Summary

  • Problem: the standard compatibility move failed cgr check --fail-on-found. That is: move a function to another module and leave from .text import slug in the old one.
  • Fix:
    • _dangling now asks of each gone module-level symbol whether its own module still binds its name after the edit. It uses the same _AfterBindings the importer check uses:
      • an own definition;
      • an alias such as slug = slugify;
      • an import that still resolves, following chains of re-exports into modules the edit left alone.
    • If the name is still bound, every caller that reaches it through that module still works, and none is listed. That covers from py.util import slug, import py.util as u; u.slug(), and a call inside the module.
    • structural_delta shares one module loader between the caller and importer checks. _dangling_importers is unchanged.
    • Still reported as before:
      • a move that leaves nothing behind (deleted, emptied, or importing another name);
      • a plain rename;
      • a removed method, which is reached through its class, so no module binding stands in for it.
    • Docs: a paragraph in structural-delta.md under the field table.
  • Not changed: the issue's first suggestion, which is to trust any post-edit (caller, renamed_to) edge. The re-bound edge is heuristic ([Bug]: Python from pkg import make, Widget (re-exported in pkg/__init__.py) resolves make() / Widget() only heuristic, so cgr rename refuses every function or class a package re-exports #2654) and appears even when the move left nothing behind. So it would hide real ImportErrors, which the negative tests pin.

Demo

cgr check --fail-on-found on the issue's rx repro: main vs this branch

The GIF plays the issue's rx repro against Memgraph: py/app.py imports slug from py.util.

  • The move with a re-export: git mv py/util.py py/text.py and from py.text import slug written into py/util.py. The program prints hello-world.
    • main: page is a dangling caller (renamed_to: py.text.slug), exit 1.
    • This branch: renamed is still reported, dangling_callers: [], exit 0.
  • Negative, after resetting and re-indexing: the same move with an empty py/util.py. Python raises ImportError: cannot import name 'slug'.
    • Both main and this branch report page dangling and py.app as a dangling importer, exit 1.
  • The new tests pass.

Test Plan

  • New tests added for new functionality
  • Integration tests pass (if applicable)
  • Manual testing performed

Red/green TDD in codebase_rag/tests/test_check_reexported_move.py (12 tests). They run through observe with the stateful graph double and through run_check against a git base. Each Python case also runs the program itself to show whether the call works.

Red on main (aae56be): 5 failed, 7 passed. The 5 failures:

  • test_a_caller_reaching_a_move_through_a_re_export_is_not_dangling;
  • test_a_rename_that_keeps_the_old_name_as_an_alias_is_not_dangling;
  • test_a_caller_through_the_module_name_is_not_dangling;
  • test_a_typescript_move_with_a_re_export[re-exported] (export { slug } from "./text");
  • test_cgr_check_passes_a_move_with_a_re_export.

The 7 that pass on main are the negatives, which must keep passing.

Green on this branch: 12 passed. test_check_dangling_importers.py is unchanged and green (52 passed together).

Negatives:

  • The old module deleted, emptied, importing another name, or importing slug from a module that has none: the caller is still dangling with renamed_to, and Python fails.
  • A plain rename is still dangling.
  • A removed method is still dangling although its module defines a same-named function.
  • A TypeScript move with nothing left behind is still dangling.

Mutation checks, 5 caught:

  • no still-bound check;
  • the method guard dropped;
  • the binding check dropped;
  • the module's path not passed;
  • the check limited to re-parsed callers.

…not dangling

Moving a function to another module and leaving `from new_home import
name` in the old one keeps every `from old import name` working, and
`dangling_importers` already knew it (issue #2516). `_dangling` asked only
callers in re-parsed files whether they still bind, so every caller the
edit left alone was reported dangling and `cgr check --fail-on-found`
exited 1 on code that runs.

A gone module-level symbol whose own module still binds its name after
the edit (a re-export, or an alias such as `old = new` after a rename)
now leaves its callers alone, through the same `_AfterBindings` the
importer check uses, which `structural_delta` now builds once for both.
A move with nothing left behind, a plain rename and a removed method are
reported as before.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01EbsCWQcSTGQXv3g5sk418m
`_dangling` builds its own `_AfterBindings` from the shared module
loader, so `_dangling_importers` keeps its signature and the change stays
clear of the importer check.

Walkthrough

Dangling-caller detection now checks whether a removed or renamed module-level name remains usable after an edit. Python runtime bindings and JavaScript or TypeScript exports inform that check. Regression tests cover symbol moves, re-exports, aliases, and related binding cases.

Explanation

The description follows the repository template and provides a clear summary, demo, change type, issue link, detailed test plan, checklist, regression coverage, negative cases, and known full-suite failures.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#3248] requires that an unchanged caller reaching a moved symbol through a re-export is not dangling. The diff to codebase_rag/structural_delta.py adds _gone_for_callers, which _dangling now uses. A gone module-level name stops dangling when its former module still binds it after the edit. The check goes through _AfterBindings.binds(..., for_callers=True), which follows re-export chains into unchanged modules. A method stays dangling, because its module is a definition and a module binding does not stand in for it. The shared _AfterBindings also drives _dangling_importers, so the importer check now uses the same binding rules. The negative cases still dangle: an empty or deleted old module, a plain rename, and a removed method. The PR tests cover these cases and the cgr check --fail-on-found exit code. The PR does not adopt the issue's first suggestion to trust post-edit renamed_to edges. The PR gives a reason: those edges are heuristic and appear when the call fails at runtime. The issue's own expected behavior, which is that a call still resolving through the re-export is not dangling, is met. Verification limit: the structural_delta.py diff output was truncated at 16000 bytes. I confirmed the _dangling and _AfterBindings changes directly. I did not read the full TypeScript _JsExports logic or the test file. The prior PASS and the PR test evidence support those parts.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The production changes serve #3248. Each one supports the still-bound check or prevents false suppression in it. The _gone_for_callers helper and the _dangling signature change implement the fix. _SourceNames.inert and _inert_targets stop a literal-only reassignment from counting as callable. _typing_only and _type_checking_branches stop TYPE_CHECKING-only bindings from counting, as the PR review comment requested. The JS/TS _shares, _exports_locally, and _js_exports logic applies the same rule to TypeScript re-exports and type-only exports. The load_parsers import and the shared loader support the caller and importer checks. The docs paragraph in structural-delta.md and the regression tests in test_check_reexported_move.py describe and test this behavior. The TYPE_CHECKING and type-only rules also change _dangling_importers results. This follows from the shared binds method and matches the PR review request. The PR states that _dangling_importers is otherwise unchanged. I found no unrelated change. Verification limit: the diff output was truncated, so I did not read every TypeScript helper line. The prior review and the PR test evidence cover them.

I checked this against #3248's repro and a set of variants. Callers stay working (and the PR reports nothing) for:

  • a plain re-export;
  • import x as x;
  • from py.text import *;
  • slug = _s;
  • import py.util; py.util.slug();
  • from py import util; util.slug().

With no re-export, or a re-export under another name, they stay dangling (exit 1). All as intended.

One case flips from right to wrong: a re-export that only exists for type checkers. After a move, util.py often keeps the name for its annotations under if TYPE_CHECKING:. At runtime the old import breaks, but the PR now counts the name as still bound:

util.py moved to text.py; the new util.py imports slug from py.text only inside if TYPE_CHECKING; app.py still does from py.util import slug; Python raises ImportError cannot import name slug from py.util. main: check reports dangling_callers py.util.slug and exit 1. PR 3312: dangling_callers empty, dangling_importers empty, exit 0

mkdir rx && cd rx && git init -q && mkdir py && touch py/__init__.py
printf 'def slug(s):\n    return s.lower().replace(" ", "-")\n' > py/util.py
printf 'from py.util import slug\n\n\ndef page(title):\n    return slug(title)\n' > py/app.py
git add -A && git -c user.email=x@x -c user.name=x commit -qm init
cgr -q start --repo-path . --update-graph

git mv py/util.py py/text.py
printf 'from typing import TYPE_CHECKING\n\nif TYPE_CHECKING:\n    from py.text import slug  # for annotations only\n' > py/util.py
python3 -c 'from py.app import page; print(page("Hello World"))' 2>&1 | tail -1
cgr -q check --fail-on-found | jq -c '{dangling_callers: [.dangling_callers[] | {caller, target}]}'
echo "exit=${PIPESTATUS[0]}"
# ImportError: cannot import name 'slug' from 'py.util'
# main @ aae56be1:   {"dangling_callers":[{"caller":"rx__….py.app.page","target":"rx__….py.util.slug"}]}  exit=1
# this PR @ 31815b52: {"dangling_callers":[]}  exit=0

_AfterBindings.binds (structural_delta.py:1023) accepts any import in the module, and an import under if TYPE_CHECKING: (or if typing.TYPE_CHECKING:) never runs. The importer check that already used binds has the same blind spot on main: dangling_importers is [] there too, for an import that raises. This PR extends it to callers, which used to catch it.

Skipping bindings that sit under a TYPE_CHECKING guard in binds / _resolves would fix both. That's the same rule own_class_rebinds_import already applies ("a class under if TYPE_CHECKING: never runs, so it rebinds nothing"). A test with the repro above, expecting page dangling and from py.util import slug a dangling importer, would pin it.

Exclude TYPE_CHECKING definitions from runtime bindings.

CYPHER_DELTA_DEFINITIONS returns guarded definition nodes. _AfterBindings.binds returns True for qn in definitions before runtime guard handling. A guarded definition can therefore make a re-exporting module appear to bind a removed name. The dangling-importer check can then miss an ImportError.

Carry guard metadata into definitions, or filter guarded definitions before this branch. Keep definitions in the else branch as runtime bindings.

`if not TYPE_CHECKING:` runs its body, so an import in its `else` never

`import { slug } from "./text"; export { slug };` and `export { s as
slug }` share `slug` as `export { slug } from "./text"` does, but the
clause has no IMPORTS edge, so the old module was read as binding
nothing and the unchanged caller was reported dangling. The module's
`export { local as name }` clauses are now read from its source and
`local` is followed to its declaration or import. An import no clause
names stays private.

A Python `def` under `if TYPE_CHECKING:` is in the graph but never runs,
so a module re-exporting it raises ImportError; its source now decides
which definitions bind. A TypeScript `export type { slug }`, `export {
type slug }` or `import type { slug }` is erased from the emitted
JavaScript, so it no longer keeps a moved function's callers working.
The export check reads the module's tree rather than the statement's

Unit Tests (macos-latest, py3.12, shard 1/2) failed on 2015f94. I don't think this PR caused it.

  • What failed: one test, codebase_rag/tests/test_go_build_constraints.py::test_a_chain_of_redeclarations_links_each_link_once[every], out of 12033 that passed. It failed assert _cpu_seconds() - started < 5: the Go interface-link walk over 10,000 links took 7.4 s of CPU time on that runner, under coverage.
  • Why it isn't this PR's: this PR only touches structural_delta.py, its tests, one JS constant and the docs, and no Go parser code. The same shard passes on this commit on macOS py3.13, ubuntu py3.12 and py3.13, and windows py3.13. Locally the call takes 0.34 s. The test came from main (8764167), and main's last completed CI run (c09346f) passed it. Main's newer runs are still queued.
  • Fix: none exists yet. A robust bound would raise the budget to about 20 s, or set a ratio against a 1,000-link run. Either still catches a quadratic walk, which takes minutes at 10,000 links. That change belongs in its own PR, not this one.

I'm re-running the failed job once.

…omplexity

Sonar's cognitive-complexity rule (S3776, 15 allowed) flagged the JS/TS
export reader added in 2015f94, and its definition check took `binds`
to 16. Specifier reading moves into `_js_specifiers`; an import always
names its source, so the `export` guard on local clauses was redundant.

The P1 "Broken re-exports pass the check" is addressed in 3f9269c, which only counts a JS/TS definition when its module exports it. a5aceff fixes the CLI startup import that commit introduced. CI is green on a5aceff.

P1 Working built-in exports fail checks

A valid default export such as export default (String); now leaves unchanged callers falsely marked as dangling. _js_default_value_export unwraps the parentheses and records String as a local name, but _exports_locally accepts only graph definitions or imports. The built-in String is neither.

With export { default as slug } from './text' left behind, slug(title) works, but cgr check --fail-on-found fails. Previously, this expression counted as the module's own default value. Recognize valid built-in bindings when resolving the unwrapped name.
