iterating over data["repos"], then recreate the root directory so generated

ignore_errors enabled and os.makedirs with exist_ok enabled; leave the
per-repository rendering logic unchanged.
Review comments at @hack/owners/labels.sh:
- Around line 27-35: Update both Python invocations that load YAML for REPOS and
LABELS to receive SOURCE as a command-line argument and read the path from
sys.argv[1], rather than interpolating SOURCE into Python source. Preserve the
existing repository and label parsing behavior.
Review comments at @hack/owners/open_prs.sh:
- Around line 27-30: When no repository names are supplied, validate that OUT
exists as a directory before populating REPOS; report the missing directory and
exit nonzero if it does not. Keep the explicit-argument path unchanged.
- Line 57: Add a per-repository check in the open_prs.sh flow before the git rm
pipeline to verify that ${src}/OWNERS exists; if it is missing, report the
repository path to stderr and stop processing instead of staging a root OWNERS
deletion.

official GitHub repository name restrictions slashes dot dot repository URL SSH path normalization
💡 Result:
GitHub’s published repository-creation rules say a repository name can be at most **100 characters** and contain only ASCII letters, digits, `.`, `-`, and `_`. So `/` is not allowed in a repository name; `..` uses allowed characters, but the docs don’t say whether that exact name is accepted. ([docs.github.com](https://docs.github.com/en/repositories/creating-and-managing-repositories/creating-a-new-repository?apiVersion=2022-11-28&utm_source=openai))
GitHub documents SSH remotes in the form `git@github.com:OWNER/REPOSITORY.git`. In that URL, `/` separates the owner from the repository name—it isn’t part of the name. ([github.com](https://github.com/github/docs/blob/main/content/get-started/git-basics/about-remote-repositories.md?utm_source=openai))
**About `..` normalization:** GitHub’s repository docs don’t establish how GitHub handles dot segments in an SSH path. The familiar `git@github.com:owner/repo.git` form is SSH’s scp-like syntax, not an ordinary URL path; don’t assume `..` is normalized as a filesystem path. Whether a particular unusual path is accepted or rewritten remains unresolved in these sources.

Validate repository arguments before using them in paths.
repo is an explicit CLI argument. The repository security standard requires validation before external input constructs file paths or URLs. The current clone-first ordering does not establish a reachable out-of-workspace write for ../x, but it does not satisfy that validation requirement. Reject traversal-containing names before constructing src, dir, or the clone URL. Also reject names without rendered output.

…ewer hand-off command Review feedback on the generator and the two scripts: - gen_owners.py resolves symlinks before clearing the output directory and refuses the filesystem root, the repository, the current directory, any parent of the repository, and any path inside the repository other than hack/owners/. - labels.sh passes the YAML path to Python as an argument instead of interpolating it into source. - open_prs.sh checks the rendered directory exists before listing repositories, requires a rendered root OWNERS per repository before cloning so a bad name can never stage a root OWNERS deletion, keeps git ls-files failures fatal while tolerating an empty grep match (through files, so NUL separators survive), and only force-updates a remote branch when an open PR with the expected head owner and this title exists, leased on the observed OID. - owners.md and the working agreement tell a reviewer who cannot meet the timeline to /uncc and /auto-cc, since Blunderbuss manages review requests and only re-runs on request. There was a problem hiding this comment.
Just thinking that if someone merges a change to the owners.yaml we'd want that automatically reflected? Might not be necessary to be automated, just a thought. Since I assume we also want to add some check that make verify-owners is correct and there isn't any drift? Wdyt?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
For now it will be manual, until we verify its working, we can look into investing in making it automated then, it feels like a nice end of year task for someone
not sure if these are intentional tweaks or the table is just out of date. if intentional, maybe worth making check compare both so they don't drift? |
… run the scripts on bash 3.2 Every repository path in owners.yaml now names its area, and gen_owners.py check fails when the path's approvers or reviewers differ from that row of the table, so the table and the OWNERS files cannot drift. The paths that had drifted are aligned to the table: .github, e2e/auth, infra helmfile, pkg/middleware, operator config/manifests, the claude-plugins root and six per-plugin files. The two infra sub-paths that became identical to the root are removed. labels.sh and open_prs.sh no longer use mapfile or unguarded empty-array expansion, so they run on the bash 3.2 that macOS ships. …agreement from one source The reviewer and approver criteria are written once in owners.md between markers. The generator copies the block into the working agreement, with headings one level deeper, and the check fails when the copy differs from the source, the same way the area table is handled. I was midway through reviewing this PR when I noticed it had been approved and merged. I left a follow-up comment about CI validation and also noticed that make verify-owners doesn’t check the generated OWNERS files distributed by open_prs.sh. It may be worth adding that check too. |
## What changed Replaces the flat list of approvers and reviewers with area owners from the ownership document: https://github.com/openshift-hyperfleet/architecture/blob/main/hyperfleet/docs/owners.md (in review in openshift-hyperfleet/architecture#232 until it merges). - OWNERS_ALIASES holds the names, OWNERS files reference aliases and carry area labels - a merge now needs an approver for every touched path - Blunderbuss requests reviewers from the area's pool ## Why Today every repository lists the same seventeen people as approvers and reviewers, so review requests route at random and any one of them can merge anything alone. Named areas put the request in front of the people who know the code and make an approver accountable for what merges. **The same criteria were applied to everyone at launch, using the last three sprints. Reviewer and approver status follows the criteria in the ownership document and nothing else.** The path to reviewer and approver is written there. Generated from hyperfleet/docs/owners.yaml in the architecture repository. Changes to ownership are a PR to that file, then a regenerated OWNERS here. Tracked in https://redhat.atlassian.net/browse/HYPERFLEET-1762 ## Merge order This is one of the nineteen per-repository OWNERS PRs, step 5 of the repository ownership rollout. It merges after the ownership document and the Prow onboarding PR, and only when the hold is lifted. The team session that announces the model has already happened. 1. openshift-hyperfleet/architecture#232, ownership document and generator. 2. openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-hooks#17, commitlint validates the PR title only, then the `v0.3.0` tag. 3. openshift/release#86872, Prow onboarding and the `tide` context. Independent of 1 and 2. 4. Team session. Done, held with the team the week of 5 October. 5. **This PR.** The nineteen per-repository OWNERS PRs, after 1 and 3, when the hold is lifted: - openshift-hyperfleet/architecture#233 - openshift-hyperfleet/coderabbit#5 - **#331 (this PR)** - openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-api#398 - openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-api-spec#68 - openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-api-spec-template#14 - openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-applier#58 - openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-broker#29 - openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-claude-plugins#100 - openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-credential-provider#15 - openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-e2e#164 - openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-hooks#18 - openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-infra#108 - openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-logger#6 - openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-operator#129 - openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-release#13 - openshift-hyperfleet/renovate-config#5 - openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-sentinel#280 - openshift-hyperfleet/.github#1 6. openshift/release#86873, squash on merge and the commitlint pin bump, after 2. 7. openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-claude-plugins#101, open-PRs digest by area, any time after 5. /hold

Risk scoring, tiers and the Slack message shape are unchanged. - `collect-data.sh` reads `review_requested` events from the issue timeline so the request time is real, with PR `createdAt` as the fallback. - `prioritization-algorithm.md` and `output-format.md` replace "review requests are ignored because reviewers are auto-assigned" with the new rule: requests come from the area's OWNERS pool and are the reviewer of record. - `references/github-repos.md` is the current nineteen repositories (archived and out-of-scope ones removed, `hyperfleet-api-spec-template` added). - `bugs-triage/references/owners.csv` aligned with the ownership areas. - `CONTRIBUTING.md` and `AGENTS.md`: plugin OWNERS files reference aliases from the root `OWNERS_ALIASES` and are generated from the ownership document in the architecture repository. - `hyperfleet-work-triage` bumped to 0.4.0. ## Why Prow now labels PRs by area and requests reviewers from the area's OWNERS pool. The digest is what tells an approver every morning that a PR is waiting on them, so it has to show the area and the reviewer of record rather than ignoring requests. ## How to test ```text bash hyperfleet-work-triage/skills/open-prs/scripts/tests/run-tests.sh ``` 96 tests pass. A live run of `collect-data.sh --repo hyperfleet-adapter` returned real request timestamps from the timeline for adapter#330. Tracked in https://redhat.atlassian.net/browse/HYPERFLEET-1762 ## Merge order This is step 7 of the HyperFleet repository ownership rollout. It can merge any time after the area labels exist (they do), and is most useful once the OWNERS PRs (step 5) have merged. 1. openshift-hyperfleet/architecture#232, ownership document and generator. 2. openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-hooks#17, commitlint validates the PR title only, then the `v0.3.0` tag. 3. openshift/release#86872, Prow onboarding and the `tide` context. Independent of 1 and 2. 4. Team session. Done, held with the team the week of 5 October. 5. The nineteen per-repository OWNERS PRs, after 1 and 3, when the hold is lifted: - openshift-hyperfleet/architecture#233 - openshift-hyperfleet/coderabbit#5 - openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-adapter#331 - openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-api#398 - openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-api-spec#68 - openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-api-spec-template#14 - openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-applier#58 - openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-broker#29 - #100 - openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-credential-provider#15 - openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-e2e#164 - openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-hooks#18 - openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-infra#108 - openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-logger#6 - openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-operator#129 - openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-release#13 - openshift-hyperfleet/renovate-config#5 - openshift-hyperfleet/hyperfleet-sentinel#280 - openshift-hyperfleet/.github#1 6. openshift/release#86873, squash on merge and the commitlint pin bump, after 2. 7. **This PR.** #101, open-PRs digest by area, any time after 5. --------- Co-authored-by: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
What changed
hyperfleet/docs/owners.md: the repository ownership document. Two roles, how a merge works, the area table (approvers and reviewers per area), the reviewer and approver criteria, what a review and an approval mean, and how to change the table.hyperfleet/docs/owners.yaml: the source of truth for everyOWNERSfile in the organisation.hack/owners/gen_owners.py: renders the area table intoowners.mdandOWNERS_ALIASESplusOWNERSfiles per repository.make ownersrenders, make verify-ownerschecks the table is current.hack/owners/labels.sh: creates thearea/*,kind/*andtide/*labels in every repository (owners-labelonly applies labels that exist).hack/owners/open_prs.sh: opens the per-repositoryOWNERSPRs from the rendered files. Why
Every repository lists the same seventeen people as approvers and reviewers, so review requests route at random, any of seventeen can merge anything alone, and review has concentrated on a few people. The model in
owners.mdnames two or three approvers and a wider reviewer pool per area, keeps one approval to merge but from an area approver, and writes down the path to becoming a reviewer and an approver. The same criteria were applied to everyone at launch, using the last three sprints. Reviewer and approver status follows the criteria and nothing else.
Reviewers to loop in
Everyone. Look up your areas in the table and raise anything that looks wrong here. The per-repository
OWNERSPRs follow once this merges.Tracked in https://redhat.atlassian.net/browse/HYPERFLEET-1762
