Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a move refactoring operation for relocating definitions between modules.
    • Automatically updates affected imports and can optionally preserve an alias in the original module.
    • Supports previewing changes before applying them and provides detailed results, including affected files and proposed differences.
    • Detects circular dependencies and refuses unsafe moves without modifying files.
    • Reports parse or verification failures and rolls back changes when necessary.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 4/5

Not safe to merge: importing the public editing package fails before consumers can use its APIs.

Findings

  1. P1 Editing imports are broken ▶

Summary

This change exposes the move facade through the public editing package, but the package cannot initialize because the facade imports a missing module. The missing dependency must be added or the import revised before merging.

P1 Editing imports are broken

codebase_rag.editing.__init__ eagerly imports this module, which then imports move_scope, but no codebase_rag/editing/move_scope.py exists in this revision. Importing the public editing package therefore raises ModuleNotFoundError, preventing existing editing, CLI, and MCP consumers from initializing. This must be fixed before merging.

Artifacts

Evidence from the check

  • Authored and executed Python validator that stubs only unrelated imports and intentionally leaves move-module resolution real, showing the claimed import path.

Command output from the check

  • Executed filesystem check shows both move_scope.py and move_operation.py are missing from codebase_rag/editing.

Command output from the check

  • Executed isolated import reports ModuleNotFoundError for codebase_rag.editing.move_scope, confirming the regression.

Command output from the check

  • Executed direct package import stops earlier at an unrelated Python SyntaxError in types_defs.py, so the isolated import run provides the targeted proof.

Comments Outside Diff

These findings sit on lines the diff does not cover, so they could not be posted inline. Each one leaves this list once its file changes.

  • P1 Editing package imports missing move scope module ▶

    • Bug
      • codebase_rag.editing imports .move from __init__.py:14; evaluating move.py:25 imports .move_scope, which does not exist in the package. The package import therefore fails with ModuleNotFoundError. move_operation.py is likewise absent, so deferred move()/Mover access would also fail if the first missing import were corrected alone.
    • Cause
      • The PR head references move_scope.py and move_operation.py without including those modules in codebase_rag/editing.
    • Fix
      • Add the missing modules to the package, or revise move.py to import the existing implementation/module names and ensure all Mover/move references resolve.

Include the move implementation modules before exporting move. codebase_rag.editing imports move.py, which imports the absent move_scope.py during package initialization. Calls to move() then import the absent move_operation.py. Add both modules in this PR, or defer the public export until they exist.

Closing as superseded: this is part of the split of #1549, which was closed without merging, and it targets the stale feat/change-signature branch rather than main. The change_signature base was rebuilt on main as #1912 (now stacked as #2161–#2169). The branch is kept, so the move-op work can be rebased onto main if it's picked up again.
