feat: bring Thaw 2 back to macOS 15 for 2.2.0 - #1398
Thaw 2.2.0: Thaw 2 runs on macOS 15 again, plus the security findings that apply to the app, a button cleanup, and fewer settings where the app can decide. Eleven commits, each with its own changelog line, plus the 2.2.0-beta.1 release commit; meant to be reviewed one by one.
Scope: This PR changes one focused thing (bug fix or feature) plus minimal plumbing. Larger refactors need prior agreement in the issue.
Don't add responsibilities to the big types. We're breaking up MenuBarItemManager, MenuBarItemImageCache, MenuBarManager, HIDEventManager, ControlItem and ProfileManager. Extend a focused module or extract the behavior with its state; the big type only plugs it in. AGENTS.md has the list and why.
Tests: the suite is Swift Testing throughout. Write new tests with @Test / #expect, not XCTest.
External contributors: before opening a PR for a bug fix or new feature, make sure there's a corresponding issue in the issue tracker. PRs that fix or change things that haven't been reported/agreed on may be closed without review.

macOS 15
feat: restore macOS 15 support: deployment target 15, Liquid Glass behind a ThawGlass wrapper with a material fallback, Observations behind observedValues, item ownership from the window owner before macOS 26.
build(deps): AXSwift6 0.5.3, which lowers its minimum to macOS 15.
feat(capture): the capture helper runs before macOS 26 through the C XPC API, with xpc_connection_set_peer_code_signing_requirement on both sides, so hidden items get icons. macOS 26 keeps the Swift XPC path.
Security findings (app code)
fix(uri): settings URI authorization checks the sending process's own signature (audit token), not whichever app has the claimed bundle ID; toggle-thawbar needs settings access.
fix(profiles): imported profiles arrive with hooks off and the relaunch prompt on; the import saves the manifest once, caps entries at 100 and gradients at 64 stops.
perf(appearance): gradient averaging builds the gradient once with at most 64 samples.
fix(logging): line breaks in log records are escaped.
Debloat
refactor(ui): every Settings button takes one of three roles (thawPrimary, thawSecondary, thawInline) built from the existing looks; sheets and permission windows answer Return and Escape.
refactor(settings) x2: one double-click switch for always-hidden (Option-click always on), ⌘-drag always shows every section, context-menu Quit always on, Dock icon follows Hide app menus; automatic updates and spacing are each one choice, the way Thaw 3 did it; search lists every section in menu bar order. Stored values stay readable, removed thaw:// keys and search entries are gone.
Larger than the 500-line guideline (93 files, +2083/-778, of which tests +715) because it's the 2.2.0 release branch; the commits are split so each can be reviewed alone.
PR Checklist
I've built and run the app locally and verified that it works as expected.
I've run swiftformat . and the strict lint for my branch (see AGENTS.md).
I've run the smallest relevant test commands (list 1 or 2 below), e.g. xcodebuild test ….
I've added tests for new behavior (if applicable).
I've noted which macOS versions I tested on (26, 27, or both).
I've documented new public APIs / non-obvious helpers.
I've updated documentation as needed.
This PR targets development (Thaw 3) or legacy/thaw-2 (Thaw 2).
I didn't add new responsibilities to the big types listed above.
New code has at least 80% test coverage and the SonarCloud scan reports no new issues (see AGENTS.md). Fork PRs skip the scan, so it can't confirm this for them.
If this PR changes dependencies / lockfiles (Package.resolved, Actions pins, etc.), dependency-sca is green, or any osv-scanner.toml suppression includes both reason and ignoreUntil (see Thaw/Floe Security Policy).
Test commands run:
xcodebuild test -scheme Thaw -destination 'platform=macOS' (Xcode 27, macOS 27.2): 3422 tests passed, with the deployment target at 15.0.
swiftformat --lint and swiftlint lint --strict (0.65.1) on the changed files: clean apart from rules that already fire elsewhere in the repo.
bash scripts/generate-swiftlint-inputs.sh: list matches, each new file added in the commit that adds it.
CodeRabbit on each change before committing; findings fixed or noted.
Known limitations / follow-ups
Not run on macOS 15 yet. Needs a pass on a 15 volume: the capture helper's xpc_main path, the off-screen press (also watch for a hot corner at the bottom right during a move), Glass fallbacks, and updating from 1.3.0.
Not visually checked: the button and settings changes need eyes on macOS 15 and 26.
The last commit prepares 2.2.0-beta.1: version 2.2.0-beta.1, build 64, and a dated changelog section. The 2.2.0-beta.1 tag comes after merge.
Out of scope: the two CI findings (release signing, triage telemetry).
Other information
Big types touched in place, kept small: MenuBarItemManager+MoveEvents (the off-screen press helpers), MenuBarManager (removed the Dock-icon observer, always adds Quit), ControlItem/HIDEventManager (dropped setting checks). New behavior lives in its own types: LegacyXPCMessage, LegacyXPCConnection, SettingsURISender, ProfileImportPolicy, ThawButtonRoles, AutomaticUpdates, SpacingApplyChoice.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added macOS 15 compatibility.
Added a General setting to control Dock visibility while Settings is open.
Consolidated automatic update and spacing options into simpler choices.
Changed
Updated menu bar search ordering and simplified controls for showing always-hidden items.
Imported profiles are now checked and sanitized before use.
Settings changes through thaw://toggle-thawbar now require authorization.
Bug Fixes
Fixed hidden-item behavior on macOS 15 and restored items to their sections when the menu bar reappears.
Improved signature checks for apps authorized through thaw:// links.
The pull request lowers the deployment target to macOS 15 and adds compatibility paths for older macOS versions. It also changes settings and URI authorization behavior, adds profile-import validation and sanitization, and updates UI glass effects, button styles, logging, and gradient sampling.
Changes: macOS compatibility
Layer / File(s)
Summary
macOS 15 support and observation streams Thaw.xcodeproj/project.pbxproj, Thaw/Utilities/ConcurrencyHelpers.swift, Thaw/MenuBar/Appearance/..., Thaw/UI/...
Build configurations target macOS 15. Observation tasks use observedValues; appearance choices and glass-related UI account for earlier macOS versions.
Legacy XPC transport Shared/Services/LegacyXPCMessage.swift, MenuBarCaptureService/Listener.swift, MenuBarCaptureService/main.swift, Thaw/MenuBar/MenuBarItems/LegacyXPCConnection.swift, Thaw/MenuBar/MenuBarItems/MenuBarCaptureServiceConnection.swift, ThawTests/MenuBar/Items/*LegacyXPC*Tests.swift
The capture service uses a legacy C XPC server before macOS 26. The client encodes and sends requests over a same-team-validated connection. Tests cover payloads, replies, and cancellation.
Menu-bar item enumeration and movement Thaw/MenuBar/MenuBarItems/MenuBarItem+Enumeration.swift, Thaw/MenuBar/MenuBarItems/MenuBarItemManager/MenuBarItemManager+MoveEvents.swift, ThawTests/MenuBar/Items/MoveEventCoordinatesTests.swift
Before macOS 26, item enumeration uses window-owner PIDs. Move events can press off-screen while releasing and positioning the cursor at the destination.
Settings, profiles, and URI authorization
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Profile import validation and sanitation Thaw/Settings/Models/ProfileImportPolicy.swift, Thaw/Settings/Models/ProfileManager.swift, ThawTests/Settings/Models/ProfileImportPolicyTests.swift
Imports reject bundles with more than 100 profiles, disable imported hooks, enable spacing-relaunch confirmation, and cap gradient stops. Manifest saving is deferred during import.
Settings URI sender authorization Thaw/Main/AppDelegate.swift, Thaw/Utilities/SettingsURI*.swift, ThawTests/Settings/URI/SettingsURISenderTests.swift, docs/URI_SCHEMES.md
Settings URI handling identifies senders from signed identity data. Persistent actions require authorization, and several removed settings no longer appear in the URI key list or documentation.
Update and spacing controls consolidate related settings into three choices. Search ordering and inclusion controls, several gesture options, and Dock-icon behavior are removed or consolidated. Option-click, command-drag, and Quit/Restart menu behavior are updated.
New Thaw glass helpers and primary, secondary, and inline button styles are used across app views. Existing glass and button styling is replaced with these helpers.
Logging and gradient sampling Shared/Utilities/DiagnosticLogger.swift, Thaw/UI/Utilities/IceGradient.swift, ThawTests/Shared/DiagnosticLoggerRecordTests.swift, ThawTests/Utilities/IceGradientAverageColorTests.swift
Diagnostic records escape embedded line breaks. Gradient averaging reuses one NSGradient and limits sampling to 64 points.

Merge Risk: Low · up to a974d
The change is mergeable with a few small follow-ups. On the macOS 15 capture path, a rare early XPC error could leave a dead connection until the app restarts the service. The spacing "Apply to All Displays" action can ignore the profile-scope toggle shown next to it. Imported gradients with more than 64 stops can lose their last color. None of these is likely to affect many users.

toggle-thawbar is a persistent action and now enters the authorization path. The handler refuses to perform it when settings access is disabled or sender authorization fails. Update the handleURL documentation and docs/URI_SCHEMES.md to state this requirement.

Add a comment inside the empty event handler closure.
SonarCloud reports a failure on Line 67 for the empty closure. The empty handler is intentional, because discard cancels the connection on Line 69. A short comment states that intent and clears the diagnostic.

Activate the connection only after it is stored in the slot.
The error handler clears the slot only when state.connection != nil (line 120). The store happens after xpc_connection_activate (lines 130-135). An error event delivered in that gap finds nothing to clear, so the handler does nothing. The connection is then stored in a dead state. currentConnection() returns the stored connection on every later call, and send returns nil because the reply carries no payload. Only cancel() (or deinit) clears the slot. An invalidation event is delivered once, so no later event repairs the slot.
The fix must also keep the store and activation in one critical section. If the store happens before activation, the fast path at the top of currentConnection() can return the stored, not-yet-activated connection to a concurrent caller. Activating inside slot.withLock closes that gap. If the handler fires, it waits on the lock and then sees the stored connection. A superseded connection was never activated, so it must go through LegacyXPCMessage.discard, which activates and cancels it.

Preserve the full gradient when limiting imported stops.
If a gradient has 65 stops and its final color is at stop 65, prefix(64) removes that color. The imported profile then renders a different gradient and saves the truncated version. Select stops across the full input range, including the last stop. IceGradient.nsGradient renders from the retained stops. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

.annotation("macOS only reads menu bar spacing when an app with a menu bar item starts. Restarting apps applies the change now; waiting leaves every app running and the new spacing appears the next time each app starts.")
// Without a question to ask, the change needs to know which profiles it is saved to.
Honor the profile-scope toggle for “Wait until the apps restart.”
.waitForRestart maps to .writeOnly and preserves the current confirmation setting. When confirmation remains enabled, requestGlobalApply() stages an alert whose buttons choose the profile target independently of unconfirmedSpacingProfileScope.
When a profile is active and the mode is .writeOnly, use the selected profile scope without staging this alert. Keep the destructive confirmation when no profile is active.

Lower the deployment target from macOS 26 to 15 and gate the macOS 26 APIs: Liquid Glass goes through a ThawGlass wrapper with a material fallback, and Observations falls back to withObservationTracking.
Signed-off-by: René Jiménez <diazdesandi@proton.me>
Before macOS 26 the window server hit-tests a teleport's mouse-down. Stamped at the destination, it lands on whatever sits there, usually Thaw's own control item during a temporary show, so the icon shakes, the hidden item never moves and every move ends in itemResponseTimeout.
Press at (20000, 20000), as Ice does, or further out if a display reaches that far, and put the cursor at the destination instead of the press. Faithful drags and source-anchored presses keep their own points, and macOS 26 is unchanged.
Edson Boldrini found the cause on macOS 15 and measured the fix on the 1.x line in #1187; this ports it to 2.x.

0.5.2 declared macOS 26 although it uses no macOS 26 API, so Thaw could not build for macOS 15. 0.5.3 lowers the package minimum to 15.

…er check
Before macOS 26 XPCSession and XPCListener have no peer requirement, so the helper stayed down and hidden icons, the Thaw Bar and image triggers got no pictures.
There the helper serves connections through xpc_main and the app connects with xpc_connection_create. Both sides require a same-team peer with xpc_connection_set_peer_code_signing_requirement, and messages travel as a binary property list under one key. macOS 26 keeps the Swift XPC path unchanged.
Not run on macOS 15 yet: the tests cover the message codec, the requirement and a full round trip through an in-process listener.

averageColor rebuilt the whole NSGradient for every sample and took one sample per stop, so a gradient with many stops, such as one from an imported profile, cost quadratic work on the main actor. Build the gradient once and take at most 64 samples.
Signed-off-by: René Jiménez <diazdesandi@proton.me>
…relaunch prompt
An imported profile kept its hooks switched on, so applying it ran whatever script its path named, and it could switch off the confirmation that guards the spacing relaunch it asks for. Imported hooks now arrive off and the confirmation on; the user turns them back on here.
Importing also saved the whole manifest once per display or Space association, which grew quadratically with the file. It now saves once, even when a write fails part-way, refuses files with more than 100 profiles, and cuts gradients to 64 stops.
Signed-off-by: René Jiménez <diazdesandi@proton.me>
Authorization looked up whichever app was installed under the sender's bundle ID and checked that app's signature, so another app claiming an approved ID could borrow its grant. The sender is now identified from the Apple event's audit token, and its bundle ID and team come from its own validated code signature.
thaw://toggle-thawbar saves the active display's Thaw Bar setting, but it skipped the Settings URI switch and the sender approval. It now needs both, like set and toggle.
Signed-off-by: René Jiménez <diazdesandi@proton.me>
A message with a line break, such as a hook path from an imported profile, could write text that reads as a separate record from another component. Line breaks in the category and message are now escaped, so every record is one line.
Signed-off-by: René Jiménez <diazdesandi@proton.me>
Settings mixed system default, bordered, bordered prominent and glass buttons side by side, with no rule for sizes or keys. Buttons now use one of three named roles built from the existing looks: thawPrimary for the main action of a sheet, step or notice, thawSecondary (the former settingsGlass) for other pane actions, and thawInline for buttons inside a row.
The update consent sheet and the permission windows answer Return and Escape, destructive actions are marked as such, and the Add Trigger button drops its oversized control. Menus, alerts and views that draw their own controls keep their styles.

…about
General had two double-click switches for the always-hidden section and an Option-click switch, Advanced had a separate switch for Quit in the secondary context menu, and General one for the Dock icon while hiding app menus. Now one switch covers double-clicking the Thaw icon and the empty menu bar, Option-click always opens the section, a Command-drag always shows every section, the secondary context menu always ends with Quit, and the Dock icon follows Hide app menus.
The stored values stay readable so older profiles and defaults load, but nothing reads them, and their thaw:// keys and search entries are removed.
Signed-off-by: René Jiménez <diazdesandi@proton.me>
…Thaw 3 did
Automatic updates was two switches; it's one choice now: off, check only, or check and download. Spacing was a mode picker, a confirmation switch and a profile scope picker; it's one When spacing changes choice plus Save spacing to every profile whenever the change doesn't ask first. Both still store the same values, so the code that reads them is unchanged.
Search had order buttons and a switch per section. It now lists every enabled section in menu bar order, and the switches' thaw:// keys and search entries are removed.

Summary
Thaw 2.2.0: Thaw 2 runs on macOS 15 again, plus the security findings that apply to the app, a button cleanup, and fewer settings where the app can decide. Eleven commits, each with its own changelog line, plus the 2.2.0-beta.1 release commit; meant to be reviewed one by one.
Scope: This PR changes one focused thing (bug fix or feature) plus minimal plumbing. Larger refactors need prior agreement in the issue.

macOS 15
feat: restore macOS 15 support: deployment target 15, Liquid Glass behind aThawGlasswrapper with a material fallback,ObservationsbehindobservedValues, item ownership from the window owner before macOS 26.fix(move): before macOS 26 a teleport's press is posted off every display (20000, 20000), and the cursor goes to the destination. A press at the destination hit-tested onto Thaw's own control item, which shook while the item never moved ([Bug]: can't move Thaw icon #609, [Bug]: Hidden Bar Items Cannot Be Interacted #630, [Bug] The Thaw icon shakes #692, [Bug] Thaw 1.2.0 on macOS 15: hidden item click makes Thaw icon shake; 2.x fix is unavailable to older macOS #748, [Bug]Clicking a menu bar item Thaw Bar causes Thaw's CPU usage to spike to 50%+ #757). Ported from @edsonboldrini's fix(menubar): backport macOS 15 hidden-item click fixes to the 1.x line (#748) #1187, credited as co-author. Works with fix(menubar): put the cursor back after a move posts events off every display #1348's cursor restore.build(deps): AXSwift6 0.5.3, which lowers its minimum to macOS 15.feat(capture): the capture helper runs before macOS 26 through the C XPC API, withxpc_connection_set_peer_code_signing_requirementon both sides, so hidden items get icons. macOS 26 keeps the Swift XPC path.Security findings (app code)
fix(uri): settings URI authorization checks the sending process's own signature (audit token), not whichever app has the claimed bundle ID;toggle-thawbarneeds settings access.fix(profiles): imported profiles arrive with hooks off and the relaunch prompt on; the import saves the manifest once, caps entries at 100 and gradients at 64 stops.perf(appearance): gradient averaging builds the gradient once with at most 64 samples.fix(logging): line breaks in log records are escaped.Debloat
refactor(ui): every Settings button takes one of three roles (thawPrimary, thawSecondary, thawInline) built from the existing looks; sheets and permission windows answer Return and Escape.refactor(settings)x2: one double-click switch for always-hidden (Option-click always on), ⌘-drag always shows every section, context-menu Quit always on, Dock icon follows Hide app menus; automatic updates and spacing are each one choice, the way Thaw 3 did it; search lists every section in menu bar order. Stored values stay readable, removedthaw://keys and search entries are gone.Larger than the 500-line guideline (93 files, +2083/-778, of which tests +715) because it's the 2.2.0 release branch; the commits are split so each can be reviewed alone.
