Greptile's second review (on 6bcd873) found four more cases where a move applied and passed its contract but changed behavior. All four are fixed on 7dce072, each with a test that runs the program before and after the move; 17 of the 23 new tests in
The branch also merges the latest main (through the updated signature stack); main's named-import checks from #2516 and the move's own import tracking both stay, and all their tests pass. |

#1534) Ports the move operation from the old feat/move-op line (with its review fixes from fix/move-threads) onto the current change_signature stack: cut the definition with the imports it needs, rewrite importers, optional keep_alias re-export, refuse an import cycle, plus the `cgr move` command and the `move` MCP tool. Adapted to main: the definitions read passes longer_project_prefixes, the MCP handler builds its re-ingest like change_signature (released when the move is refused), and a failed measure or rollback re-ingest reports graph_incomplete instead of raising, which the MCP handler records durably. The eval double answers CYPHER_GRAPH_IMPORTS_OF on main's keyed edges.
Found recording the demo: moving the last function out of a module that also binds `TAX_RATE = 0.2` rolled back. The graph has no node for the constant, so the old module read as vacated and the moved function's own `from old import TAX_RATE` was reported as a stale importer. The module import snapshot now carries each import's imported name, and an import of only names that did not move is not stale; a whole-module or unnamed import still is. Also: `move` is no longer re-exported from `codebase_rag.editing`, whose import pulled the parsers into `cgr --version`; and the CLI reference is regenerated for `cgr move`.
The transaction took the disk as each file's baseline, so an edit made after plan() read the tree (or a destination created after it was found absent) was overwritten with content built from the planned bytes. Compare every staged baseline with the planning-time contents, as change_signature does, and refuse instead.
Every import row whose name the moved text mentioned was copied to the destination's top level, including one written inside the moved function, so an optional backend imported on demand became a hard import that failed on load. Only the old module's own top-level imports are copied now; one inside the definition travels with its text. Names bound under a module-level if/try were invisible to _bindings, so a constant set in both branches was left behind and the moved function raised NameError. A name bound on every path is now imported back from the old module like any constant; one some path may leave unbound refuses the move, judged by the moved code's scoped global reads.
Only the moved definition's own name was checked against the destination, so an import pasted for it (a copied import, or the from-old import of a module constant) replaced a name the destination already bound, and its existing readers silently saw the old module's value. Every name the move binds at the destination is now checked against its definitions, assignments, control-flow bindings and imports; an import binding the name to what it is already bound to is not a collision.
With keep_alias and the old module still using the moved name, only a
local import was written, so the old path stopped exporting it: a JS
import is not a re-export. Write the import and an export together.
A definition exported by a separate export { helper } statement lost
its export, since the cut took only the declaration. The destination
now exports the moved name whenever anything imports it from there,
and the unaliased entry leaves the old module's export list unless
keep_alias keeps it; an aliased entry stays and is served by the
import back.
The cut took whole lines, so a statement on the definition's first or
last line (function f() {} console.log('ready'); in JavaScript) was
deleted from the old module and pasted at the destination. When a
non-comment sibling shares either line, cut the definition's own bytes
and leave the rest of the line in place.
A name imported under a module-level if TYPE_CHECKING: (or typing.TYPE_CHECKING) was refused as maybe-unbound, which refused the commonest annotation pattern; before that it was copied unconditionally, loading at runtime a module meant for the type checker only. Such imports now move into the destination's own guard when it has one, or a new one with from typing import TYPE_CHECKING when the destination does not bind it, under the same collision rules as any copied import. Other conditional bindings still refuse.
Taking a sole `export { helper };` out of the old module removed its
whole line, so `export { helper }; registerPlugin();` lost the
`registerPlugin()` call and the module stopped running it on load. When
another statement shares the line, only the export's own bytes go, as
the definition cut already does; both now use the same span helper.
A function-local import stays where it was written, but a relative one counts its dots from the importing file: `from .deps import X` inside a helper moved from pkg/sub/util.py to pkg/core.py started importing pkg.deps. Each relative import in the moved text is now resolved from the old file's package and respelled for the destination, still inside its function; one that climbs above the top-level package refuses the move. Respelling changes the definition's skeleton, so the delta can no longer pair the two sides by shape. The move declares such a pair as reshaped, and only a declared reshaped pair is paired without matching shapes.
The destination imports an old-module name by value, so a function that updates it through `global COUNT` rebound the destination's own copy once moved: it counted there while every reader of pkg.util.COUNT kept the old value. The mirror case, a moved reader of a global the old module keeps rebinding, read a stale copy. Both now refuse, naming the variable; a global only the moved code binds and uses still moves. In JavaScript the imported binding is read-only, so a moved function assigning the old module's `let` (`count += 1`, `count++`) threw a TypeError at the destination. Such an assignment, unless a local of the definition declares the name, refuses the move too.
The graph records `from pkg.util import *` under the name `*`, which no importer rewrite matches, and the stale-importer check cleared it as a named import of something that stayed. Moving the last definition left pkg/api.py re-exporting nothing, `from pkg.api import helper` raised ImportError, and the contract passed. The move now refuses while a wildcard importer (Python `*`, JS `export *` or `import * as ns`) would stop reaching the name: unless the old module imports it back (Python) or keep_alias re-exports it, and not for a name the star never carried (private, or left out of a literal `__all__`). The contract also counts a wildcard importer of a vacated module as stale unless that module imports every moved name back for the star to carry.
…nder the complexity limit
…s; read the whole def header for *args - A name the moved definition reads that only a star import of the old module binds is now refused before writing: the graph records the star under `*`, so nothing carried it and the moved code raised NameError. - `from __future__ import annotations` is no longer added to a destination when the moved text annotates nothing, and a move is refused when the two modules disagree on it and the move would change how an existing annotation evaluates. - The `*args` read-back now cuts the header at its own colon, so a multi-line return annotation no longer leaves an unparseable fragment that reported a variadic callee as receiving too many arguments.
…port of a vacated module - `exec`, `eval` and `compile` inherit the caller's future features, so a definition that runs annotated code through them now counts as annotated: it carries `from __future__ import annotations` and is refused where the destination's own annotations would change. - `from pkg import util` binds the module itself under its last segment, so the contract keeps that importer stale when `pkg.util` is vacated instead of clearing it like an import of a constant the module kept.
Main dropped it as unreferenced (023681c) before move, its only caller, landed; without it `cgr move` and its tests fail to import.
The branch's lock pinned the same versions as main with older resolver markers; both pass `uv lock --check`, so the PR no longer carries it.
Main now starts a member call's site at its name (#3166), so for `pkg.util.helper(...)` through `import pkg.util` the site begins at `helper`, past the module path the move retargets. The span search found no `pkg.util.helper` there, left the call unrewritten, and the move rolled back on the dangling caller. A site at the name is now matched by the path ending at it; one at the call's start still matches as before. Summary
move, the T12 edit operation of the Epic: CGR as an IDE for AI agents + a graph-native edit algebra #1521 edit algebra, ascgr move QN TARGET [--keep-alias] [--dry-run]and as themoveMCP tool. It cuts a module-level function or class, with its decorators, docstring and adjacent comments, into the target module. It carries the imports the moved code needs, including old-module names such as a constant it reads, and rewrites every importer the graph knows. It refuses a move that would create an import cycle. The whole move is one edit transaction, held to the postcondition contract, and undone by its own transaction id when the contract fails.fix/move-threads) onto current main. It is stacked on the change_signature stack (feat(signature): contract expectation, shared call-site helpers and constants for change_signature (#1533, 1/9) #2163 to test(signature): hierarchy, receiver and default guards for change_signature (#1533, 9/9) #2167), which the old code was built on.longer_project_prefixes.change_signaturedoes, and releases the mid-update mark when the move is refused before re-ingesting.graph_incompleteinstead of raising.
