Summary

File search now finds files in iCloud Drive, and rows call that folder iCloud Drive instead of com~apple~CloudDocs. The README's Scorecard badge also moves to the current score.

Scope: This PR changes one focused thing (bug fix or feature) plus minimal plumbing. Larger refactors need prior agreement in an issue.

Closes: #59

  • Performance improvement
  • Refactor
  • Test addition or update
  • Other (please describe)

Area

  • app

  • ops

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

  • Yes - if yes, please describe the impact and migration path
  • No

What is the new behavior?

iCloud Drive's folder is ~/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~CloudDocs, and file search left out everything in ~/Library.

  • Normal file search: Spotlight already found these files, and Floe dropped them for having /Library/ in the path. Paths inside iCloud Drive in the home folder are kept now. Other Library folders stay hidden, as does a copy of that folder elsewhere on disk.
  • Fast file search: the walk of the home folder skips Library, so iCloud Drive gets a second FileIndexService with its own saved cache and change watcher. It turns on and off with the main one, its hits are ranked together with the main ones, and Settings shows the combined names and bytes. It stays off unless Fast file search is on.
  • Names: row labels and paths say iCloud Drive and iCloud Drive/Notes, through FileResult.folderName and FileResult.displayPath(of:home:). Typed paths and an app's recent documents use the same wording. Copy Path still copies the real path.
  • Settings text: the Fast file search note says macOS will also ask about iCloud Drive.
  • Changelog: the entry links [Feature Request] Search files and folders stored in iCloud Drive as well #59, and Contributors lists @matthrz's request. 0.3.0 opens with a note on how to contribute: AGENTS.md, CODING_STANDARDS.md and the AI-assisted contributions rules.
  • README: the Scorecard badge is now a fixed 8.2, the value api.securityscorecards.dev reports for commit 2e306c3. The live shieldcn badge still reads 7.2, with or without a new query string. A fixed badge needs editing by hand when the score changes, like the Silver and Baseline badges beside it.

To stay within SwiftLint's limits without disabling a rule, ranked and result moved to an extension and FileIndexStatus moved to SettingsStores.swift, with no change to either.

PR Checklist

  • The PR title follows Conventional Commits (e.g. fix(runtime): …); PR Metadata checks this.
  • I've built and run the app locally and verified that it works as expected.
  • I've run the relevant checks from docs/DEVELOPMENT.md (list them below), e.g. bun runtime/smoke.ts extensions/hello planets.
  • If I changed project.yml, I ran xcodegen generate and committed Floe.xcodeproj.
  • I've noted which macOS versions I tested on.
  • I've updated documentation as needed.
  • If this PR changes dependencies / lockfiles (Package.resolved, runtime/bun.lock, Actions pins, etc.), dependency-sca is green, or any .github/osv-scanner.toml suppression includes both reason and ignoreUntil (see Thaw/Floe Security Policy).

Checks run:

  • swift test: 2,564 tests pass.
  • swiftlint lint --strict: passes.
  • ./scripts/sync-strings.sh --check: the catalog is up to date.
  • coderabbit review --agent --uncommitted: one finding, that the iCloud Drive check matched the folder name anywhere in a path. Fixed and tested here; the review was not run again after the fix.
  • macOS 27.2: René checked the search and the iCloud Drive label in the running app.

Not run:

  • swiftformat .: locally (0.64.4) it rewrites 90 unrelated files, so its changes were reverted. This PR's files are not fully formatter-clean.
  • scripts/check-resident-budget.py locally. Before and after memory numbers are still needed; CI's budget check covers the default state, with Fast file search off.
  • Memory with Fast file search on: it grows with the number of files in iCloud Drive and has not been measured.

Known limitations / follow-ups

  • Only the main iCloud Drive folder is covered. App folders in Mobile Documents, such as Pages or Numbers, stay hidden.
  • The "make file search configurable" part of [Feature Request] Search files and folders stored in iCloud Drive as well #59 is not included.
  • Fast file search skips any folder named Library, so one inside iCloud Drive is found by normal search but not by Fast file search.
  • The first macOS prompt for iCloud Drive and opening a file that isn't downloaded have not been confirmed as a separate test.

Other information

AI helped: Claude Code with Claude Opus 5.5 wrote the code, tests, changelog entry and this description, and René reviewed the result in the running app.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • File search now includes iCloud Drive results, displayed under the “iCloud Drive” name.
    • With Fast file search enabled, macOS may ask once for access to iCloud Drive.
  • Improvements
    • Search results and recent files show clearer folder names and paths, including for iCloud Drive.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance for contributors on contribution standards and responsibility for AI-assisted changes.

iCloud Drive's folder is inside ~/Library, which file search leaves out.
Spotlight results from that folder are kept now, and Fast file search gets
a second index for it, switched and searched with the first.

Rows name the folder iCloud Drive rather than com~apple~CloudDocs.

The README's Scorecard badge becomes a fixed 8.2: the live badge from
shieldcn still reads 7.2.

PR summary: File search now finds files in iCloud Drive: the Library path filter keeps the user's iCloud Drive folder, Fast file search gets a second index for it, and rows and paths show the friendly "iCloud Drive" name. The README Scorecard badge and a few code moves accompany the change.

Review summary

This PR extends file search to iCloud Drive: the Library path filter is relaxed only for the user's own ~/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~CloudDocs subtree, a second file index (with its own cache and change watcher) covers that folder for Fast file search, and rows/typed paths label the folder as "iCloud Drive". The security-relevant delta was traced end to end: the widened filter is anchored to <home> and realpath(home) with a slash boundary and no path normalisation reachable from untrusted input (Spotlight returns canonical paths and drops dot components; the index walk builds paths from a fixed root and refuses ../symlinked directories), every other ~/Library path stays excluded, all labels are display-only while every action derives from FileResult.url, and the second index's cache is deleted when Fast file search is switched off, is gated on the same toggle, and its observer wiring cannot deadlock or loop. No security vulnerabilities found in the changed code.

Ruled out (4)
  • Can a file outside iCloud Drive slip past the new Library filter and expose ~/Library contents such as Keychains or Cookies?
The widening admits only paths literally prefixed by `<home>/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~CloudDocs/` (or the real-path of home), and both path sources — Spotlight results and the Rust index walk/cache — cannot carry `..` or symlink components into a hit.
  • Can the new iCloud Drive labels cause an action to run on a different file than the row shows?
`folderName` and `displayPath` are display-only; open, reveal, Quick Look and Copy Path all derive from `FileResult.url`, so the label is an exact alias for the URL acted on.
  • Does the second index leave the iCloud file-name cache on disk after Fast file search is turned off?
`set(on: false)` fans out to the nested service, which clears its running state and removes `iCloudDriveNames.index` plus its stamp, and late saves re-check the running index and bail out.
  • Can the nested index's observer wiring deadlock, recurse unboundedly, or keep indexing while the toggle is off?
Recursion depth is one, the two instances' mutexes are never nested, observer delivery is asynchronous, and `set(on:)` has a single driver whose publisher emits the stored off value at launch.

Walkthrough

File search now indexes iCloud Drive separately from the home folder. Search combines results from both indexes, and iCloud Drive paths receive distinct folder and display names. Privacy text, release notes, and architecture documentation describe the addition. The README Scorecard badge now displays a score of 8.2.

Explanation

The description includes the required sections, explains the new behavior, identifies the linked issue, records testing and limitations, and documents the scope and breaking-change status. It is sufficiently complete despite noting unrun checks and known follow-ups.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#59] requires search in /Users/[username]/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~CloudDocs, or configurable file search. The PR implements the requested path solution. Normal search preserves iCloud Drive results, and Fast file search adds a separate iCloud Drive index with lifecycle, cache, watcher, combined ranking, and Settings counts. Tests cover path handling, index behavior, and missing folders. The configurable alternative is not required because the requested path is implemented.

Recreate the iCloud watcher after RootChanged.

When the iCloud root is created after startup, FileIndexEvents converts kFSEventStreamEventFlagRootChanged to .everything. FileIndexService.apply rebuilds the index, so files already present can be found. It does not recreate the FSEventStream.

FSEvents does not report later subtree changes after a watched directory is created until the stream is reinitialized. New iCloud files can therefore remain absent from Fast file search until the watcher is restarted, such as by toggling the setting or restarting the app. Recreate the watcher when handling .everything caused by RootChanged.

Search the ready alongside index when the main index is not ready.

If the iCloud Drive index finishes first, this guard returns nil before Line 312 reads its hits. FileSearch.search(_:) then falls back to Spotlight, even though the ready index could answer. Gather hits from each ready index independently. Return nil only when neither index is ready.

Require a directory boundary before replacing home with ~.

If home is /Users/me, the path /Users/mean/Documents becomes ~an/Documents. Only abbreviate a path that equals home or starts with home + "/". Based on learnings: “verify the path equals base exactly or starts with base + path separator.”

Keep nested Library folders excluded.

If Spotlight returns iCloud Drive/Notes/Library/cache.db, pathInsideICloudDrive is nonempty, so isInLibrary returns false. Spotlight can then show a file that Fast file search excludes. Exempt the iCloud Drive path only when no descendant folder is named Library. Add that case to the filter tests.
