the conversation first, then claimed ownership best-effort and swallowed failures.
- That is the same bug class this PR fixes.
- Pre-upgrade orphans remain.
Background Information
- The per-ID API path is unaffected:
_assert_ownsalready 404s on unowned IDs. - Affected paths:
- Bulk "delete all" during rollback in
api/settings/endpoints.py(~L1986). - Orphan rows lingering in the sidebar.
- Bulk "delete all" during rollback in
- Limited to legacy or failed-claim data, so not Major.
Code References
src/agent.py—delete_user_conversation(~L1130–1155)src/services/chat_service.py—delete_session(~L933),delete_all_user_sessions(~L1022)
Potential Solution
- When
get_conversation_sessionsreturns[], still remove the local record for the caller's own key:- Delete the in-memory entry and call
conversation_persistence.delete_conversation_thread(user_id, response_id). - The persistence layer is already user-scoped, so this is safe.
- Delete the in-memory entry and call
- Return
Falseonly if nothing was removed. - Add a unit test for deleting a conversation that has no ownership row.
Alternative Solutions
- Backfill missing ownership rows in migration
0008for existingconversationsrows. This is heavier and still misses file-mode data.

(1c) [Minor] Synchronous fsync + full-file rewrite on the event loop, before the first streamed chunk
Problem
claim_session(files/hybrid) calls_save_ownership_datasynchronously: temp file,json.dump,fsync,os.replace, plus an O(n) dict copy.- This now runs on the streaming hot path before the first chunk is yielded.
- It blocks the event loop for every user and adds time-to-first-token latency, scaling with ownership-file size.
Background Information
- The default
dbmode is unaffected; the legacy write was also synchronous but had nofsync. NamedTemporaryFilecreates the file0600, andos.replacecarries that mode ontosession_ownership.json.- This differs from the previous umask default and matters only if another UID reads the file.
- The copy-on-write design is correct today precisely because there is no
awaitbetween buildingupdatedand publishing it. Offloading to a thread requires anasyncio.Lock.
Code References
src/services/session_ownership_service.py—_save_ownership_data(~L60–73),claim_session(~L76–118)
Potential Solution
- Wrap the write in
asyncio.to_threadunder a service-levelasyncio.Lock, buildingupdatedinside the lock. - Optionally
os.chmodthe temp file to the previous mode.
Alternative Solutions
- Leave as is and document
filesmode as legacy/low-volume. Acceptable for a hotfix.

(1d) [Minor] Double ownership lookup in the delete path (TOCTOU) and redundant DB round-trips
Problem
ChatService.delete_sessionresolves the group viaget_conversation_sessionsto delete upstream Langflow sessions.delete_user_conversationthen resolves the group again before revoking it.- An alias claimed by an in-flight stream between the two calls is revoked locally but its Langflow session is never deleted (leaked upstream).
Background Information
- The failure mode is fail-safe on the authorization side: a late claim against a deleted canonical raises
PermissionError, so the stream errors. - The leak is upstream data only, and the window is small.
Code References
src/services/chat_service.py—delete_session(~L933–965)src/agent.py—delete_user_conversation(~L1130–1155)
Potential Solution
- Resolve once and pass
session_idsintodelete_user_conversation(optional parameter), or move the upstream cleanup inside one function.
Alternative Solutions
- Re-resolve after revocation and delete any extra upstream aliases. This is more complex for little gain.

(1e) [Minor] New Alembic revision 0008 on a release branch risks a multi-head conflict when forward-ported
Problem
0008_session_conversation_idchains from0007_add_knowledge_delete_anonymousonrelease-cpd-0.8.0-patch10.maincurrently also tops out at0007.- Any independent
0008landing onmainbefore this is forward-ported causes multiple Alembic heads, which failsalembic upgrade headat startup.
- Any independent
Background Information
- Fresh and upgrade paths are otherwise fine: the data backfill (
conversation_id = response_id) is correct, and the revision id (28 chars) fitsalembic_version.version_num(32). downgradeuses plaindrop_column. Existing migrations usebatch_alter_tablefor SQLite compatibility, though modern SQLite supportsDROP COLUMN.

Potential Solution
- Before forward-porting, confirm
mainand open PRs have no competing0008; renumber oralembic mergeif so. - Use
op.batch_alter_tableindowngradefor consistency with0005.
Alternative Solutions
- None needed; this is a process note.

(1g) [Minor] Test placement and coverage gaps
Problem
- ~535 lines of ownership/deletion/migration-alias tests were added to
tests/unit/test_langflow_stream_provider_errors.py.- The repo convention is to put a test where its module lives (e.g.
tests/unit/services/).

- Not covered:
- Restart + alias-only continuation (see 1b).
- Deleting a conversation with no ownership row (see 1a).
- A concurrent claim hitting
IntegrityErrorfor the same user, which is mapped toPermissionErrorand surfaces as a stream error.
Background Information
- The existing tests are otherwise thorough: cancel/close, foreign-owner, claim-failure fail-closed, reload-from-disk, and hybrid alias cleanup.

Potential Solution
- Move the ownership/delete cases to
tests/unit/services/test_session_ownership_service_modes.py(or a newtest_chat_delete_aliases.py). - Add the three missing cases.
Alternative Solutions
- Leave placement as is and add only the missing cases.

Problem
Interrupted Langflow streams could expose a response ID before ownership was saved, causing follow-up requests to fail with
404 session_not_found.Why this change / root cause
CPD investigation found chat streams ending around 30 seconds, followed by repeated
404s. Interrupted sessions existed in Langflow but had no backend ownership record. The active ingress had a 30-second timeout with no route override; it is a suspected trigger, not a confirmed cause (no HTTP504was captured). The reproduced backend defect was lifecycle ordering: response IDs reached the client before ownership was persisted, and cancellation skipped the normal end-of-stream persistence. Follow-ups then correctly failed the ownership guard. This fix preserves that guard and makes exposed IDs durably owned instead.
Review also exposed two recovery gaps: newly claimed aliases survived canonical conversation deletion, and file-write failures were hidden by an in-memory ownership-cache readback. Durable alias associations/group revocation and explicit persistence-success checks address those gaps.
