feat: scope observability and cost queries to release lines - #748
OpenChoreo is adding release lines: more lines of a component, released and deployed next to the component in the same environments. Every component also has an implicit default line, which is the component itself. The observer now scopes component queries to every line, the default line, or one line, and the adapters need to apply that scope to logs, events, traces, metrics, alerts and costs.
Approach
The observer sends one of three scopes to the adapters:
componentUid alone: every line of the component.
componentUid with defaultLineOnly: true: the default line only.
releaseLineUid: one line, matched on its own.
A release line's pods carry openchoreo.dev/release-line-uid, and their component's UID as openchoreo.dev/release-line-component-uid instead of openchoreo.dev/component-uid. That keeps the default line's selectors from ever matching a line's pods. An adapter sets OpenChoreo-Release-Line-Applied when it applied the line scope.
This PR updates the modules OpenChoreo installs by default:
observability-logs-opensearch: logs and Kubernetes events. Every-line queries match component-uid or release-line-component-uid. A line's entries are attributed to their component, and alert rules report their component when read back. The setup job maps release-line-component-uid for events.
observability-tracing-opensearch: spans, with the same matching and attribution. The setup job maps release-line-component-uid for spans.
observability-metrics-prometheus: resource and HTTP metrics and alert rules. Every-line queries combine both labels, default-line queries exclude line pods, and line queries match the line UID. kube-state-metrics exports release-line-component-uid, runtime topology attributes line pods to their component, and alert rules record their component in a component_uid annotation.
finops-opencost: costs and recommendations, with line pod allocations attributed to their component.
Adapter API code for these modules is regenerated from the openchoreo adapter specs.
Upgrading needs the updated module charts: the OpenSearch setup jobs map the new field, and kube-state-metrics must export release-line-component-uid.
Tested on k3d with OpenChoreo from the release lines branch, both on a fresh install and after an upgrade from v1.3.2. Logs, events, traces, resource metrics, alerts with notifications and costs all split exactly: every line = default + each line.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Filter costs, recommendations, metrics, logs, events, and traces by a specific release line, the default line, or across all lines.
View release-line context in audit logs and apply release-line scope to alert-rule queries.
Responses indicate when component or release-line scoping has been applied.
Component information is available for telemetry from both default-line and release-line workloads.
Documentation
Added upgrade guidance and scripts to apply release-line mappings to existing log, audit, and trace indices.
This change adds release-line filters to FinOps cost and recommendation queries and to log, event, metric, and trace queries. It adds component UID fallbacks, response headers, alert metadata, and OpenSearch mappings for release-line fields.
Changes: Release-line cost and recommendation flow
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Allocation filters and handler validation finops-opencost/internal/...
Cost and recommendation handlers validate release-line inputs and pass release-line scope to allocation and metrics queries. Scoped responses include the release-line-applied header.
Component UID fallback and tests finops-opencost/internal/...
Allocation processing uses the default component UID label or falls back to the release-line component UID label. Tests cover filters, validation, response headers, metrics scope, and response-body access.
Log, event, audit, and alert filtering
Layer / File(s)
Summary
OpenSearch scope and record fields observability-logs-opensearch/internal/opensearch/...
Log, event, alert, and audit queries support release-line filters. Parsed records can use the release-line component UID label.
Handlers and index mappings observability-logs-opensearch/internal/...
Handlers pass release-line scope and set response headers. Audit records include release-line values. Templates and existing indices receive release-line mappings. Upgrade documentation, scripts, and tests cover the mappings and query behavior.
Prometheus metrics and alerts
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Pod-label selectors and metric handling observability-metrics-prometheus/internal/prometheus/queries.go, observability-metrics-prometheus/internal/handlers.go
Metric queries use selectors for specific, default, and all release lines. Runtime topology maps release-line component UIDs.
Alert rules and validation observability-metrics-prometheus/internal/prometheus/alertrules.go, observability-metrics-prometheus/helm/values.yaml, observability-metrics-prometheus/internal/*_test.go
Alert expressions include release-line scope, and generated rules include a component annotation. The pod-label allowlist includes release-line labels. Tests cover selectors, alert expressions, topology, response headers, and alert mapping.
Trace filtering and parsing
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Trace scope and parsing observability-tracing-opensearch/internal/...
Trace requests and queries support release-line scope. Span parsing falls back to the release-line component UID.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 9c030
Several release-line scoping and upgrade-script concerns remain open. Some scoped queries can return records from the wrong line or component, and the trace upgrade script can send its OpenSearch credential to the wrong local listener. Resolve or explicitly accept these before merging.

Major · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win
Fail setup when the existing-index mapping update fails.
If this request returns a non-200 response, the script logs the failure and continues. Existing indices can then lack the new release-line fields, so line-scoped searches miss spans until those indices are replaced. Make the setup job fail on an HTTP error or a curl transport error. OpenSearch requires a mapping update to add fields to an existing index. (docs.opensearch.org)
Based on learnings, network operations must stop or handle failure explicitly.

Filter component logs, events, traces and spans by the release line
UID label, and set OpenChoreo-Release-Line-Applied only when the line
filter was applied. Scope alert rules to their line, store the line
UID with the rule, and filter and return audit records by release line.
OpenObserve adds the line column to a stream only once a record carries
the label, so a line-scoped query on a stream without it now returns
no matches instead of failing.

Show how to pass a custom audit index prefix to upgrade-to-0-8.sh.
Stop the OpenSearch upgrade scripts before port-forwarding when the

and the credentials were sent to it.

Purpose
OpenChoreo is adding release lines: more lines of a component, released and deployed next to the component in the same environments. Every component also has an implicit
defaultline, which is the component itself. The observer now scopes component queries to every line, the default line, or one line, and the adapters need to apply that scope to logs, events, traces, metrics, alerts and costs.Approach
The observer sends one of three scopes to the adapters:
componentUidalone: every line of the component.componentUidwithdefaultLineOnly: true: the default line only.releaseLineUid: one line, matched on its own.A release line's pods carry
openchoreo.dev/release-line-uid, and their component's UID asopenchoreo.dev/release-line-component-uidinstead ofopenchoreo.dev/component-uid. That keeps the default line's selectors from ever matching a line's pods. An adapter setsOpenChoreo-Release-Line-Appliedwhen it applied the line scope. This PR updates the modules OpenChoreo installs by default:
observability-logs-opensearch: logs and Kubernetes events. Every-line queries matchcomponent-uidorrelease-line-component-uid. A line's entries are attributed to their component, and alert rules report their component when read back. The setup job mapsrelease-line-component-uidfor events.observability-tracing-opensearch: spans, with the same matching and attribution. The setup job mapsrelease-line-component-uidfor spans.observability-metrics-prometheus: resource and HTTP metrics and alert rules. Every-line queries combine both labels, default-line queries exclude line pods, and line queries match the line UID. kube-state-metrics exportsrelease-line-component-uid, runtime topology attributes line pods to their component, and alert rules record their component in acomponent_uidannotation.finops-opencost: costs and recommendations, with line pod allocations attributed to their component.Adapter API code for these modules is regenerated from the openchoreo adapter specs.
